No on the bus camp, but we will visit. We are with some local burners at the Camp Pleasure Garden- 630 on the Esplanade. It will be our first time at BM. Look for the orange Bus. Stop In.......Dave & Lisa
Leaving Milwaukee next week in Sunny our 72 VW Westy-headed for Burning Man-in the Nevada desert about 3 hours north of Reno. Plan on taking I80 going there. Coming back- heading south at Salt Lake City thru Utah and eventually hooking up with I70 Any Must See's near our route?
@lisadaveg I should be hitting the road in about a week as well if the bus is out of the shop by then. Are you at VW Bus Camp? If so we'll see you there. :) Zion Park is nice as are all the parks. I really liked Death Valley but this time of the year in an air cooled might be tough. I also liked Valley of Fire. Great place to camp overnight. Very good facilities.
@b3astieboi2 Depending on where I was but if it was in a hot area then I just rolled along slowly and stopped every hour or so and let the bus cool down a bit.
@theswatter we were cruising across FL in the dead of summer, and that was the way we did, about every 45 min to an hour, pull over, have a drink and chill out. Part of he fun and the adventure. Always meeting great ppl, hearing new stories and seeing new areas!
@ValisFan4 If the body is solid then yes. Engines aren't that hard to come by but a solid body is important. I'm just dropping 4K on rebuilding old Dante here but he's worth every cent. It's a great ride and an even better community of people.
I did 4 months up and down the east coast when i was 19 in a '72 westy. Great vid. Awsome shots, editing and music slelection. Brings back a lot of fond memories
You videotaped my tour in the wrong year and colour bus... I did a tour in a '77 Westy last year. Down the #1 camping in turnouts overlooking the ocean, through the SW states, the Grand Canyon and back... These just bring a smile to your face. I love your video.
@tnhl77 Check out a site like thesamba.com . There is more information that you will ever sort through along with thousands of people to answer anything you can not find by doing a search. Good luck finding the "right" bus and remember that mechanical issues are quick and easy fixes but rust is a killer of these old VW's. Buy a clean, dry bus with no engine over a good running bus with rot.
@dolf199 yeah I love your sight thanks for the tips what engine part gives you the most trouble on these? PS my fav pic is the one were they are pulling out the engine on a bus it is cool to see the whole engine.
@tnhl77 It all comes down to maintenance. I really don't have any troubles. My bus was converted fuel injection to carbs ( takes all of the fuel injection parts / relays etc out of the equation.) You need to keep up with the maintenance or every engine part will give you trouble. I suppose that the next thing my bus will get will be a pentronix ignition for the distributor (no more points, dwell etc...) Keep in mind they are at least 30 years old and you need to expect to do repairs.
@tnhl77 Again, look at thesamba.com and there are threads with pictures on everything- talk with local VW owners. Nothing is too hard- buy “how to keep your volkswagen alive” (John Muir) for an overview- the Bentley manual for detailed repair steps.
OMG this made me cry. I traveled from TX to CA twice in VWs. First time in a 71 Bug, second time in a 73 van. Route 66, Grand Canyon, etc. and of course the beautiful Pacific Coast - some of these pictures could've been mine. THANK YOU for bringing back such wonderful memories.
drove my 74baja from River Falls wisconsin, to santa cruz california, and back just got my license last month two days after i got my license ROAD TRIP!
Hi, You can travel much faster, more comfortable and more miles per litre, with any other Car. But this is the only Vehicle, which gives you that special feeling, right? I wouldn't swap it for any other Car!
Sorry for the 4 month late response. If you check out my website there's a map on there that details my route. Down the west coast, around the southwest, into Mex and then north through the central USA.
Amazing.Ive done it myself. On my '68 Panel/Caravelle camper from Las Vegas to Miami and a '59 Ragtop Beetle from Colorado Springs CO,to Miami.Awesome.
Your videos rock you should have a show on Travel Channel.
