@TsunamiOrtiz Hi! I've used 3dstudio Max for the modeling, I used a gazing ball for shooting HDR images for lighting the 3D renders. The motion tracking is done with SynthEyes. Everything is put together using After Effects.

@Gyro911 Most of those TV sci fi movies don't have hundreds of millions to blow on effects but I guess its good enough for TV, then again things will change, the quality of low budget production effects are only going to improve because of better tools and more people working and learning in this industry. BTW, what you see was done 3 years ago on a laptop on a zero budget :-)

It's rendered in 3Dstudio Max and composited using After Effects. HDRI lighting is also used.

everything looks pretty good, I'd recommend doing all compositing that involves lights in After Effects, just based on what I've seen in 3D programs its seems much harder (maybe a plugin is required) to created realistic lights. Also, you could color correct for the scene (it seems to be a bit bluer than the ship) and had some grain to really sell it. hope this helps.

It's called an artificial look.

It looks fake, because there is no light refelecting from it, everything is darker in the backdrop; and it just looks like someone has stuck a realistic item, with no lighting effect inbetween.

Eitherway, I'll certainly applaud the person for this work; it's a masterpiece, and would work great in a film.

Pretty good. My only suggestions would be to work on lighting the UFO; there was a dark outline around it as if it was reflecting something dark... It looked out-of-place with the background.
