  • Will be doing that today.

  • @SpeedFreakNO So, I did that yesterday. The new starter isn't the same as the old. The part that goes into the engine, well it's there, it wasn't on the old, there the gear just got pushed in when you start, here their is something buildt around the behind of where the gear goes in. But it works. Is this normal that they are different? Also, it has more teeth, so it turns the engine slower, is this bad in any other way than that it might take longer to start at times?

  • @SpeedFreakNO I see now, the one you put in (and take out) has a part that goes inside the engine, the one that was on didn't have that, but the new did.

  • Hey Scotty,

When I go to start my car, it makes a noise if i was trying to start my car while its already started. It makes that noise for a second and then it starts up fine. Is that indication of a bad starter?

  • @TheIronAmuro yes, pray it's just that and not worn teeth on the flywheel.

  • @TheIronAmuro Im having the SAME exact noise your having. I hope to god its not teeth on fly wheel or im screwed

  • @TeNaCiOuSLeGeNd Mine thankfully was only the starter, but it still was fairly expensive because the starter on my truck is covered up by the muffler.

  • Can't be the distributor right or the ignition coil right? my car was cranking slowly (almost grinding/ struggling noise) and it started (even got home lol thank god) then i turned the engine off, tried to start it again and wouldnt crank anymore as in nothing happens. I turned the headlights on and it was a bright as the morning sun ( so im sure its not battery) It's gotta be the starter right?? (fingers crossed).

before this happened the car would normally hav to crank twice before startin

  • @j12torts sure sounds like a bad starter.

  • @scottykilmer i sure hope so scotty, new part arrives on tuesday so let's see. I'll let u know how it goes.

could it also be a starter relay?

what other possible problems could it be. But an engine not cranking sure is a starter right?

  • @j12torts relays rarely go bad, pray it's just the starter and not wiring.

  • @scottykilmer yeh i checked the fuses thyre all good, relay (i dnt really know how to check those so i didnt bother lol) BUT when i checked the starter motor (by hooking up 12v battery on it) it kicked and it worked.

how do u explain tht one? im starting to suspect its the wiring....please i hope its not...its gna be a pain to rewire.

  • @j12torts hey, just run a wire from the battery to the the dash, where you can put on a remote starter switch. Then run the other end back to the starter directly, simplifies things.

  • think it will be as easy as it looks in the video for a 2000 dodge neon? Dont know where the starter is located

  • @LilLik800 just follow the big positive cable from the battery, one end of it ends up bolted on the starter itself.

  • Scotty where is the starter for a 2000 Toyota Camry located at?

  • @syed2006 on the driver's side behind the back of the engine on a 4 banger

  • hey Scotty...brilliant advice on this video. how long did it take you to change the starter motor? i have to get a garage to do it for me and i don't want to be overcharged on labour as mechanics are wont to do with women car owners. regards, Janice

  • @BigMary2010 they go by a book, the actual time is much less. took me ten minutes.

  • @scottykilmer hey scotty why would enginners put the starter under the intake manifold of a northstar enigine v8?

  • @stingray300m because they are evil swine.

  • @scottykilmer : And that's the gospel truth!

  • If you get a lincoln ls get the v8... v6 is boring...I had one

  • afternoon Scotty.. the other day i was at a red light, when all of a sudden my car (87 Acura) started to sputter like crazy and turned off, so i pushed it to the side of the street and noticed a wire leading from my started had moved out of place. so i pushed it back in, and it started. when I'm driving, and make a turn my car starts to sputter, back fire, light go dim. i just keep the RPM high then it goes away.. any thought's?

  • @enriquesford rewire that wiring and pray it's just that causing power loss.

  • Good afternoon Scotty. I was driving my car the other day and I noticed a little hick up while driving and felt the car slowing down. I looked at the speedometer and noticed I couldn't accelerate and that all the lights on the dash lit up like a christmas tree. I pulled over and turned the car off to see what was wrong and after tha,t even with a jump it wouldn't restart. Autozone told me I needed a new battery because the old one had zero power so I bought a new one but it still won't turn on.

  • @JustanotherSilva If it won't even crank, you have serious electrical problems, cause even a bad starter won't make it slow down while driving. Either the alternator is bad, killing the battery, or you have electrical shorts killing power. good luck

  • Hi Scotty, your videos are great, by watching it found out that my starter is faulty, but upon trying to replace it, it seems its impossible to take the bolts off without taking the intake manifold off. Is this normal with some cars or am I just blind ? car is a 1996 Nissan Presea, R11 model.

    thanks

  • @jpar196 some are absolute stinkers to remove, like yours. But I normally can get em off with long extensions for sockets and wiggling sockets and a ratchet.

  • where is the location of the starter in 1997 cadillac deville concourse.. having a long time looking for it..

also not sure if the starter is the problum...

when i start the car. it makes a loud noise.. sounds like if youd would turn the key and hold it..when the car is runing.. it makes a scary noise.. well that how it sound when i go to start it.. can any one help.. did my engine lock?

  • God Bless ya and merry Christmas!

  • 1) love the videos. 2) starter in my 2003 impala died and I replaced it. Tapping the old starter resulted in smoke from the starter. So, replaced it (in the middle of a parking lot in 45 degree weather, no less). Car started fine. Tossed everything in my trunk and tried to start it again. Click-click. Turned car off..scratched head. Started car again and it was fine. Haven't had an issue since (4 or 5 days now). BUT...I'm concerned that replacing the starter fixed a symptom. Ideas?

  • @Talviir na, smoking starters are shot. Clicking is a bad starter, but also not enough power. Check the battery and all the cables to make sure they are all tight and not corroded, of it will click.

  • @scottykilmer Danke...I'll start cable cleaning. Bit of corrosion, tis true!

  • @scottykilmer hey i have a 93 caprice i try to star the car but only start in the 4 try you think is the starter and other question do you know how to fix the defroster in that car

  • @Talviir my car is not starting because the starter is not getting enough power what should i do

  • hey scotty what about on a 91 toyota mr2, wheres it located?

  • @MusicWorthListening2 in the back , between the engine and the firewall, you have to jack it up to get to it.

  • Nobody wants to be turned into a pancake. lol.

  • hey scotty, is this how you change a starter on a 1998 toyota corolla

  • @BigK606 yes,but yours is even easier. Scotty

  • Hey scotty, in order for my car to start i have to either put it on accessory for 10sec then turn the key fully or try and start it one time, stop then give it another try right after. what could be the problem?

  • @armenchik619 weak fuel injectors, try my video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and pray that fixes it. Scotty

  • scotty, my car wouldn't start but only make a click noise. the radio and lights would come on but not the car. after around 10 attempts, i finally got it to work and also 3 more times in a row. what do you think?

  • @oreodplayer either battery is weak or stater. Test the battery first, places like auto zone do that free. Scotty

  • Niceeeee keeeeep up the gooooood work scot

  • this guy is amazingg quick and straight to the point .. keep these videos coming scotty.

  • I've been told by a few car savy friends that my starter has a "dead spot". What is this and is it something I should get fixed ASAP?

  • @tamihusband if it does, replace the starter, that means the motor armature has a worn spot on it. scotty

  • hey scotty i have a 95 crown vic and when i turn the key it doesnt respond at all...the radio, headlights, etc are working but when u turn the key they blank out and the car does not even attempt to start not even a click im wondering could this possibly be the starter?

  • @a7mileboy check the battery and wiring connections first, that often does that. If they are ok, replace the starter then. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thanks scotty i looked through everything and a fuse was blew that powers the alternator and starter solenoid but when i put a new fuse in and turned the key the fuse popped again now im lost...do u have an idea what could cause it to pop fuses maybe a wire touching or anything?

  • @a7mileboy it's shorted out somewhere, get out a test light and start checking for shorts, starting at the fuse and working up to all the devices it runs, Or pay a mechanic with years of experience to do the same. Scotty

  • What do you do when the wire to the solenoid doesn't get power? I can hear the relay clicking on the firewall so i know my clutch switch and crank fuse are ok. I also pulled the starter out and put power to it and it spins so i know its still good.

  • @wolfman5494 the relay could be bad, the ignition switch, or wiring. You'd have to trace it all till you find where power died, as I show in my new video "fixing a dead car with no electrical power" do that same process, only on the starting power wire only. Scotty

  • So do u think the lighting and thunder could do somethin else to it or u think I jus need a new stater

  • @renzo347 I would assume starter, unless you have an alarm system problem.Scotty

  • @scottykilmer hey thanx scotty man i changed the starter and everything is fine now

  • we just had a bad snow storm ct and i was driving my car and stopped it for about five minutes and try to start back and it wont start tried to jump it with cables it does work the battery is good i knocked the starter that didnt work i dont have tester what else can it be or do 2001audi a6 quattro 4.2

  • @renzo347 lots of things can do that, but many times a bad starter will never start, even with whacking it. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer hey scotty the same 2001 audi a6 quattro 4.2 the engine vibrates real hard sometimes when i just start it up from overnight can u probably give me a solution that u think maybe it sometimes vibrate kind of like its your reving the engine... idk the reading at auto zone says all of the cylinders or missfiring i dnt know wat the problem is do u think u could help me

  • My car sometimes doesn't turn over and sometimes it just turns on normally, is it possible that its still the starter?

  • @CorruptGTO yes, electronic parts often work, then stop, then work. Scotty

  • i'm trying to watch all you educational videos. That helps me out a lot. I start class in November for mechanics

  • i got a 1978 ford courier do i change a starter on it or just do it the same way as in the video

  • @jmsirby32 ame as the video. Scotty

  • Hey scotty, I tested the voltage of my battery and it read 12.99 volts. is over voltage bad or is it good?

  • @13FravelJ that's good voltage, but checking a battery is a LOT more than that, the amps count even more, but you need a pro tester to check that. Scotty

  • 2:11 Wait'll we get our Hanes on you!

  • Scotty how will we know if the problem is the starter solenoid and not the starter? Also, Is it possible for the starter to work by extending into the fly wheel but not retract into the starter?

  • @moofushu most cars have the solenoid in the starter and you just replace the whole starter. And yes, starters can stick on the flywheel when they break inside. scotty

  • I have a 2006 Dodge Charger and the wire that connects to the bolt is bad. Do I have to change the whole wire or can I just change the starter? If I change the wire can I use a universal one, I called the Dealership and they said it was 175.00 for the wire. my hubby is in the field and wont be back for 2 weeks I don't wanna have to spend anymore money then I have to. Please help!

  • @angiebigbutt Just splice a new wire end onto it, you don 't need the entire assembly. all hardware or electronic stores sell splice kits. Scotty

  • @angiebigbutt Just splice a new wire end onto it, you don 't need the entire assembly. all hardware or electronic stores sell splice kits. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thank you so much your awesome! I subbed and added you to my check it out channels. God Bless!!!!!!

  • Hey Scotty, I went ahead and replaced the entire stater/solenoid - nothing at all happens when I try to start. I'm thinking two things:

    - clutch isn't getting pressed all the way in?

    - ignition switch is bad?

    - bad wiring?

    Thanks bud!

  • Nice 94 Katana haha.

  • hey scotty i have a 1984 chevy caprice i have put new battery and alternater but im loosing power it will start right up when i jump it but it wont start after i turn it off should i change starter i dont know whats going on with it

  • @beakerboy100 jump starting it has nothing to do witha bad starter, but has to do with loss of power to the starter. Find why it has no power, like bad wiring coming off the battery. Often corrosion near the battery terminals. Scotty

  • Thanks Scotty, you save the day again.

  • Hi Scotty, I have 3.0L V6 2000 Sienna and the starters gone bad. I removed all the electrical connections and the two bolts holding the starter in place. Even after all this the starter still wont budge. Ive tried whacking it with a hammer, moving the car while its in gear (D on an auto tranny) and the starter still wont budge at all. Any suggestions on how to take it off? I feel like ive tried everything. Thanks!

  • @Jigo1 make sure you have all the bolts off, some have 3 bolts. But if not, whack it with a big hammer, they often rust on in rust prone areas of the country, Scotty

  • Kickass vids scotty. learning and saving lots.sort of?

  • Hey Scotty! I have a 02 Kia Sportage (4X4, 5 Speed Manual), And the starter is bad in it, And I need some help.

I can get the 2 bolts out of it, But I can't get the third bolt out, It's over the solenoid and down.

I can't get my wrench in there due to lack of room and wires, Is there any other way to get to this 3rd bolt without cutting my hands up?

  • @gibsonlespaul2 yea, pay a mechanic to cut his hands. You just need a wrench, hand wrench or socket with adaptors wigglers on it to get that bolt off. we mechanics have wrenches of all shapes, curved, semi circles, 45 degrees, and so far to deal with such crap. Scotty

  • Your channel is the most useful car repair source of all Youtube, no joke!

  • I have a 91 Pontiac 6000 and it tends to not start only when it's really hot outside. Could this be a starter issue? It does have its original starter.

  • @TheKrystalRenee If it doesn't crank at all when it's hot, the engine not spinning at all, replace the starter. Scotyt

  • GREAT CHARACTER. GOOD VIDEO

  • Great video, Scotty! Thanks for the videos. Keep'em coming.

  • What part of texas do you live in?

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 downtown houston.Scotty

  • First time i seen a battery in the trunk. Is that modified by the customer or does that model actually come with it in the trunk?

  • @Hidframe some are made that way for space under the hood. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Ooh i see... Thanks for the reply Scotty.

  • Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I have a '01 Mazda Mellinia that needs a new starter & sensors. It's an electric car so I was wondering if it would be hard to on this type of car or is it relatively similar process for any car?

  • @LiberianGirl4MJJ electrical cars are completely different, they do not use starters like a gasoline engine. They are VERY complex and expensive to work on, as the electrical motors serve as the starters in them. Scotty

  • damn, even rod stewart is having it tough! love your songs man! things will get better . . .

  • whats up scotty .. lol .. this realy helped me chang my starter on myy 88 chevy ... thanks

  • Hey Scotty, thanks a lot for sharing this video. I have a Mitsubishi eclipse GT 2002. Can you tell the whereabouts of starter's location? Also, please correct me if my guessing is wrong. My engine stopped and from very high temperature sensor's reading, i guess it overheated. After that I am only able to start the car using push start. so i guess the engine is not blown. when i turn the key, i hear a click sound and also hear a humming sound, which seems like started is trying to do something.

  • @reshunishant It's between the engine and the transmission, just follow the big wire from the positive battery terminal back, it will end at the starter. scotty

  • Hey Scotty, I have a '97 Mitsubishi Magna right hand drive (Australia)

Whereabouts is the starter located? Can I get to it from above or is underneath the best option?

    Patrick

  • @patchy459 I get them from the bottom. They don't sell that model here though, so I don't know where it would be located. Just follow the big power wire from the battery positive, it ends on the starter, somewhere where the engine and tranny bolt together. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

Thanks Scotty, I was able to locate it through many layers of oil that had leaked about a year back.

The problem now is actually getting it out, there seems to be no space to use a spanner or socket wrench to get all the nuts off, looks like I might have to take a few other things out first. Talk about a flaw in design.

    Thanks again.

    Patrick.

  • Hey I have a 97 honda accord, do you know where the starter is located?

  • @bennimarrz it's on the passenger side below the distributor. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thanks alot

  • Hey scotty where is the starter on a nissan maxima 1989??? Maybe its just my battery im getting a new one tomorrow but in case its not can u help?? Because everything turns on exemp the cars motor! Thanks

  • @Richerd25 it's hiding, remove the air filter box assembly and you'll then be able to see it on top of the transmission where it bolts to the engine on the driver's side. Scotty

  • This might be a dumb question but what will I change if it isn't receiving power, the battery?

  • @sikniz213 depends what's wrong. You check the battery, and it it's low on power, replace it. But if the battery has full power, then check the wiring and ignition switch for power loss. Scotty

  • Hey I have a 1978 porsche 928 project that I just bought, the positive battery cable is not connected to the starter, there about three wires that look like they all going to the starter, where on the starter do they go?

  • What if the car just lags when it comes to starting? My terminals are fine, and fuel pump and battery seem ok too.

  • @lamiasubs generally that's a weak battery OR a WEAK starter. The battery should be tested first, places like auto zone do that for free. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer hi scotty fellow mechanic here just want to know what power tester is that what model is it im trying to expand my tools and a power tester is one of the things i need i mean i have a logic probe but its not enough i need a probee that feeds power to the component that im testing just like yours. what model is it how much is for one of those thanks scotty BTW i like ur vids ok cheers SIR.

  • @Z32spdstr that's the power probe III, best one ever. I use it every day. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer thanks scotty

  • You make changing the starter real easy. Thanks!

  • Thanks a lot! This video really helped me out.

  • wow so do all cars have them under neath ??/ i thought older cars had them on top of the engine ??? seems pretty easy so basically the only way to tell if the starter is bad is to test the voltage ???

  • @vinngrizzle Yes, they make em a big pain in the ass to fix these days, that's for sure. Scotty

  • scotty do u mean try to start it or put it in the On position

  • @hp11208 starting it means put the key the whole way to the last position, the start position. The ON position is the second to last position, where it sits after you let go of the key after the starter is done. Scotty

  • hi scotty, i have the followig issue with my ford telstar 1990

last year i had starter replaced on it. they also said battery was a bit f&*%#d and would need replacement at some stage. recently the starter would only turn incredibly slowly, then wouldnt turn at all. assuming it was the battery i changed it out with a more heavy duty one. having now installed this the starter will turn (although incredibly slowly) and may then kick over. i have driven a bit but the problem persists.

  • Don't forget about possible loose or dirty connections, I thought my starter went bad cuz everything else worked in the vehicle but I tightened the battery connection and it started right up

  • little bit harder on my car, have to remove gearbox out of the way

  • Was that an electrical wire nut under there? That definitely wasn't something from the factory. Any splices in electrical connectors should either be crimped or soldered and heat shrink tubed.

  • please post up a video of a 97 318ti im in need of help in replacing the starter :(

  • THANKS Scotty ........ I have succesfully replaced starter in my car after watching your video ..... THank you very much !!!!

  • This girl is gonna replace her starter, of course it would break before christmas.

  • i have a 99 dodge stratus..and went out one mornin and Nothing..i turn the key and on da dash only the "brake' & (prd123) lights turn on,headlights work, heat works..wipers dont..i hear no sound at all upon turning da key..is it my battery or my starter..ty in advance...Btw love the videos...live long bro

  • i love your videos, fast and simple

  • My 1993 civic feels so close to the ground, I mean it is using factory spring and shock settings. I was wondering is there any way to get it higher off the ground without too much notice. And yes I know I might be the only Dude to ever ask this question since everyone else looks to go low, but cut me some slack I live in NYC, with all these potholes it feels like driving in the outback!

  • @jabneh those cars are made low to the ground, period. Now if it's REALLY low , then odds are the springs are worn out an need replacing. without any major mods, that's all you can do. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer What if I just hear a click when I try to start it?

  • I ove this mans videos he made me think how easy some car jobs are! Scotty when you change an alternator how do I determine the correct velt tightness? and one other thing my Fiesta I won here in the UK when I start her up she smokes for 20 to 30 seconds a friend says the valve guides have gone is this worrying? I would love to see a vieo on how to set tappits (valve clearences) ps thanks for your clutch video I have always wanted to see how to do that! many thanks Ian UK

  • @sandydogy Could easily be valve seals or guides, VERY expensive engine work, and oil is cheap, so I'd live with it. Next time I adjust valves I'll show how in a video, but most cars here in the states use hydraulic adjusters that adjust themselves these days. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Thanks Scotty, keep the videos coming I love watching and learning

  • "nobody wants to be turned into a pancake". LOL.

  • kinda reminds me of red green..sorta..lol.

  • @darthfurious80 Ah, keep your stick on the ice man, I don't even have a beard. Scotty

  • I just replace my car starter cuz I know it was bad, but the new one make a horrible sound and then does nothing, just a click. The (+)positive cable is getting the 12.0v. but the small power wire is getting just 0.6v, could this be the problem? The car is a 96' Suzuki Vitara. Thanks...

  • @felio2118 the small power wire should have the same 12 v as the large one. Remove that wire from the starter and test it. If it still has low voltage, fix that wire system. If it goes back to 12v when taken off the starter, you got a bum starter with a bad solenoid. Scotty

  • Two things battery relocation helps with, Safety in drag racing and drifting... and engine bay space...

  • Hey Scotty I just got a question my car starts but when i put the car into reverse or put it into drive................. the car starts choking and immediatly shuts off could that be a fuel cut off switch located somewhere inside the car?

  • Scotty, Today i checked my PCV valve and its clogged really bad and the pipe is no good. Is it being clogged the possible problem for my oil burning problem?

  • What do you suppose is the benefit of putting it in the trunk, rather than under the hood (as tradition would otherwise have it)? Is it just to save space in the engine compartment for other components? The only reason I could see that they are going this route, is because hybrids have batteries in the rear. Short of having a Li-ion battery, I didn't think you could do that. Vapors from my traditional sulfuric acid battery actually once dissolved the cheap lining of an air intake duct I had

  • @youfrancis Yes, it makes space under the hood, that's the only reason. They do have vents to vent the acid vapor away from the car, but many replacement batteries don't have any place to hook the vent hose up to. Scotty

  • Had a guy drop off a truck to me yesterday. He tried to replace his own starter and in the process completely rounded off both 14mm starter bolts. He tried using one of those "Gator Grip" sockets as a last resort only rounding it off further lol. He gave up and brought it to me. I tapped on a 14mm Irwin Bolt-Grip extractor with 3/8 drive and had it off in seconds on the first try. A nice crisp "crack" and it was off like nothing. New bolts and installed his new starter and I was done.

  • ac delco battery in a ford lmao

  • @bone1050 there are only a few battery makers left in the world, most batteries are just labelled with whatever the company pays for, but are made in the same place. Scotty

  • This is cool: I've never seen a standard vehicle with a battery in the trunk. It's a Lincoln? And with a Delco battery no less. :)

  • @youfrancis Yes, it's a Lincoln, but that "delco" battery is made in Korea. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Geewiz. It's amazing that there's any industry left in the country anymore. I've noticed that the Delco filters for my car are getting kind of cheap also (and by that I mean poorly constructed, by comparison). GM must really be pinching pennies to dig themselves out of that hole.

  • @youfrancis

Most AC Delco parts are now made offshore. I've gotten AC Delco relays with "Made in China" right on them.

  • @scottykilmer damn, scotty REALLY knows his stuff. lol

  • I recently replaced my starter on my Camry, and now it will not start nor crank. I can only hear the starter's motor trying to start, but doesn't crank, or any other noise. What may the problem be?

  • I just replaced the new starter yesterday. I dont know why but after that, I couldnt start the car. I could hear the starter spinning. I doubted the battery . I took it to Autozone to be charged. And it was fully charged. But the car still doesnt start. Any suggestion. Thank you

  • @dennisdnguyen Could just be a bad starter, IF the starter is spinning but the motor is not spinning too (see if the fan belts are moving around when you crank it), then the starter is bad with a bad solenoid. BUT, if you mean that the starter and engine are spinning and the fan belts are moving, then you have another different problem. See my video on the scottykilmer channel, the one called Fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start IF that's the case. Scotty

  • go scotty!

  • When my son, who lives in another city, called and told me his car wouldn't turn over, I suspected a bad starter since the battery was almost new and lights were fine. It turned out to be a weak battery ground connection at the engine. Would it be wise to do a voltage drop test for the starter ground before assuming the starter is bad? Or, would that usually show up if you boost using a correct connection to engine mount ground while boosting?

  • @spelunkerd Yes, jump start the engine with the positive cable on the battery positive, BUT the negative cable hooked up to the engine. If the ground was bad, it would then start that way assuming the starter was still good. Scotty

  • Starters/Alternators both are Pain in the Ass.

  • @TeDuaMalakie Ah,but if you had to crank start your car like in the old days, you would kiss the starters. Scotty

  • Great Video Scotty. Last year the starter gave out on my Toyota Solara, so i took it apart and discovered that the brushes were completely worn out. After calling what seemed like a thousand garages i found a shop that was willing to order and ship the brushes to my door. Well i got it all for $25, thats a huge difference when compared to a price of a new starter.
