  • Why is it that Ferrari's 599 designed specifically for the Nurburgring was nowhere near as fast as this, yet this is just an old Porsche?

  • 6:41 seconds in this vid...it should be in the description.

  • @DrNippleHair well there are street legal versions (not made by porsche themselves) of the successor 962 which is not to different from the 956, but that does not really count its still not the same car

  • @DrNippleHair Of course not!

  • It's a real pleasure to listen to Derek Bell's commentary...

  • you guys realize this is not a street legal car haha. No shit its faster than any other production car you can throw at it. A zr1 is fucking fast and for the money nothing compares. But this is just another league of racing, its lightweight body strapped to an engine, no ac, no airbags, no traction control, nothing besides tires, brake, engine, suspension, frame, and engine.

  • @JohnDPearson90 whoops i said engine three times haha

  • I wonder? who was that idiot who even brought up that ZR1.

  • amazing. he tried to narrate this thing but he just simply couldn't keep up "very tricky little bit in here -- oh wait... he just fucking nailed it -- oh dear... it's a record." well done mr. bell.

  • the ZR1 doesnt even go sub 7 please check ur fact b4 u say stuff..........because u will look like a jack wagon. group c was the best competition wise. i want the lmp1 of 2day to have variety like this........and porsche will win overall when its lmp1 comes out

  • To me, it's not even a car.

  • WTF? no comparisance with zr1! that's a car that americans will ever dream!

  • I like the fact that people think that a production car can beat this yet even the Zonda R can't beat this or at least it hasn't yet and it is one of the greatest machines on earth

  • that "guy" is derek bell, one of porsche´s best works driver

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM . . . . ok no problem just derek bell going twice as fast.

    Oo

  • I can feel the speed . . .

  • I wish that guy just shut the fuck up and let us watch and LISTEN to that brilliant engine !!!!

P.S.: the guy who said the ZR1 is faster than this Porsche is a fucking retard.

  • @velkoto1 "That guy" is Derek Bell, who amongst his other achievements in motor racing won 5 times at Le Mans, and was probably the best works driver Porsche ever had - him and Walter Rohrl, look the latter up if you are as ignorant as I suspect you may be. I'd go round the 'ring with either of them, let 'em talk all the way, it would be an honour. Respect to LukeLamping who also know their stuff.

  • Starting @2:36 lol,it's like that

  • People that think a production car is quicker than this obviously have NFI (No Fucking Idea)

  • Jesus the person that said a zr1 could take that made me laugh! What a clown he obviously has no clue :-)

I wish we could see Stephen Bellof's 6:11 in that car!

    Must've been amazing!

  • The trees have grown

  • This car is something incredible.

Impressive from first part of the video...look how this thing can change his direction in the middle-slow turns. Amazing.

Bell raced in this video only for sponsors and Tv. Believe me...he's going fast...but

Ickx was a lot faster (qual lap for him).

That was the "World Sportscar Championship". Scary, spectacular and fascinating.

  • Its also amazing to see how much the trees surrounding the track have grown, I suppose this was nearly 30 years ago. There are so many open areas here whereas now the track is basically a tunnel through the trees

  • Its amazing to think that this car (well its sister car) did 6:11 round this track and that Pagani Zonda R did a 6:47. 30 s slower round the ring than a Group C 956 is pretty damn good. BUT you have to remember that the track has changed, not in the layout (its more or less the same here as it is now) but it was very very bumpy back then which made it harder/impossible to take some of the corners as fast as you can now.

  • This is the best car, EVER!!!!

  • Amazing that the Zonda R has managed a 9:47 and this is 9:41 and not at qualifying speed... Top driving in such a classic car.

  • Porsche 956 1975 (34 years old) was restricted on fuel consumption, so had to elect for the following :-

    3.2 Litre Engine engine (750Bhp)

    Weight 800Kg (1,764 lb)

Zr1 is not competing in a race series and can therefore chose any spec it thinks might win. Specs are

    6.2L V8 Engine (638Bhp)

    Weight 5500Kg - (kin hell)

There will be many seconds different on a lap between these two cars.

  • @gpfwestie 5500 kg, the ZR1?? ROFL, now it is a truck? A Silverado?

What an idiot you are, to put that data as a fact when is totally wrong....

ZR1 is only 1519Kp you fucking monkey, one of the most light weight super cars out there, and one of the most powerful.

Yet it cannot surpass a racing car such as the 956, it is not meant to do that...

Google your date before you post senless shit.

  • @LilProveInn I meant 1500kg it was a typo. That is heavy. My own car weighs 900 kg including a cage

  • @gpfwestie 1519Kg*

  • @gpfwestie hey, you know what, if you set them off at the same moment, by the time the zr1 gets to Anfahrt Schwalbenschwanz turn, the 956 will be starting its next lap. more then a minute ahead of that zr1...

  • This track record will never be broken by any car until they revive the competitions and races that motivates people to push the limits and break records.

  • I wish the guy would shut up!

  • That was awesome! Thanks for posting!

  • absolutely awesome! I wish there was a Record-Lap of Bellof in HD-Quality

  • @XGAMER94 ofcourse this is one of the most difficult tracks on this world.

  • this guy driving and talking derek bell has driven my dads porsche gt3 round good wood =] no joke

  • @danish381 I think his narration was dubbed latter but he was quick.

  • 2:37 "Now just look at that view"...

Er, that's probably a bad idea.

  • You lose it here, and you're in a world of hurt.

  • ZR1 lap is soo slow even compared to other production cars

  • These older things had softer suspension than newer cars, and I'm aware that the Nurburgring is a bit more unforgiving than a lot of tracks terrain wise.

Just a hunch, but could this be why the Zonda R didn't break this record?

  • @hurrhurrbtard

The Zonda is a road race car. This thing is a pure race car. Better aerodynamics (just look at the shape), more power, less weight. No contest.

  • @hurrhurrbtard I do think so. And I think the Asphalt has changed a lot.

  • @hurrhurrbtard No but this car has got more power, more torque, less weight and most of all, a huge amount of downforce!!!! much much more than the Zonda

  • @Kheops63 i dunno, the R beat this time..... so that the porsche did .41, but can do .25 on a good day, and the R is at .47- i guess 8 or 9 of 10 might go to the porsche anyway, but i think they're in the same league. the porsche weighs less? really?

  • @clamlapperable They are not in the same league by miles. The Porsche did 6.11 with Bellof at the wheel in a time when the road surface of the Nurburgring was in a very poor condition and when the technical possibilities where very limited compared to today. Also touring cars like Uwe Alzens Porsche 911 Turbo (the Turbinchen) come very close to the 6.47 set by the Zonda and they actually have to follow rules in terms of weight and power. The Zondas time is impressive but not that much.

  • Meu Deus... fantástico.

Pena que atualmente a filosofia do "safe car drive" impede em parte as montadoras criarem monstros como este para esmigalhar tempos em templos da velocidade, como Nurburgring...

  • ive got this as a model car

  • my god it goes so fast!

  • I just wonder what could a 956 do in the Le Mans series against the P1 cars today? They wouldn't have a chance... :) Am I right?

  • when mankind is gone and aliens or some new form of intelligent life discover the 'ring, they too will wonder how anyone in this dimension did a 6:11 lap.

  • One must have their stuff screwed on really tight to drive a 956 at full tilt. Bellof made the 956 and the infamous 'ring his collective bitches that famous day.

  • BMW has theorized that their modern F1 cars could tackle the ring in under 6 minutes. I personally think such a vehicle would be destroyed in the attempt given the unforgiving surfaces of the Nordschleife circuit. The old Group-C cars are crazy fast (even by today's standards) and much more suited to this track. I think the 6:11 record will stand for a long time to come.

  • @DucknCoverin

BMW knows that, their engines from 200-2005 was the most powerful naturally aspirated in F1. These years of F1 are one of the fastest NA engines ever made.

BAR Honda and BMW had most powerful engines., both producing more than 1000bhp at training. I believe that these bolids are able set time lower than 6 minutes. >>''I personally think such a vehicle would be destroyed in the attempt given the unforgiving surfaces'' << Me too....

  • Only Zonda R get a bit closer to the all-time 956 record of 6:11.

  • Okay, I don't imagine he was talking while driving, but that is still awesomely quick. Too bad about Bellof; from what I've read, apart from being a sportscar legend (with a still unbeaten Nurburgring time), he could, with the right equipment, have been the first German F1 champ.

  • @apeltala If Stefan Bellof could have been the greatest race driver ever.

  • @apeltala Its obviously a 'voice over' . Buggered if I'd have taken time out to chat at those speeds! lol

  • OMG is he speaking while driving? amazing!

  • a shame that Bellof didn't had a onboard cam with him in hís lap of 6.11

    fvery nice vid however

  • now, that is the king of nurburgring nordschleife, the porsche 956...

  • when you see a nordschleife lap video that last 7min, you know it has to be fast :)

  • is this real time, or he fast forwards a little bit?

  • @odinandme real time

  • hujust cant seem to find a prince who knows his way around a womans body

  • funny how the car is going much faster than it looks...

  • i wonder how he cope with the bumps...really-really fast with high downforce car....

  • Simply BRILLIANT

By far the most amazing race track in the world!

  • Derek Bell is such a class act. Love to see/hear him commentate/talk about racing.

  • Yeah. I like the way he always seemed casual about it - much like on this video - "You've just completed a lap of the nurburgring in six minutes and forty one seconds" as if his gran could do that in her fiesta.

    Brilliant bloke.

  • his best lap time was 6:11

  • No, that was Stefan Bellof´s time...

  • Stefan was as far as i know the only one, who managed to get an average speed of over 200km/h on this track.. in the same car.

    With a laptime of 6:11,13

  • this will help my times on FM3!!

  • 6 minutes and 41 seconds. Amazing. I can't do that in Forza 3, than again I am Captain Slow....

  • And in Forza 3 if you crash you don't risk dying or seriously damaging the car or yourself

not to mention it's a good deal more comfortable sitting at home in a sofa, than actually feeling the g forces in the car and the insane braking forces

  • You need more practice...

  • Great video. Thank you for posting. Weird the video is here for almost 4 years. I Found it today :)

  • Best educational video on the tube!! :)

  • The 965 will always remain a legend in the automotive world. respected and slightly feared. Those machines were stunning but lethal.

Huge props to Derek and Co for taming these beasts and showing us the real way to drive the nurburgring

  • I wonder how fast a Toyota TS020 could get round the 'Ring?

  • would probably break the 6 minute mark with a bad ass prototype driver

  • Hmmm... McNish?

  • McNish, Brabham, Rockenfeller

  • @esotoracing You have no idea. Derek Bell is one of the all-time greatest drivers. The 956 has held this record for nearly 28 years, and only now are Zondas etc. getting close. The 6 minute barrier is unlikely to ever be broken because you would need to average 170mph. So, can't wait for that!

In the mean time, please have some more respect for Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Stefan Bellof, Niki Lauda, etc.

  • @CarBoreBoy

170mph is not even possible in dreams. When was Bellof drive 6:11, his average speed is 202,15 km/h, so this is more like 125mph. Average speed of 202 km/h is more scarier than 350 km/h in top speed. Average Formula 1 bolid is able broke down 6 minutes, but need very high average speed of 58 m/s or 209 km/h. Actually you need 210 km/h to do 5:59.

  • from what I read stefan bellof still holds the track record

at 6 min 11 sec which was set with this car model in

    '83

  • Goosebumps almost all the time. A legendary car on a legendary circuit. Thanks for this one!

  • Actually, this car rapes the ZR1 by miles.

  • @BansheeRiderNL but this car is not a ZR1, it is not a real world car, it is a race car. and that depends what you mean by rape, lets crash both cars and see who survives

  • @devil7995 Actually I'd put money on race cars being safer, with their rollcages and whatnot. They're designed to protect the driver in high speed (think 150mph) crashes.

  • @BansheeRiderNL lol dude im amazed people even compare a legendary porsche built le mans car to some road legal "race car".

  • how the fuck can anyone say a production car "rapes this shit" you must be juvenile or illiterate

  • No. He's just American.

  • @freedomsoldier187 or just retarded :)) mentally ill,mind burnt,or u got hit on your head...badly...

  • The Porsche 956 was running 195 MPH three times during the lap, The Vette was at its best, 20 MPH slower. On this lap, this Porsche is 45 seconds faster than the vette, Stephen Belloff in the same car is a minute 15 seconds faster. When the Vette made it on to the big straightaway, the Porsche had already cross the start finish line.

  • @Twin540i

With P-956 you can drink coffee and smoke a cigarette and ZR1 would still somewhere between 14th and 15th kilometer

  • @slungbungdungclung You have taken moron to an WHOLE new fucking level; seriously astronomically stupid. You amaze me. Congratulations. Never comment on youtube again. Ever...Fail.

  • back then, an in-car camera weighed as much as half an adult and was a real disadvantage - a lot in a very light car and also didn't help the handling

  • I love how Derek Bell mentions when Jacky Ickx passes him at the Foxhole, that the camera is to blame for him being slower than Ickx.

  • Funny is, that he got time to make a lil sightseeing (at 6:19) ^^

  • 20 years ago??? lot of babbling from the driver......real lot....grusse

  • Übel Übel, was für eine Zeit hatte dann erst Jacky Ickx...

  • the fastest vehicle ever in nurbugring

  • Wow, that driver made this look so easy.

  • woohoo you da man!!

  • Comment removed

  • 6 minutes is sooooooooo fast

  • of course, its a porsche !

  • Sure...., the car's doing the driving. Dumbass. From someone thats done 150/170 mph on a bike/car respectively and been goin' fast since the 80's, you can take nothing from these guys. They've got gigantic balls and are more of a man than you or I will ever be.

  • Fuckin' Christ... Goin' around that track in under 7 minutes... You really couldn't let your concentration go...

Too bad most racers and teams are just pathetic wanna-bes who let the car do the driving.

Or at least it seems that way, like how they cut up the Le Mans track, 'cause it was too dangerous.

  • Wow, I could hardly recognise half of the ring! Where are all the trees? I think it's a lot prettier now.

  • I would say the track was in better condition then than now

  • it is a shame that Bellofs record lap was not completely filmed onboard just like this lap.He was the best in the Porsche 956 just like Gerhard Berger in the BMW 635CSI

  • What a machine.........What a track......What a combination

  • What a driver! Can you imagine doing that lap after lap?

  • Comment removed

  • i'm english and i think the same thing. aha

  • And Swiss doesn't?

  • It is funny to see the change in foliage from this video to what it looks like now. Some trees are gone in the second half, but most of the first half in this vid is totally different looking in terms of tree cover.

  • your not wrong...mindblowing...whats impressive,is the time that been set by the radical sr8,and theirs more to come they have been said, and then theres also the caparo t1 tp go round..wonder if the can be as quick?

  • what made me laugh, was when jackie icks went past, and to think bellof did some thing like a 6.15...if you have ever heard bell or ickz speak about him, they did'nt doubt that at some point he'd meet his end,..as he was mental..shame..as it makes you realise how large the gulf is between them and us..and i rate myself as a driver...done the ring more than once, and to put it into perspective, you dont have time to look at the country side your concentrating so much..

  • @sidewayssam: Stefan Bellof did 6:11 in fact. Just incredible.

  • a little bit tricky. A LITTLE BIT tricky. HA. LITTLE BIT. For him, yes. I would be dead. Little bit, i can't believe it, that's really strange.

  • Like thatsbollox said. Weight aboard. Film cameras of the early 80's were big and heavy and it must have made the car's center of gravity higher. Derek Bell is a legend.

  • Remember Stefan Bellof did it in 6:11 wich is 30 sek. faster!! :-)

  • Absolute legend of a driver...rest in peace

  • Jesus Christ...Just when I thought it wasnt possible to go any faster, Jackie Ickx goes flying the fuck by! My GOD that was fast.

  • man, you can really see how much grip they get from the ground effects...

  • In those times the drivers were ....pro's....No traction control at all or ABS etc. If you crash in those times at le mans and others, you just died, that were the real mans. Who got the real balls. Respect.

  • The trouble with simulators, is that you get no feedback through the 'seat of your pants!' I can - and have - driven a race kart fast, but a simulator....I'm dangerous! LOL

  • i cant believe this was done by a human! on gt4 its nearly impossible to stay on the track near the straight because the bumps will fling you off and then add the g forces and the fact that youll actually die its unbelievable!

  • Magnificent driving by a legend in one of the greatest race machines in history.

Smooth as a babies bum without pushing too hard. Would have been nice if they kept more engine note for the vid but one of the greatest in car vids i've seen.

Lot of practice laps to get the balls up to hold pace for those blind ones. Phenomenal driving...6-1/2 min lap with weight onboard and not pushing.

  • This is Nuts !

Going these speeds in that deathtrap of a car ,on that course ... You need huge balls of steel. lol

  • balls of Kevlar..lol

  • More like balls of TITANIUM!! I've tracked at 140+ mph, couldn't imagine 240 mph..........

  • Love the commentary.

  • this may sound a bit lame but i use this vid alongside a lap of the ring with my forza on the xbox, its a proper rush with Dereks commentary, but i manage to do a 6.43 with my wheel on it,but in real life i would defo brown them!!!!

  • it only sounds lame because you don't own a proper car to race on the real track. you poor bastard. $300 xbox 360, $50 game, $50 internet connection. Priceless.

    industry pawned you.

  • wtf???im 34 and i drive a strada abarth 130 tc,if i didnt have 2 kids maybe i would consider going there!!!but what is lame is you coming on here on making a comment like that to me,you need to get a life ya lame prik!

  • wow, I have this whole video, on Tape, that I bought 17 years ago, has many tracks all with commentary...good old days racing!! awsome derek bell :-)

  • poitman60

Thank you very much. These ignorants. These Porsches were so unbelievably fast. Bell is a very cool lad. But the best and fastest of all was - Stefan Bellof!

  • Yes but stefan was also a little cocky like Jackie Ickx, and thats why they didnt mix well. It is a shame we lost him, caue he was the next up and coming star.

  • he averaged 126 mph, which is the highest average, he also has the fastest track record..

  • Dear wavefrontbum (dude!) You moron it's Derek Bell who won Le Mans 3 times and he hits 195 MILES PER HOUR on the main straight you poor dickhead. The only stupid one on this page is you. Dude.

And csampan1 Yes Stefan Bellof did do a lap in 6.11 the year before he was killed at Spa over twenty years ago. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Look up Bellof accident at Spa and check it out for yourself.

  • Best car on best track ever! This is pure gold!

  • Stupid Commentator??? Do you have any idea who or what you are talking about???

    Ever heard of Derek Bell???

  • The man talking us through the lap is the man who was driving the car.

Why wouldn't he be doing 170mph? It's a racing car capable of doing ~200mph

  • what is wrong with you? are you really that stupid?

  • i was replying to wave frontmaya.

  • As the others have pointed out that was Derek Bell, the driver of the car. That lap he did was a 6 min lap for 13 miles. He has no reason to lie, and if you check the Ring site it can confirm the speeds for you.

  • Superb tour of the 'Ring. What a gentleman! Wish I had seen this before my last visit.

  • If only the Le Mans Series would take the Nordschleife on instead of the F1 track...

Didn't Stefan Bellof run a 6:11 lap or something absolutely blazing like that, that year? He really took to the 956 like a fish in water.

  • Belofs lap record for the Nordschleife still stands - I think it was 6:11 if I remember rightly.

It's a shame that a guy of his talent wasn't around long; due to the fatal shunt at Spa in 1985.

  • great Nurburgring vid.

helps you understand the course better.

  • Didn't the 956 crack 250mph at Le Mans? Also, how much slower was it than an F1 car? It looks like it isn't far off being as quick....

  • 956 only got upto 230mph at Le Mans, the 962 did 240mph. IIRC only one car has topped 250mph at Le Mans, and that was because they sealed the cooling ducts to be more aerodynamic down the straight.

The 956 holds the record around the Nurburgring with Stefan Bellof in 6:11 and a modern F1 car could theoretically beat the 6 minute mark as shown by BMW and Nick Heidfeld.

  • Oh? There's a vid saying 'Porsche 956 does 400km/h at Le Mans' on Youtube somewhere. It certainly looks blindingly, mentally fast!

So, in theory, this car isn't THAT much slower than an f1 car? What I don't get is how an F1 car can be so much quicker, when it's not as aerodynamic as a closer wheel car?

  • @Nickthebassist01

F1 cars are much slower than Group C/LMP cars in straight lines. A Group C/LMP car can get to 240MPH. A Formula car will struggle to get to 230 MPH (most only do 220MPH).

  • @Atheismrulez f1 car slower in term of the top speed because of the drag, in term of acceleration i dont think any race car could challenge f1 car, only dragsters could..
