I was looking at highlight films this guy punting balls with so much distance and hang time, that one game against the Houston Oilers coach Bum Phillips wanted the ball check for helium.
Ray was the greatest punter ever IMO,but sounds like he wasn't much of an accountant...Just heard dude has to sell all three of his Super Bowl rings, damn!
@eliizme I can kind of understand that happening to some of these old school guys, but guys in today's game have no excuse! The league even set these guys up with financial advisors, lawyers and the whole nine. When you're to make a ton of dough but only for a short amount of time you have realize that once your career on the field ends you have two choices, you can either work for your money or your money can work for you.
@1bIgFaTsOnOfAbItCh I agree with all that you stated, except why does he have to sell those RINGS!Somebody needs to step in(not GIVE him cash, but LOAN him cash) & HELP HIM HELP HIMSELF!Furthermore, why can't you both work & have your money work for you as well?I do it everyday just like my family & alot of Americans have done for YEARS,we work hard & INVEST hard as well.I always have a chuckle when I read about athletes, actors, musicians etc., losing millions & end up BROKE,but this 1 makes me sad
@eliizme Exactly! Through working my ass off and making sound, secure, and smart investments I was able to retire early and simply enjoying the fruits of my money working for me now. But you're right, all the "living for the moment" type people I don't feel bad for. It's simply irresponsible to be a multimillionaire and NOT ending up with a ton of wealth to pass to your next generation. But I agree, this particular case does make sad. I would've just gave him the cash, and let him keep his rings
@clintbronson5 Agreed, Both Lechler and Reggie Roby are certainly in Guy's class, the only difference I'll note is that Guy's Raiders were so great offensively that it neccessitated him aiming a good many of his kicks toward the "coffin corner" or having to resort to straight up punts to get the maximum "hang time." Two terms basically created to describe Guy's kicks and strategies. If Ray were punting more often out of his own end, his average yards per punt would have been much higher...
Ray looks like he could still be playing today!
I trust you'll be in the HoF soon.

@obbor4 what about Reggie Roby? strongest leg that I have ever seen...and he could punt it into orbit...maybe on par with Ray Guy...

Punters don't get enough credit...It really seems like a tough task.
