  • well, i prefer other guitarrist , but he is really great!!!

  • he got lost in 2:13

  • @harugtr

LOST in 2.13 ? listen once again.... Layla !!!

  • Crap

    that was amazing

About the tastiest shredding I've heard in a while

    Thanks for sharing

  • Someone mentionned Slash?????????

  • Craziness at 1:47... Simply astonishing... Sounds like a trumpet and a balloon that's having it's air squeaked out... Never ever heard that out of a guitar before.

  • hey Rhyss655, i have been involved with the guitar for over 3 decades, seen the comings and goings as greats such as evh, yngwie, vai etc , etc, and guthrie is really in lwague of his own. i mean he just does everything inhumanly well, and he literally has NO weak points, including the fact that he is a very modest gentleman of a chap..your guitar teacher is right on, learn everything you can from him..ROCK ON!!

  • 8 that havent ear

  • I told my guitar teacher 2 watch this guy, I said he was amazing, he said this guy was insane!!!!

  • @bitchslapper12 Wait. You mean your guitar teacher had never heard of Guthrie Govan ?

  • Nice short Movie

  • hes kind of like marty friedman that shreds really fast and plays fusion

  • LOL!!!

First time I see him mess up!

  • best sounding and most complex fusion improvisations ever

  • How can one not like this? Wow!

Youtube should disable the dislike button for his videos.

Yetmez ama oha en az 8 adet embesille ayni gezegeni paylasiyoruz. Hmmm

  • 1:45, holy shit. how does he do that?

  • @anders87sa220 I DONT KNOW I WAS JUST THINKIN THAT MYSELF LOL!!.. just when you think every little quirky trick's been done by vai, GUTHRIE!!! LOL!!

  • 0:30-

  • That's why guitar people it's time to learn fusion, jazz blues and all genres of music.. play outside the circle!

  • @dpsd totally agree, fusion is wierd but awesome :D

  • Dude, there´s a great ´´zappa´´ feel in this...so good

  • dude, ok i got an idea... Guthrie, Weckl, Wooten, Chick Corea, and then revive Michael Brecker, all playing on the same stage, playing got a match. would that not be fucking JIZZTACULAR?

  • wait, it's not bark at the moon... well i can't remember the song but it's definately randy rhodes

  • 2:14-2:18 randy rhodes?

  • @zooby11isbambam No, that's Layla by Eric Clapton.

  • @leifert3 no dude it's bark at the moon! listen to the solo.

  • what pedal is he using 1:45

  • 0:58 that reminds me SOOOO much of Gran Turismo 3.

look up Gran Turismo 3 - Slipstream

  • @TheHornet79 ummmmm.... no.

  • @TheHornet79 actually... yeah, kinda. sorry, i thought you meant the whole song. then i saw the "0:58" and... yeah.

  • good man...

  • does anyone know what random ass chord that is at 0:24???

  • @aRazorsEloquence F9#11... X-12-12-13-12-13 (hope u get it... the X is a death note on the first string)

  • This guy is a chimera: Some scientist fused genetic material from Jeff Beck and Alan Holdsworth. The resulting clone studied alternate picking under Steve Morse and jammed with Shawn Lane as a teenager.

  • did he just pull the fuckin string of the neck and raise the pitch by sliding? Damn...just....damn...talk about innovative

  • WOW!!!! And again I say WOW! Nothing up this cat's sleeves but a big 'ol can of smoking guitar whoop-ass! You stand amongst the greats and i look forward to hearing so much more from you. By the way, that backing band has some killer musicians as well.

  • he plays like richie kotzen and greg howe... how the hell does he do that squeal at 1:47?

  • @markbriones3 He plays with a whammy!

  • What a MONSTER Player ... !!!!!!!!

  • Wow, the 8 people who disliked this video suck ass and know nothing of real guitar playing.

  • HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have looked and looked. I can not seem to find ANYONE this good.

  • @ThrashDeth17 There are a couple, not many though. Guthrie isnt even the best imo. certinly top 5 ever but not quite the pinnicle.

  • @Kingding6

    Name one.

Jeff Loomis, Chris Broderick, or Rusty Cooley do not count.

  • @ThrashDeth17 lol. Well I think Greg Howe is in the same league as Guthrie. Then you have the guitar deity. The Omnipotent guitar being that is Shawn Lane. He was the best hands down ever in my opinion

  • @Kingding6 i'm sorry i just don't hear as much musicality in shawn's playing as I do guthrie. sure he's ridiculously fast and clean, but he play's the same damn scale over and over. I want to hear some experimentation, and above all i want to hear the voice of the musician coming out through the instrument. i mean when guthrie plays it litterally sounds like he's talking with his instrument.

  • @Kingding6 i mean shawn got old literally after like the third or fourth video. however, i could literally listen to guthrie govan all day... and i have... more than once.

  • @zooby11isbambam You haven't heard much Shawn Lane then. I learnt about them the same time and I was like "GG is way better", but as I really delved into both, I found he was much more musical, and even more restrained in his playing than Guthrie. Thats just me though.

  • @Kingding6 well then could you at least good me a good video demonstrating this?

  • @zooby11isbambam type in Shawn Lane-Aga Of The Ladies

  • @Kingding6 well i still don't see it but you are entirely inclined to your opinion. I mean don't get me wrong he is a great guitar player but a lot of his phrasing is a little undefined. He doesn't seem quite as conscious of what he's playing as guthrie does. plus i'd like to hear him get away from all the hole tone shit when he does his faster shit. it just seems like he goes into auto mode alot of the time rather than really being present for what he is playing, like guthrie is all the time.

  • @zooby11isbambam tbh I flip back and forth of who U think is better, some days it guthrie and others it shawn for me. At the end of the day, both fantastic guitar players.

  • to much sick for me o_o

  • Slash bwaaa r u kiddin me

  • he seemed to get more stank of out his notes when he used a prs

  • Guthrie, please marry me!! You are absolutely amazing to say the least!!!

  • Guthrie, please marry me. You are absolutely amazing to say the least!!!

  • Is that a PRS or Schecter?

  • @blues03 it is a PRS. Possibly Mccarty model

  • 2:00 i dont know what the hell that is but i like

  • Oh My Fucking Lord.

  • @fingerboy18

    well said mate..!!!!

shit man i need to practise like 40hrs a day to get to guthries level....

and im too old now to catch up..!!!!

    good comment man,like it

  • It's inhuman haha!

  • Wheres Kotzen???

  • The backing to some of this instrumental reminds me of a Satriani song! But can't think of which one?

  • You're right, I didn't notice that one. Well, there's one of those backing track videos where he does pull the string of the neck and it gets a similar sound.

  • @thatguy6221 sliding his guitar pick vetically against the string

  • Actually he's pulling the string right off of the fretboard

  • @MiloGuitarist

seen the gut from radiohead do it as well.

pull the string of the neck for a similar sound..

  • Sickest harmonics ever after 1:32

  • that technique is not to be practiced too often by the faint hearted, especially those who can't afford getting new strings every two days LMAO

  • bending the high e string downwards and slightly outwards till the string gets outside the fretboard, holds it and then make some slides.

I think he demonstrated this technique once and there's a video of that on youtube somewhere, can't remember the title of the video tho.

  • He doesn't look right without a suhr...

  • yea....yet he could play a squier and still sound this good:O

  • hed sound fucking awesome but hed get out of tune when using his tremolo

  • true that...LOL

  • does anyone else notice that there's a vigier shawn lane master signature to the right of guthries headstock about 30 seconds in coincidence or fate? i think he very likely could be the next shawn lane

  • I hope not. that'd mean he's going to die a painful and horribly slow death. that would really suck.

  • that was mean but i mean minus that detail his composing skills and execution technically is some of the best i've ever seen

  • fail to see how that was mean.

    simply pointing that out.

  • just how you worded it but either way guthrie is a legend in his own manner i heard somewhere that he plays so much that he never got his license lol

  • he look's simple but so pro.

  • Never expected the intro to be this dour, it's absolutely powerful on the album and here it's just like... na na na na nahhh.

The solo afterwards on the other hand... I take it all back.

  • is it me or does 2:14-2:18 sound like layla?

  • jajajaj sep yes it does.....

  • it does!

  • omg im going to see guthrie govan masterclass in less than a month! I can't wait to be blown away!

  • id say anyone that says someone else is better than this guy is a fucking picklesmoocher cuz i saw this guy today and met him and every every 2 seconds he played during a song all that came to mind was what the fuck!

  • Guthrie's a jazz/rock fusion player so a lot of what you hear here is a mixture of free jazz played with overdrive. That's why it sounds crazy. Think of Steve Vai in the Jazz world.

  • bucket head sucks just a gimmic guitar player ahh look at me i can where a white mask and press a button all the time

  • AND play the exact same tapping riff every fast "outside" solo!

  • no. fail

  • It gives me the heebie jeebies.

  • My guitar teacher told me 2 watch this guy, he said he was amazing, I gotta say this guy is insane!!!!

  • That's a badass Guitar Teacher right there :)

  • @Rhys655

You Guitar teacher knows his shit :)

  • 1:47 uoa!

  • what the fuck is he doing there? lol Anybody any idea: I have not clue how he did that. :)

  • i only get to the part where it seems he's pulling the string (dont know which) down out the fretboard and some pick noises maybe?

  • Awesome!!! xD

  • would love to see guthrie play live with buckethead.that would be something!!!

  • God, I haven't seen anyone with better overall technique or a larger amount of guitar tricks in their arsenal than Guthrie.

  • is a genius!!!!!!

  • i like how he changes amps on this... lol

  • this guy is SERIOUSLY amazing.... after seeing a lot of his videos you wonder if there's anything this guy can't do with a guitar!

insane harmony, brilliant phrasing, very nice theme.... Awesome track

  • INSANE.

  • hey does anyone know what kind of pics he uses? i would guess dunlop jazz III''s but i dont know

  • he uses jazz iii xl's now, although he was recently caught using a red bear pick given to him by dweezil zappa...

  • it's not the pick that makes him good...

  • Comment removed

  • My favorite fusion guitarist that is alive - followed closely by a few others but I prefer Guthrie's contemporary touches.

  • woot. show those cord fed fatasses what time it is guth

  • What guitar use guthrie??

  • that's a PRS of some sort.

  • That's a PRS on this video but this is like 5 years ago. He's playing Suhr now.

  • Guthrie, you're the other end of a foot otherwise known as a leg!!

  • I LOVE THE LICK AT 1:03!!!

  • Firstly Guthrie Govan is the Greatest... Go the Guth-a-tron... Secondly wtf pmay222 who goes on youtube clips you obviously don't like and writes comment after comment of garbage about how shit he is... ok fair enough if he is not your cup of tea... but jesus get a life and let the rest of the world enjoy guthries music because it is music!!!

  • mmm, erotic cakes

  • amazing

  • is that a prs? ive always thought hes a suhr endorser

  • "This video is not available in your country"

    WHY ???

    I WANT TO SEE

  • This song is so awsome! I need his CD! NOW!

  • Weird, no one said a thing about it for 2 years. Guess they were arguing about who's better at guitar....*yawn* .

  • Just wondering if anyone caught the jazzed up version of Layla at 2.15

  • I can't understand why people think this is shit? If you think this is a shit song, you know NOTHING about music.

  • god you really ARE a dumbass.. try fixing your mis spelt youtube name julias CAESAR.....lol...or is yo name .."went" to sound chaotic..? slash is miles better than guthrie...... and you know it..!

  • I doubt that.

I think Guthrie knows more than the blues and minor pentatonic minor scales.

  • you can often know everything.....but still say sweet fuck all..! i know who most people in the world would rather listen to...i suppose guthrie appeals to the tech heads of guitar....i appreciate guthries skill etc...but it is irritating to listen to

  • I doubt Guthrie gives a fuck who 'most people in the world would rather listen to'.

He hasn't sold out, just to break into the mainstream.

He's doing what he's best at, and that's writing and playing some fucking great songs.

  • effing great songs..???? like what..? and why do people like you still come out with the bollox that is "selling out"...just what is that... is it making music soo appealing that the masses want to buy it.? guthries great songs must be right up there with ..pete dohertys great songs..coz ive never heard any of them..?

  • No one gives a shit what you've heard!

Great sounds like... Waves, Uncle Skunk, Fives?

  • no one gives a shit what EITHER of us have heard...lol..... do you watch harry hills tv burp's..? if you do..there is only one way to solve this..."FIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHHT"..

  • I don't think there's any need to drag Mr.Hill into this.

How about you just send me a link to Slash doing anything half as amazing as Guthrie? :)

  • Wow.

Either you havn't listened to much of his stuff, or you're generally a musical retard.

Guthrie has the most amazing phrasing i've heard next to shawn lane.

The main difference between slash and Guthrie, is Govan's doing something different, not just rehashing the same style over and over again.

  • I didn't say Guns 'n' Roses wern't a good band, I was saying Guthrie Govan is a much better guitarist than Slash.

I know it's bullshit to argue Virtuosos like Vai vs Satch and so on, but Guthrie Vs Slash? It's not even close.

  • O.o Are we listening to the same song?

Guthrie has some of the most beautiful melodys i've ever heard.

Just listen to wonderful slippery thing.

There are a few guitarist who are just 'a barrarge of notes' MAB for example but Guthrie is far from that.

  • well i appreciate guthries technical skill...but i am not set alight by it..in the way i was when i first heard sweet child of mine riff...and we are all sick of hearing it now...but to me..great guitaring..is a riff..wether fast or slow..that reely hits you...makes ya wanna grab your guitar an try play it....guthrie doesnt get me in that way..i must be too old..lol

  • Haha, or maybe because most people couldn't even close to playing Guthrie's licks.

I suppose what you're saying is you like a catchy riff?

But in all of Guthrie's songs have a catchy riffs.

Most noticable: Waves, Ner Ner, Wonderful Slippery Thing Ect.

Give them a listen, if you don't like it, go back to 90's rock.

  • also..for someone like guthrie..who is a stand alone guitarist....i wud say its harder to stand out like someone in a band..who just pops out...bangs out a solo etc....and gets adulation...there are thousands of shredders on you tube tho..i blame modern technology makes it much easier to learn stuff like speed scaling..

  • Guthrie's band is the Erotic Cakes band...

And you just keep going on about 'speed scalers' and 'shredders' it's plain to see that Guthrie is neither of these things.

    Which begs the question:

What the fuck are you talking about?!

  • well i just find guthrie not as good as all the fawners around him i spose...seen blokes as good as him in pubs..lol

  • Wow, i'd love to go to the pubs you do then!

  • There are people out there who can play the things Govan composes, but what I think sets him apart is his accuracy, consistency, and his amazing improvising skills. He genuinly is the greatest, and that is the general consensus of the wider guitaring community.

  • "the greatest" ?

  • genuinely the greatest...my ass....thats like saying someone who writes for the sun newspaper is the greatest writer ever.. is guthrie greater than eric johnson..? or carlos santana..? guthrie appeals to the tech heads of guitaring...and his own signature guitar is the equivalent of jordans autobiography...they both done fuk all..but not in the eyes of their fawners and hangers on....the greatest...god im laughing so much here..lol

  • I suppose you have to be at least half talented to appreciate him ;)

  • I can´t play the guitar and I love to watch him play.

    I´m a musician though...

  • People like pmay222 are the reason mainstream music is trash.

  • agreed

  • I agree too.Ironically it turns out that those who actually talk a lot about others ,are the ones just sitting on their bum doing nothing judging those who are actually doing something.

  • agreed! Most mainstream music is trashy, although you have some musicians that decides to create mainstream music to become famous, but really they create songs that are theoretically really really good! Like Maroon 5! Great band, all are really hooked on jazz and know they're theory, but the kind of things like This Love sells alot better. The chord proggressions in this love is absolutely fabolous!

  • It's not a question of appeal, it's a question of who's better. You even said it in your first post, "Slash is miles better than Guthrie". You've got some pretty backwards ideas.

  • Someone actually said that comment? Who could possibly put Slash on the same shelf as this monster of a player?

  • I quite honestly can't believe that someone seriously thinks that SLASH, one of the most overrated guitarists of all time, is better than Guthrie Govan. You sir, are ignorant beyond the measure of the majority of youtube idiots, and trust me...there are a lot of them. I would be willing to bet you anything, my guitars, my car, even my house, that even Slash himself would admit that Guthrie is a much better guitarist than he is.

  • hahaha you are so right!!!!! :)

  • i sense a hint of greg howe here. guthrie govan's got some of my favorite solo guitar bits. gotta love 'em =)

  • Love the T-Shirt ;)

    Incredible playing, as always.

  • i believe guthrie govan is the greatest guitarist in thw world. he improvises better than anyone ive ever seen. and his licks are crazy. but then again, that is my opinion.

  • Am I the only one who likes this version of the first lounge solo better than the album version? His use of the whammy bar is just perfect.

  • I know what you mean.

I've always favored this version, if only for that bit.

  • What I like about him is that he looks like catweasel.

  • Yup, Guthrie is definitely a risk taker. He never plays the same thing twice and always improvises his solos. He goes all out and that's what makes him so cool. Most shredders stick to formulas and the same repetitive licks.

  • what i like about GG is that he has a sense of humor. He isn't bothered by trying to play w/o making any mistakes (not that he makes many) but you can tell he's more on the comedy side by his names and the quirky things he throws in like that string pull off the neck that sounded almost like one of those whammy pedals.

  • very unique i like it

  • nobody's going to dumbass. post it on a nickelback video...maybe

  • people have their own rights to say what they want to say. just because they think guthrie govan is bad, doesn't mean you can criticize them or disprove them and whatnot. I personally think govan is amazing and he's the best guitarist i know. i envy him. but i also respect what i other people think about him.
