  • coooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love how you can see their personalities in the instrument that they play!

  • DiG ThAT BASS - AnD ThE HaMMoND -- PURE FUNK

  • The Live at the Fillmore, both the Cutis & Aretha sets, are in my Top 10 -- but this version is killer too. (More Jerry for a hungry bassist.) Where is it from?

  • King Curtis was a legend. an accomplished jazz musician. Inspired by the likes of Lester Yuung, Illinois Jacquet and Gene Ammons, he played with jazz greats Lionel Hampton, Wynton Kelly and Cannonball"s brother, Nat Adderly. He was an innovator in the school of rock and roll/funky sax playing and paved the way for cats like Junior Walker and Maceo Parker. In the late 50's, early 60's he made the move to rock and roll and the rest is history with classics like Memphis Soul Stew and Soul Serenade.

  • Doesn't the Bass part sound a little like the music from "Match Game" while they were writing their answers?

And I mean that in a good way.

  • 7 people are deaf.

  • Who does not stop moving the body of a Goooo

  • The two guys mean mugging at 0:47 always cracks me up ;-D

  • This is quite possibly the

coolest, funkiest shit I've ever seen. Period.

  • I met Warren Smith. He played on my drum set!

  • I've loved this version of this song for decades-but I never knew there was a vid. Just awesome.

  • Memphis Soul Stew has but 290k views while Justin Biever has hundreds of millions? What's wrong with the world? (And sorry about that first statement; Bieber doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as King Curtis. Damn it, I did it again...)

  • @PatrickP17 because those of us who love good music aren't plugged into the Internet 24/7

  • Gorgeous stuff...

    Woweee

  • I'm like the dude in the audience at 0:45 right now

  • wicked bassline and tight drums and funky guitar, and god curtis!!

  • 40 Years ago TODAY (Aug 13th, 1971) the great King was slain...RIP KC and don't anybody ever forget the genius that was Curtis Ousley...

  • They should of used this for "Barney Miller"

  • Nice Funky Groove!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good enough to make you SLAP YO' GRANDMA!!

  • Bernard Purdie, real fatback drums fa SHOW!!!

  • @McGarVision Because you're not looking hard enough?? type in "sweet inspirations" (the performers names) and it comes right up. I hate being a search engine for visitors to my channel.

  • Why can't I find "Sweet Inspiration" on YouTube? :(

  • It got good to the guitar player at 1:53.

  • Jerry Jemmott is THE MAN!

  • L O V E

  • the bass player is fucking AWESOME

  • @spadge321 Jerry Jemmott!!!

  • Made Booker T & the MG's sweat? He talks about full of level spoon of Memphis guitar. He is talking about Steve Cropper, and sure it sounds like him.

  • This is absolutely fantastic! I'm off to buy all the King Curtis records I can find after seeing this clip!

  • I think Booker T and the MGs could have made it without anybodys help. The Meters are good, King Curtis is good, and so are Booker T and the MGs. Most importantly, each band was good in its own distinct way.

  • Cornell Dupree...I must remember that name, because I can't forget THAT GROOVE

  • Hoo yeah, that rhythm section!

  • too funky for ya!

  • They are cookin foreal, only if cooking shows had this in the begining

  • @mikotsutorume couldn't agree more!

  • Cool motherfuckers.

  • such a stacked band

  • This song is an official Rock Church selection. For more information, check out our profile. Rock bless you.

  • Since centuries it`s in my Head..... just now i found it.... it`s fantastic !

  • Jemmott, Purdie, Dupree, legendary R&B/Soul musicians...c'mon son! I love the MGs, but they were never this funky.

  • @bearriver666 You don't know what you are talking about. King Curtis was killed by a mentally unbalanced homeless person while King was trying to move an air conditioner into his home. He didn''t blow anything--was a victim of tragic random violence

  • @McGarVision actually he was stabbed by a drug user when he asked him to remove himself from the property.

  • @McGarVision Your right, I hate it when Morons post shit they do't have a CLUE about.. Thanks :)

I only found out the K Curtis is the one who played on the Coasters Hits Yakety Sax Charlie Borwn, what a player!!

  • @McGarVision That's right. It was a tragic random act that shocked many of us. This is fantastic clip. Rest In Peace Mr Cornell Dupree (died at 68 yrs old from ephysema around May 11th.)

  • I just wanna know what todays Rap, got fer dis shyt!!!!????

  • love this right here

  • Tremendous.

  • *Does a little sex wee* I LOVE THIS. This is... Indescribable.

  • Sorry, I have to disagree w/ the description. I'm pretty sure the Meters made Booker T & the MG's sweat, just a little.

  • @thetornado Nah...

  • @thetornado Nah +1

  • @thetornado Maybe a lot!

  • Here is a dear friend of mine Jerry Jemmott on bass who in a magazine interview Jaco Pastorius stated influenced him on the bass. Jerry and Jaco later collaborated in NYC on a bass instruction DVD for Drummer's Collective.

In memory of the passing Wally Gator Watson on Sept. 3, 2010. I had the pleasure of hiring and playing with both Jerry and Wally for a jam gig in 2000. That's the last time we saw each other. RIP Wally. Nov 9th 1951- Sept 3rd 2010.

  • I play an ALTO sax, and it's difficult for me to get that high of a note, WTF! hahaha

  • How have I not heard this before? This is like the most amazing thing ever recorded right here.

  • That's one tight groove man !!

  • Super !

  • At 4.10 they lock in.

    Sweet!!

  • I really don’t think Booker T. and the MG’s sweated these guys. Pound per pound, these guys musicianship is no better than the Booker T. MG’s….

  • tight stuff. ...and now a little pinch of organ...

  • I love ...

  • I think the drummer played with the Spinners.

  • @Ariamaluum The drummer, Bernard Purdie is the most recorded drummer in music history and has also recorded with Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Jeff Beck and James Brown. There are frequent debates that Bernard secretly sat in on a Beatles recording sessions as well.

  • @McGarVision he didn't sit in with the Beatles. The truth is, they used him to dub some drums over early stuff when Pete Best was using the sticks, and then he did some more on a later album. His Wikipedia profile explains all of this really well.

  • @Parrock1 Nope. Read the many interviews Bernard has given on this topic. Wikipedia is too often taken by readers as "accurate"--anyone can post anything there.

  • @McGarVision okay, we'll leave it that it's disputed then! It makes no difference to me, The Beatles are not my cup of tea. Bernard is a legend, end of.

  • This is Totaly AMAZING! Dancing to this can leave you permanently two feet above the ground

  • All musicians should listen to this lesson on how to groove ! Genius !

  • ...hmmm.... needs more cowbell.

  • @Modes9.........re:jaco and jerry jemmott.interestingly enough, jerry just happens to be playing a sunburst j-bass with the pickguard removed.

  • nice!!

  • man i was born in wrong decade!!!! if the black panthers had a band- this would be it !

  • That's anti gravity Funky . Lifts you off the ground . Brilliant !!

  • Here is another talented soulful entertainer who died tragicly and before his time. What is it about the 60's? RIP, King Curtis!

  • KILLER BASS, man. This is true soul.

  • Now THAT is a cooking session. Spontaneous combustion folks.

  • The original was cut in Memphis with the American Studios band. Reggie Young/guitar, Tommy Cogbill/bass, Gene Chrisman/drums, Bobby Emmons/organ, and of course King Curtis.

  • Impossible to sit without moving!

  • These guys are all legends now.... if you don't move when you listen to this, i suggest you go see a doctor

  • @963821

Is that Gerald "Jerry" Jemmott on bass?

  • @2009framat Yes it is!

  • @963821

Yes he is did not understand at first.

He played on Thrill is gone with BB King, too

  • Now that is what I call Stew !!

    Mike and Sean from Liverpool..DooooD

  • anyone know where i can buy this whole concert on DVD

  • I think this is Live at the Montreux Jazz Fest in Switzerland, there's a guy on the web who has this for sale, look on the net under Rockin DVD-they're not cheap though, he ships from Canada, Aretha Franklin is part of this show too....

  • "almost forgot my horn" haha King Curtis!

  • when that guitar comes in! maan hold up!

  • Thank you for posting this: This is priceless down to the Boogaloo bass.

I beleive there are some recordings of Jimi Hendrix with King Curtis.

  • You are making a common mistake when you mention Jimi hendrix. There is an early album of Jimi collaborating with Curtis Knight--Not King Curtis

  • I stand corrected. You seem to know this: Didn't Hendrix record/play with the Isley Brothers ?

Also: There was a band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames that included Randy California - later to form the band "Spirit" No recordings exist I guess?

  • @McGarVision Jimi Hendrix did in fact play with King Curtis, and ended up on a few recordings. It was around the same time as his stint with Curtis Knight. Cornell Dupree talks about touring with Jimi Hendrix in the band in Dupree's "Rhythm & Blues Guitar" book.

  • @colinsthename

    Hey Colin,

Do you know where you can go to get a copy of Cornell Dupree's R&B guitar book?

    Thanks.

  • @beatlesfan129

Heyy, I picked mine up from Amazon. It might not be in too many real stores, but should be sold at most online bookstores.

  • Comment removed

  • @jleoblues King Curtis's name was Curtis Ousley.

  • Hey cnegz if you want us to listen to something "from today" you got to first acknowledge where it came from.

  • cnegz is a moron. Sharon Jones is all theatrics, doesnt know how to reel herself in.
