  • if-else -> work at the corner

    while -> continuous loop

for -> loop with a counter

  • Does anyone know what the girl towards the end said, when he responded with the Super Word Processor thing? I couldn't hear her question.

  • Classic Rookie programmers' questions! they are essential though! they must be asked and then answered to do any programming at all!

  • When will there be HD quality lectures available?

  • @pufixas You are looking for programming abstractions

  • @sloke

I agree with sniper shut up

  • why doesn't highschool teach you this...

  • 46:56 aaaaaahhhh yeeeaaa...

  • 46:56 aaaaaahhhh yeeeaaa...

  • 45:28 oh yeah

  • If you go on CS106A.Stanford.edu (Copy and paste into your web browser) You can follow the class that is running right now and download software to do with the class.

  • I declare this guy the most epic teacher ever xD

  • 16 dislikes? Must be family members affected by 911.

  • @slonke that's about as funny as the amount of STDs your mom has....(it's not funny)

  • @snipesnrifles I didn't know you're HIV positive. Shit, I bet your mom still screws around while you're still jacking off to your mom whore. That's not funny either.

  • @slonke You're humor is about as dry as the Sahara desert during summer.

  • @snipesnrifles That wasn't humor. It is true that your mom is a HIV whore.

  • @slonke A quick look at your channel and all I can say is, lose some weight.

  • @snipesnrifles Why would you be looking at my channel? I know you contacted HIV from some fag, but I am no fag so spread the disease elsewhere.

  • @slonke You know you've completely obliterated your oposition when they have to resort to calling you a "fag" or other derogatory term. I would like to inform you that I do not have HIV and or AIDs nor does anyone in my family, also HIV can be spread through any sexual contact or blood transfer. I went on you channel because you must know your enemy, and clearly knowing thy enemy has brought me victory. And remember, I'm only in highschool.

  • @snipesnrifles Bhaha, you are 22 and you're still in high school? Damn, you are worse than the shit I thought you have. Not only are a HIV careers from your whore HIV mom, but you're about as retarded as a cockroach running around your rented storage compartment. You can't even finish high school can ya? Nothing to be proud of kid, unless you are so stupid, you don't even know what proud means.

  • @slonke No one here likes you nor wants you. Fuck off.

  • @slonke First. In a sentence calling someone stupid you misused commas. Second. Don't worry, because to receive an Sexually Transmitted Disease you must have it SEXUALLY transmitted. I'm sure someone will find cursing out strangers and referring to a disease that kills people in real life-not like in the Call of Duty you spend your life playing- attractive. I'm sure that someone will find an asshole who spends his time trying to be a g in the comments of an engineering lecture video attractive.

  • But then again chances are that no one will ever screw you.

  • @slonke And keep your damn shirt on.

  • @snipesnrifles I don't entertain HIV fags like you.

  • @slonke Well, you are entertaining me on how childish a grown, fat man can be.

  • @snipesnrifles Do a video and see just how ugly you really are. I bet you are so ugly you're the victim of the Chernobyl disaster. I just glad i am not a fag with HIV and having a whorish HIV mom and retarded like you, bhahahaha.

You are so fucking stupid and shit. Just go fuck yourself lil kid! bhahahah

  • @slonke Chernobyl was not a joke, you are as mature as an 8 year old. And the HIV thing ended a while ago.

  • anyone who is 18 or less and you are thinking of learning this stuff along with the lectures from MIT on computer science, I encourage you to do so and keep at it. i am 26, I took at the computer classes in High School Grade 10 finished them thought i knew everything and stopped caring to learn about computers. now I am back 8 years later learning from scratch again.!!!

  • Thanks.

  • like this if your a freshman in college and want to start learning what your actually trying to learn and not history or English or humanity courses smh

  • Computer-science like the page facebook

  • You do something good and he gives you candy :D

  • here is a point for you. Karel is somebody (Object) like you or me. And everyone has some God gifted nature. Karel is a creation of a programmer and programmer has given Karel a nature to move or turn.

Rather you should question how the Karel is created?

    Enjoy Buddy...!

  • I want to know WHY karel "understands" 'move' cause i want to be able to program that, anyone knows the lecture for that?

  • @AddictedYouNoob move was defined when karel was created. Usually the source code isn't given out so we don't know how exactly move was defined but we know the name of the method so we are able to call it. move is just the same type of thing as when turnRight was created except move had to be told what it meant. For example it could be told to check which direction it is facing and go forward one space. But again it was defined when the program was created so we can't tell what they did.

  • I WANT TO BE ON STANFORD :(

  • Thumbs up if you're on highschool and want to learn something else right now

  • i'm 14

  • wow, this made me realize just how much high school sucks :(

  • How come my Karel knew how to turnRight and I did not define the method yet?

Did they Karel's commands to include turnRight?

  • @TheBigIg Never mind I found out that I extended SuperKarel

  • When I used 7-unzip to the files, I get an error: cannot create directory: C:\program files\ eclipse-helios-windows

same thing if I attempt to unzip to program files(x86)

  • in 1 video i learned 100 things ...

  • I started this course form here: hxxp://see.stanford.edu/see/courses.aspx , proceed to 'programming methodology then to > lectures. Under each one they have the Transcript :D , html or pdf format. Hope that helps. maybe he just asked for a chockie lmao. jokes.

  • What did the guy ask at 23:50?

  • @xVerbati here is the link : hxxp://see.stanford.edu/see/lecturelist.aspx?coll=824a47e1-135f-4508-a5aa-866adcae1111

  • Excellent tutorials , clear and precise , however Iam having problems locating the cmd Reference material for Karel. could some please post a link to this documentation.. towards the end where Mr Sahami asks the students to turn to page 18 of some document I can't find for the life of me.

Again Excellent tutorial and funny watching that bag of chockies depleting so quickly. Was waiting for someone to ask to goto the bathroom and get a free chockie hehe.

  • *Conditions that Karel can test test Opposite ---------------------------------------------------- frontIsClear() frontIsBlocked() leftIsClear() leftIsBlocked() rightIsClear() rightIsBlocked() beepersPresent() noBeepersPresent() beepersInBag() noBeepersInBag() facingNorth() notFacingNorth() facingEast() notFacingEast() facingSouth() notFacingSouth() facingWest() notFacingWest()
  • @wipedowt well that didn't go quite as expected :\

  • @wipedowt It's simple, in the description, click the link under where it says: "CS106A at Stanford University" then on the right side of that website there are quick links, click on "Karel Book" and then simply scroll down to page 18." Let me know if Java's getting easier for you with these tutorials, just to see if I should keep doing them.

  • Thanks m8 , just what I needed. Regarding the tutorials , yes very worth While , as the things we learn from this also apply to C++ and php as well as other high-level? languages I feel.

most definitely worth sticking with :)

  • very nice explained - pretty hard material

  • that professor is awesome

  • Wow I love this guy!

  • why can't more teachers be like this guy?

  • I have a question- can u mail me my candy! =)

Thanks for these- they r great!

  • Judging by the questions they are asking all they think about is candy.

  • i went to westwood and the teachers werent so great i didnt get programming, but now i can understand it just by watch the first two lectures.. Awesome

  • Man...this guy is teaching about a for loop before even telling anyone what a variable is...not to mention an increment operator. What the hell is he thinking. He talks well, but is not a good teacher.

  • @Ms19802007

    I thought exactly the same.

  • STIFF NIPPS

  • this is my second video today :)

VERY interesting stuff... Just would be better for if it was C++...

  • @pufixas watch?v=kMzH3tfP6f8&feature=player_embedded#! <-- this is Stanford's CS106B course and is centered around on C++

  • @supersayin201

    thank you!

  • I'm so glad I came across these videos. I'm going to take programming next semester and I don't know anything. He is a good professor and makes thing clear. I wish the video was more zoomed in or in HD or something though... can't see the commands well lol. But I still appreciate them.

  • Karel won't load in eclipse. I got both downloads from the stanford site and IDE but when I go to run it suspends and rund debugging then says source not found.

  • @gringo12893 Great! I can't even get eclipse to unzip

  • Bloody amazing, very good teacher with a sense of humor!

  • is the brace keys { } or [ ]

  • Thanks youtube. I can go to Stanford virtually even if I can't afford the tuition. I'm a value, and you're pointing at the address of Stanford... I'm there :)

  • omg this makes everything sooo much clearer

  • how do you get karol on the thing??

  • He's so good, I have an instinct to raise my hand and ask a question :p.

  • The last question didn't get a bounty at 48:00 :(

  • @Excelsoft what are you talking about?

  • @xVerbati thanks for link

  • is he persian? :D awesome guy :D but still this lecture seems to be kind of easy and simple :P thought stanfort is ultra hard

  • @SquareTales yeah he is persian, and stanford iz ez

  • @SquareTales yea you try 4 classes crammed with a lot of work and studying then say its easy, youre just watching a guy talking, youre not doing the work, assignments, tests etc

  • @ttabbachino just saying .... he is telling us the very basics :D but it might get way harder

  • wat isthe poit of comuters? they're don,t do anything! their just stupid thing

  • @XxhedshotxX1,

I don't use Eclipse so I'm not sure what the differences are between the different versions, but I would go with the top link "Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers" because that one looks to be the most popular one since it has the most downloads.

  • karel is supposed to be a guy? I allways think of karel as a female

  • Heh, he built the code around that silly pseudocode. Cool.

  • what is OBOB?

  • what compiler is being used? is it microsoft visual c++? thanks

  • @mysite1000,

He said before in the first lecture that they are using Eclipse, which is nice because it is totally free.

    eclipse(DOT)org/downloads/

  • @Tekkerue Or even better, go to the website he supplied and download it from there. ^^

  • @Tekkerue tnx mate.. i noticed afterwards...

  • go to 4:10 to get past all the administrative announcements, and into the content

  • @XChaosXSniperX I don't think average people get into Stanford, money or not

  • Free education! :D.

  • @XChaosXSniperX Sucks it's so damn expensive :P

  • I wish my teacher was like this guy

  • How do you open Karel? I was unable to open the Jar file using eclipse or the Java on my computer.

  • 13 people have tiny brains and short attention spans

  • @timb37 u must have a deep fear of the tiny brain short attention span part of urself.

  • @T3RRABYT3 Easy tiger, just kidding. And of course I do, don't we all to some extent?

  • @timb37 No I don't, you rat!

  • @T3RRABYT3 :D

  • can't get eclipse to run. any suggestions?

  • @lydian49 Nevermind i got it

  • @lydian49 How? I'm running it on a mac 10.6 Every time I try to open eclipse it creates a log and closes! Murder! Help?

  • @Iaind78 not sure on the mac. i am running it on the xp os. I deleted all of my installed java and got the most updated version of java from the java.com website and that worked. i would make sure your you have the most current version of java installed on your mac. hope this helps.

  • @lydian49 Run as admin

  • Go to the website link, click software and you'll have the eclipse he uses.

  • Is there anyway to access the Course Reader Online? I checked the handout page on their website, but no luck finding it.

  • @deroest6 The course reader is online. You can find it with a google search for "karel the robot learns java." It's the first result, a pdf.

  • ME GUSTA

  • This guy could be a brilliant stand-up comedian

  • This guy is awesome.

  • can someone help me

how to run karol ????? and wat essasntal u use testers eclipse?

  • @TheNewScapersTime I HAVE THE SAME QUESTION. i downloaded eclipse but have not yet found out how to open the karol screen.

  • @FunkyDandy420 It's all in the handouts. Follow the handout link on the website. Also you need the version of eclipse from stanford not the regular one...

  • @FunkyDandy420 Have you found a way to open it yet? If so, how?

  • @Doobadoobas i got too frustrated with eclipse and just gave up. if i figure it out ill let you know though..

  • is he throwing chocolates?

  • is there any high quality version...... i cant see the commands and all the stuff they type .... pls anybody

  • Will there be any updates to that or similar class? Since I see that it was added at 2008. Maybe there are some new.

  • damn this is so much better than any class ive ever taken

  • Wish I had this video when I was learning in programming in my college class.

  • lol i wanna go to that class just to ask alot of questions!! yeh im a greedy mother fucker

  • This guy is much better than the MIT dude. The students at Stanford seem cooler, too.

  • Comment removed

  • I was about to say "Wow... same outdated technology and mind-numbing lectures that I had to learn from at college"... but then he threw CANDY!! ................. CANDY!!!!!! FOR A QUESTION THAT EVEN A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SHOULD'VE KNOWN THE ANSWER TO!!! HOLY CARP!!!! Shoulda gone to Stanford. :(

  • Did anyone else spot the mistake in the FOR loop? He said you could set the counter to 6 and it would still be the same as turn right, but that would actually be turn around. You need to loop 7 times for turn right.

  • @Vaughnlesterinoz No that is not correct, because his first right is different from his second right (at first he is facing north & his right side is east, but after he turns left three times he is facing east & his right side would be south), therefore it must remain 6

  • @sauzy except that he didn't mention it in the context of turning right twice (turn around) but said that saying turn left 6 times would yield the same result as a single turn right. (i.e. 90 degree rotation to the right does not face the same direction as 90x6 to the left)

  • @sauzy

I think i'll have to agree with Vaughnlesterinoz on this one. if you turn 6 times it does not yield the same results as 3. you have to add one more. the reason for this is Karel isn't starting from the same spot when you attempt the next 3 turns after the first 3. I tried this out physically with an action figure and he ends up hanging upside down facing west, NOT east like he should be.

  • how to do you import assignments into eclipse on a mac? i downloaded the assignments and clicked "import" and then clicked on assignment1, but none of its contents get loaded into eclipse...any help would be appreciated!

  • this guys a great teacher. Wish I would had this video when i first started learning programming.

  • Comment removed

  • I want Stanford... the problem is that they don't want me lol!

    The class is still amazing!

Stanford girls are sweet... (not include CS on Eng.)

    :-)

  • can anyone tell me where can i download his files so i dont have to retype every time these source codes

  • can anyone tell me where can i download his files so i dont have to retype every time these source codes

  • What is the name of the application where you program and is there a mac version??

  • @bwmac101 ecillpse IDE or you can also use netbeans IDE

  • @bwmac101 eclipse. if you search "eclipse stanford" you should get to the stanford download link, a special version just for this course. a lot more important stuff is in the first lecture, check it out.

and yes, there is a mac version.

  • name of program eclipse

yes, there is a mac version

go to lecture 1. they will explain where to get the programs on the Stanford website (reliable)

  • Karel can test the following conditions: Positive Negetive frontIsClear() frontIsBlocked() leftIsClear() leftIsBlocked() rightIsClear() rightIsBlocked() beepersPresent() noBeepersPresent() beepersInBag() noBeepersInBag() facingNorth() notFacingNorth() facingEast() notFacingEast() facingSouth() notFacingSouth() facingWest() notFacingWest()
  • Where can I find the course reader with all the conditions. I've looked through most of the assignments and handouts and I don't see them. :(

  • Mehran Sahami is a grrrt tcher

  • Anyone know where i can get Karel?

  • gonna watch all 28 of these videos.... love them

  • Resolution: Lecture one is max 480p but this lecture video is 360p.

    OH WHYYYYYEEE???

  • I guess he earns more then 300$ per hour. If not - this is shame of stanford

  • 47:52 Thumbs up if you ducked when he threw the candy towards the camera!

  • LOL they made "stanford eclipse" for both mac and windows, no (open source) UNIX or Linux versions of it :D it's a little bad morale to benefit from open source and not support it :D bad baad stanford.. good tutorial though

  • Is there any way to get the course reading for this over the internet?

  • They need to make there version of eclipse compatible with Linux.

  • Does any one know how I can get this software to program karel? I mean this entire package? The worlds/programs/eclipse? What versions and everything?

  • @AnhadJaiSingh: Go to the cs106a link in the video description, then click the Old CS106A Videos link under cs106a resources. Here you can download the whole course package for convenience. It includes Eclipse together with everything Stanford related. Though you'll have to import assignments yourself.

  • @Lemon77UG Thanks A Lot! But can you give me the Install instructions?

  • @AnhadJaiSingh

here is the website for the program Eclipse the professor is using....

     eclipse.org

  • @AnhadJaiSingh

here is the website for the program Eclipse the professor is using.... eclipse.org then go to the downloads section

  • @AnhadJaiSingh: AFAIK, you simply extract the eclipse archive for your platform and run eclipse.exe. You can put a shortcut to the exe on your desktop, since there is no installation procedure that does that automatically. Now you can import any assignment files and the acm starter project (which you'll need when you get to lecture 4). Anyway, there is a pdf handout "05-Downloading Eclipse" which you should read.

  • @AnhadJaiSingh I think they're available on the stanford site

  • modern college student, lol

  • CANDY MAN

  • "Left like a Democrat", how Liberal you are California

  • this is pretty interesting, started watching these out of an interest in switching to computational biology at my university from biology, cool how similar the programs are to genes in dna sequencing, start command equal to the start codon for a gene, each command is a little amino acid and the closing bracket is the stop codon, making up a nice protein/program in the end

  • I'm surprised there are so many questions. The students always remain silent in my programming classes.

  • Lol ONLY 20 pages.

  • @mattmun12 That's almost nothing.
