I keep going farther back in time with these videos. Was there ever a point in their career where they didn't just totally rock? Alex's tone and execution on some of the chords is unrealistically good for that era. I am kinda glad Geddy doesn't wear white leisure suits any more, though.
July 1974 is when Neil stepped on the scene. This a show from 1974. prolly the only time you will ever see John Rustey. He is poor health and not well.
This was from time of great work and fun for all...
I wonder if RUSH ever listened to BUDGIE? Gee. I wonder... Funny that RUSH never mention BUDGIE in any interviews. Listen to some BUDGIE and you'll know why. I love 'em both of course but just can't understand Alex or Geddy giving Burke and Tony their kudos.
To AlexanderDeLarge08.......YES music is eccentric and odd which makes their ability to write catchy and melodious music all the more amazing. Check out "Yours is no disgrace" from The Yes Album or "Roundabout" and "Heart of the sunrise" from the Fragile album. All great ten minute `three minute` pop songs...and of course a HUGE influence on Rush. God bless `em
I keep hearing that Rush are up there with the `Prog` greats? In 1974 Rush were playing this kind of stuff (as much as I love it!). In 1974 YES were touring the Tales From Topographic Oceans album (their sixth album) playing song songs like Close to the edge and Heart of the sunrise etc. Um...surely prog-rock means "when rock music is progressive?" Conundrums abound?
I agree Rush is an incredible rock band. Peart wrote alot of "story" lyrics. And you and I was a song that Jon Anderson and the boys basiccly laid the plans for "prog rock" Hate that expression. Hawkwind? Kansas? All Rock not "prog bloody rock"
but is Yes as catchy and pleasing to the ear as Rush? NO Sure, Yes is talented but their music is eccentric and odd. (and I'm a musician of 20 years writing this)

John Rutsey did not go on the first tour with Rush because of his diabetes, the doctor said the tour would kill him.

Health reasons is what I remember. Do you think Geddy looks like Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep back then? Fan since 74...
PaBasser 3 years ago
He looks more like Glen Hughes when he was performing with Deep Purple at the Rainbow in 1974.

Yeah, Diabetes.
In fact, he died only 13 days ago (March 11 2008) coz of Diabetes.
