  • I flew southwest over the summer break. WOW!

  • I don't know why people are so enthusiastic about Southwest. The jets are loud, there is no inflight entertainment, and our plane almost overshot the runway when landing at SNA one time which was really scary. US Airways offers flights at the same price but the experience is better. I go to ASU and the flights from PHX to SNA are sometimes even cheaper on US Airways, which is a completely better airline, including 1 checked bag, . Airbuses are so much more comfortable.

  • im going on a southwast plane form az to ny this sunday!! and i jluvvv the plane ride with the snakcs and hte drinks and the naps and the oging int he air! idk im a weird person :P

  • my only reccomendation for southwest is to get some in flight entertainment

  • I'm strictly xjet,Delta, and of course southwest...here in Phoenix southwest is all you see;)in ky where I'm from you see a lot of delta and xjet:))

  • how r they awful? there pilots that are very proffesional if they can get to where there at, and its a cheap airline that is makin more money than all the other airlines becuase they stick to such a basic fleet and dont spend it on shitty express jets and big 747's

  • But if all airlines only used 737s or only 747s, they would not make a profit either. I think the 767 is great for some international flights and heavy domestic or transcontinental routes

  • the planes have holes in them but they probably resolved that problem

  • no natbrain, the spoilers onl came up to assist the airlerons.

  • Yes I know now

  • Woohoo! SWA!! The only airline I fly one!

  • Southwest is the best U.S. airline ever!

  • southwest sucks

  • then why ru watching this?

  • Southwest airlines is one of the most profitable airlines. I LUV it! It's cheap and I can sit wherever I want!

  • Why are spoilers up shortly before lift off? Wouldn't that slow the plane a little and/or reduce the lift?

  • th spoilers help assist the alerons in rotating the aircreft, perfectly normal

  • I know I figured it out. The spoilers deploy on the side that turns in order to help it rotate.

  • Takeoff towards the east, from Sky Harbor. :-) If you were going to California, you probably made a complete U-turn.. those always made me nervous. :-) And it would account for a slightly longer flight. Cool video!

  • Is this an Embraer 175? If so, these are pretty cool aircraft...smooth and quiet and very roomy.

  • Southwest doesn't operate Embraer aircraft. Just 737s (keeps costs down)

  • Oh, okay. It looks a lot like the E175's flaps and winglets (the nacelles under the wing look like it, too).

  • do you know that SWA pilots are required to taxi on only 1 engine then start engine #2 up right b4 takeoff? cool

  • Even though Southwest gets bad puclicity its my favorite arline

  • im going to be on southwest airlines on thursday going to california from phoenix arizona

  • in your description of this vid, i think by "roll? you mean "rotate"

    just fyi!!

  • No, I mean the takeoff roll. It's just an expression. Sometimes if you tarry too long, tower will ask if you are "rolling" or not, meaning, are you intending to take off.

  • oh, is that the thing were the pilots just keep taxiing down the runway? (sometimes; via flight simulator, that is something I do, simply to better straighten the aircraft for a better takeoff)

  • Rotate is when you pull up.

Roll is when you are rolling down the runway, gaining speed getting ready to pull up.

  • Takeoff makes me nervous but it feels cool when you're going so fast because you're pushed back in your chair. uhhh how i miss phoenix

  • I REMEMBER THIS DAY AT THE JERSEY SHORE

  • I love it when you take off like that.

  • Good video but too short. It would be nice to see some of Phoenix from the air

  • where was the flight to?

  • LAX

  • More specifically, PHX (or KPHX) is Sky Harbot Airport in Phoenix, AZ

  • what airport is phx

  • Phoenix, AZ

  • i love the takeoff on a plane, but now im terrified to go on a plane cuz im all paranoid about maybe a hijacker on the plane =[ although i have been on a plane after 9/11. nice video

  • its alot safer to fly today theres like a 1 in 500,000,000,000,000,000,000 that there is a hijacker on ur plane

  • Nice video. I agree with YSBK, the spoilers are used to correct for a slight crosswind. PHX takeoffs are neat because the 110-degree F summer heat makes for a challenging t/o.

  • pr1268, so true about the excessive summer heat making for a very turbulent takeoff. I lived in Phoenix for about a year and a half, and I flew back and forth to CA.. and only one of those takeoffs was horrendous - and it was mid-day, summer. Never did I fly during the day in the summer, out or into Phoenix, again. :-b Only very early morning, or evening flights!

  • oh u big wus lol, jk, but seriously come on

  • LOL @ the guy who said speed brakes were for extra lift...they're AKA spoilers, they SPOIL LIFT...that's why they're used when descending fast and needing slowing, as well as spoiling lift on a wing when turning to turn quicker..

  • Thanks, Myles.

  • Takeoff has always been my favorite part of flying. I love hearing the turbines rev up! Nice video.

  • Also you can tell because when the pilot puts up the speed brakes the plane starts to lift as the planes wheels leave the ground and the plane is up the pilot releases the speed brake for altitude gain.

  • I am studding to become a commercial airline pilot, the speed brakes are used durning takeoff to create a large amount of lift on the wings durning takeoff. If you think about it the wind is pushing towards the wing, and the speedbrake is pushed up, so the wind is forced upward which allows the pilot to takeoff in a shorter amount of runway. It is bad though for the plane because it puts strain and stress on the engine durning takeoff. Hope this helps

    -myles

  • Not correct. Speedbrakes do not increase lift of a wing in any circumstances. What you're seeing is the pilot using some right control stick to level the wings as the plane is taking off into a right crosswind. Go look up "crosswind technique" in your study. On most airliners, the speedbrakes come up in small amounts first prior to aileron movement, explains why you don't see any aileron movement as you'd normally expect. The speedbrakes on the other wing would be dead flat.

  • Very good explaination, and also correct.

  • interesting that the pilot would be using the speedbrakes on takeoff like that. is that usual for a 737?

  • Yes, I don't think he's actively using it. It seems they are going up automatically, sort of as if they were not locked down and the pressure is bringing them up.
