  • @mattetho Well isn't that incredibly Christian of you eh?

None of that Love Thy Neighbour and Turn The Other Cheek stuff eh?

  • I wish he sang the Finland song the same way he did on the python contractual obligation album :), it would probably annoy the other busriders though.

  • @MrChicagokilla

Knowing finnish public transportation in the rural areas, i'm pretty sure that the bus was empty.

  • @mattetho meaby you shuld stop reading the apoligetics bullshit and learn more. when the modern medicine and hospital system arived to sicily from araby, the church was very hostile against it. the greek had universitys far before christianity ever existed and hindus even before that. majority of western culture has being born far before the christianity ever existed and has flurished dispite it, not bechsoe of it. the christianity had to be forced to exept the western values.

  • i love you. but be aware of finnish sauna treatment. )..

  • i could move like to USA from finland but i would not move away forever

  • This border no longer exists because of Schengen...

  • @Bozewani And that's a good thing.

  • i live in Finland yey! XD i love Michael Palin =33

  • Moi Michael! I always imagine that when he has holidays of his own he goes to Finland. I can't wait to go myself sometime ^_^

  • When was this filmed? =)

  • @liikennekartio 1992

  • I just read this book! Is there a way to find out if PBS will show this or any of the others soon? I loved the book and would love to see the show

  • Michael Palin is so wonderful - I adore his travelogues, and to be singing the Finland song as he enters the country? That's just lovely!

  • superrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • Mexican Nuuttapukki??!

  • year 2010 2020 2030 2040

    people 5,357 5,547 5,683 5,730 millions

  • Yeah we believe in Ukko Ylijumala, not any your bullshit. The only god is Ukko. What school did you buy your PhD papers lol. I bet it cost you 100$. Waste of money. So what about your country? Islam will take over your country soon and there is nothing you can do.

  • @jvierinen and akka is his goddess. so there is two, one is femine and other is masculity. then there is tapio and ahti.

  • @gooddarkjedi do not forget Pellervo god of harvest and of SAHTI.

  • Well you are so wrong again. Check the facts before say anything more stupid.

  • Well you are so wrong again. Check the facts before say anything more stupid.

  • Wow, it's already been two weeks. I completely forgot to reply. I thought maybe I shouldn't, but I thought I might as well give you this one last thing:

You really are a pretentious prick if you think using the word 'ass' somehow devalues my argument.

And how have I been spanked exactly? Practically all your replies have been ad hominems and you never actually addressed a single one of my (admittedly few) points.

Whether you reply or not is up to you, but I'm done here.

  • yeah here we think our self! that is the big difference between u and I. We believe in us and not any bullshit. u can believe what ever u think, but dont come here talk shit about our country. It seems that u have been brainwashed .

  • lol you are so funny dude!

  • Dont teach us this bullshit. Just how many people we have killed because of religion? We think that we are better than the others and it gives the right to kill the non believers.

  • "Without Christianty there were be no hospitals nor universities" - Well you should learn your self history and check the facts. Christianity has not invented these.

  • @jvierinen yep.allso when portugalis went to japan, they finded that the buddhist universities put the all european universitys to shame. allso hindus had universitys before romans. but all of these had the same proplem.... the religion was in the way of true education. allso romans and greek had public hospitals. and the mediceine and hospitals came to europe from middle east from arabs. the church was orginaly against the hospitals bechose the healing in there was not "spiritual".

  • @jvierinen takas kouluun...

  • @jvierinen Christianity killed the Roman empire. The ancient Rome was 1000 years ahead of christian knowledge of medicin. Go to the nearest university and ask about it.

  • @aivopark

Actually, it really seems more like christianity saved the roman empire, more than anything.

I can't speak to their knowledge of medicine, it's not like the romans were especially advanced themselves. Biggest bunch of barbarians in history.

  • Oh and sorry it took so long to answer, haven't had the time to read my emails for a couple of days ;)

  • It is true that philosophy is only sort of a hobby for me and that I haven't majored in it or anything. That does not mean I won't understand the arguments your superior (and rather condescending) mind comes up with. Are you so far up your own ass that you honestly think you know how much I know about this subject?

To be honest I don't think I'm going to bother going on about this with you any longer.

  • I must've misread you. I thought you said that 'god' always refers to a perfect being. I merely pointed out that ancient greeks referred to their gods as 'gods' and they were anything but perfect, but I guess you were only talking about christians here.. ?

It's all a bit confusing with you lot.

  • On the contrary. I doubt that you'd find it surprising at all that I don't have time to "read up on" things a random person in a YT comment section tells me to.

Telling me to read up on things is redundant. You have to understand, I consider arguing about these subjects mainly entertainment, as they rarely lead to anyone changing their minds. When I make a simple "undergraduate level" argument, more often than not I am aware of it and there's a reason for it as well. Won't you humour me? :)

  • Also, I was hoping you'd concentrate more on the "perfection is subjective" line rather than the rather obvious side-note before it.

If you can show me two people who, when asked to list characteristics of a perfect being, will come up with the same exact list - in fact, most probably won't come up with anything at all. For example, I don't consider being able to know and see everything to be perfect.. in fact I find it a distressing concept.

  • I know, I said I thought it was very clever when I was 10.

Instead of telling me to read up on things, why not go ahead and tell me how I'm wrong and I'm prepared to discuss it. I was expecting you to refute that resulting in a more interesting topic but if you don't want to play along then it's no fun :(

If you just keep telling me to read up on things (you know I won't, either), it'll just make me think if you really know what you're on about yourself..

  • I think it's you who doesn't understand the argument here. Instead of repeating what you said, why not concentrate on the point I made?

Whether this god of yours is perfect (which I quite clearly think I demonstrated is a contradictory idea) and so on is irrelevant to the argument, that is subjective vs. objective.

Look, the character limit is annoying as hell so if you really want to keep this going you're going to have to pm me, i can't be bothered doing it in comments.

  • Would you really characterise the ancient greek gods as perfect?

  • Yes, theories, can be disproved, but seldom proven. That's why I asked how to disprove this particular theory. It may well be that neither the existence nor the nonexistence of a god can be disproved. In that case you can freely choose to believe in any number (e.g. 0) of gods, but you ought to recognize others' right to a similar choice.

I see no connection with (a belief in) the existence of a god and morality or ethics: many god-believing societies engage in non-moral actions (e.g. slavery)

  • tl;dr - Whether god is perfect or not is irrelevant. Morality is subject to his will, and this effectively makes it subjective.

I don't understand theists' obsession with the word 'objective'..

  • You just had to go and characterise your god as perfect. Perfection is a self-contradicting concept. "If god is perfect then can he make a rock that's too big for him to lift?" is something I thought was very clever when I was 10, and it seems fitting here..

    Furthermore, perfection is subjective.

The only way I can see you going from here is saying that everyone perceives god differently and that his only universal characteristic is that he is 'perfect'.

    This doesn't make morality objective.

  • Not even bothering to have an actual discussion with you or touch on your other, very loaded questions, but I have a point to make.

You believe in a personal god, correct? So if this god decides what is moral and what is not, isn't morality indeed subjective?

  • mattetho: Always nice to have a discussion with a fellow academic, and a PhD. God's existence is a theory, and for the proposition to be taken seriously, it must be possible to falsify it. What would it take to prove that the theory of the existence of a God erroneous? Proving a theory correct is, ordinarily, impossible, and it's more fruitful to start from the other end.

  • you didnt give me any evidence. i gave you few documents to watch and you keep ignoring those. if you could reason wth religious people there wouldnt be religious people. and thats a fact. cmon you cant possibly believe any religion, there are so many holes in the story i cant even start to begin. but, I'll let you have your believes, i wouldnt tell little kid there is no santa either.

  • mattetho: who is really brainwashed here? You should realise it's people like you. Too many have already been killed in God's name. Don't be surprised that benevolent people hate religious fanatism, indoctrinated stupidity etc.

  • Your too deep in your god fantasy for me to pull you out of there. When you think that I, the independently thinking individiul is the brain washed one there is something really wrong with you.. Consider the fact that you are the brain washed one. I dont take influences from finlands tv etc, I think free in every aspect of life. Please, watch those documents i suggested you. If you aint 100% morone (like all believers are...) you will understand that there is something wrong with your "religion"

  • I'm not the one brainwashed. I once had an open mind about every worldview but I've come to the conclusion that there is no god. Maybe YOU should think for yourself. And btw I dont consider myself an atheist. I just dont believe in god. Have you watched those documents I suggested? Give me the biggest piece of evidence of god's existence.

  • Dont try that smug jesus attitude on me, its not working. There is no evidence of god's existence, none. Watch those documents for starters.

  • I cant believe this god crap. I'm sick and tired of arguing with you numbnuts you just dont understand. What hell makes you think that there is a god you stupid fuck. Religion is the only thing we have taken from the dark ages. Watch Religulous and Zeitgeist (The religion part) documents and you'll understand. do your own goddamn research and try to debunk those documents

  • i dont have it all on paper. but the cold fact is that all religions are bullshit

  • wihout christianity, the western world would be 1000 years more advanced.

  • Actually there isnt none scientific evidence of god's existence. Please, tell me some of your hardcore evidence, i shall then overwhelm you with the real facts.

  • HAVEN'T YOU HEARD OF THE BIBLE? IT HAS ALL THE PROOF!

    ...

God and where does the Bibles truth come from. Someone kill us Christians

  • what if a wrote a story book would you then believe everything it say

  • Not the sarcasm from the last comment.

  • Well I sat on his knee. Joulupukki's, not Michael Palin's. I was also blessed to spend 5 years working in this beautiful part of the world teaching graphics at Rovaniemen Taide ja Kasiteollisuus Oppilaitos which is now The Unversity of Lapland. I would highly recommend a visit at any time of the year. Hyvaa Joulua!

  • WTF is this religion vs. science discussion doing in a video about Michael Palin in Lappland..? Btw. to argue about religion and science is just as unproductive as comparing beliefs and knowledge. Belief in a religious way is an entity in itself. It's in the word. "Belief". It has nothing to do with measured facts.

  • Suomi synnyinmaa... soi sana kultainen...

  • "Arguing with a believer is like playing chess with a crow; First it throws the buttons away, then it craps on the board, and after that it goes away and thinks he won it."

There is even more evidence for evolution and science.

Let me ask you something, if Adam and Eve were the first humans, they were white. The first humans were found from Africa, and as you know, African natives are black. Where did black and Asian people come from, then?

  • Fine tuning? Thats called evolution. It's about being the species thats not dying. There is no evidence of god existing, and you know it as well as I do.

  • Thats a laughable suggestion that is also not true.

  • Well, believing in God is like believing in unicorns and Santa Claus for me.

  • Did he say that Norway is the creation of the 20th century? How'bout creating a shorter version of this chap, say, with one head shorter.

  • Finland's awesome. Never been there, but it's Awesome.

    // A swede.

  • Thanks ! You must absolutely come to here in Finland! Here you can drink strong vodka so much that you are wasteed and pp,l think you are having great fun and it is quite acceptable only here in finland to get wasted by strong drinking except in Russia too! You are all welcome to Finland! =)!
