Awesome video! I just planted 2 grape trees yesterday along my trellis in my garden, had no idea what to do or when to prune them so this vid helped heaps! This summer has been a crap one in Palmerston North - i'm sure everywhere in NZ though! So hopefully we will get some grapes next summer!! :) Cheers!!
Thank you Jaison. I'm very grateful for your pruning tips in reply to my email and I'd recommend this video to anyone! It demystifies a subject that most people feel necessary to shroud in mystery.
It may take you a couple of years to get them where you want. Train the leaders along what supports you have. During the winter you can trim excess leaders back to 2 buds from the main leader. from these buds new leaders with grow, and you can continue training these. The fruit comes on the new years growth. With new plants it takes a few years before they fruit. Be patient it will happen. In the meantime you can set up the skeleton of the plant. If useful give a thumbs up please Regards Jaison
Hello. I am new to grape growing. I planted in late May three sticks and now 6 vines (2 from each) are about 10-12 feet long. I would like them to go along my sundeck (10 ft high). Vines already climbed up to the sundeck and started moving along. In 2 months it will be freezing here in Pennsylvania. When should I stop the vines' growth (prune them)? They still need another 7-10 ft to go along the sundeck.
What should I do to make my grapes not only the decoration pieces but also productive?
@maryteatowel Hi, thanks for your comments. In between the rain I have been filming a video on how to make grapevine cuttings, it is real easy. You can then make cuttings of any vine, yours or one you may come across and propagate them into more plants.
