We have Red Tide several times a year in Hong Kong. I think I was surfing in it yesterday! Yuck! Was little pinky / reddish brown circles that turned the white surf into an orangey looking muck. I've read some of the algae is harmful & some is not. How do we know which is which before we go in the water? Will they close the beach & tell us if it is?
Thank you for this post. I was at South Padre Island four weeks ago, drove to the Beach Access on the North Side of most of the Hotels and Stores. I parked and got out of the Car, just for about a minute and suddenly started to experience Respiratory difficulties, coughing and stridor, thought that I may have to call 911, it was a sudden onset and we drove away from South Padre Island, to McAllen. yesterday, Nov. 5, 2009, we went back to South Padre Island, 4 wks later, it was still there.
this isn't the same as the redish algae I find in my reef tanks is it?? it seems to really irritate my skin when I clean it:( LOVE all 8 of my tanks though!!! fresh and saltwater enthusiest.
ok u guys..apart fgorm hte fact that its "so cool" its also killing everything in the sea. including fish, Plants, Turtles, dolphins, whales and everything else too. i don't find it cool at all. it's a pity we can't keep our planet in good shape.we need to start NOW...
very interesting video! the reason why i looked this up is because they compared the red tide to the incidents that happened in The Happening. thanks for the info!

It turns a reddish brown color when the cell concentration becomes high enough.

Kind of like the book of revelations when it talks about the rivers and oceans turning to blood.

In that one story of Mosis and the Pharoah. People believe that the cause for the river to run with blood is accually red tide.
