  • I love Shires! They're so pretty and good-natured!

  • im wondering if shires are better at trail rideing then smaller horses like qurater horses due to the size of thier hooves to me it looks like compareing a atv 4x4 to a tracked tank XD beautiful horse btw

  • Everyone seemed to be having a really good time. You have a beautiful horse.

  • Very pretty. I've always wanted to ride a draft.

  • I'm sooooo jealous!!

  • I'm looking to get a Shire next year, they are big gentle giants. And I'm a bigger fella, so I needed a bigger horse. It was down to Shires and Clydesdales, but I decided to go Shire after a years worth of research.

  • Beautiful horse :)

  • Shire horse were kept as draft horses but they're descended from the Great Horse of England upon which medieval knights rode into battle.

I bet you can picture yourself with a lance and a sword by your side, eh?

  • i can tell you from experience that the ride is similar to that of an agile elephant since i have ridden both

  • @catstreak You have ridden an elephant??That is so cool! Where were you??

  • he's pretty

    but holly shit he's huuuuuuuuge!

  • WOW =))

  • CUTE!

  • buatiful majestic creatures

  • fine animal.....What are they like 19HH???

  • oo wow hes gorgeous my trainer at my brn wants me to ride a shire quarter horse mixi see no quarter in him

  • We will be seeing this horse again in October. His owner will be camping with us. Perhaps I can get another video at that time.

He WAS fun to ride. Very good-natured, a little head strong. Responds well to cues and is afraid of nothing that I could find on the trail!

  • Wow, looks like such an AMAZING horse to ride. although.. i'd hate to be trodden on! xD

  • I would prefer to ride western

  • They do sell special draft sized saddles (only know of them in english style) but the western saddles look more comfortable. I'm also happy to see the tail is kept long :) Here in holland at shire stables they are supposedly between 5,000 and 10,000 euro but i'm sure you can get a nice one without fancy papers for less.

  • of COURSE you can ride a shire english style, they are originally from england after all :) i simply love shires, they're amazing gentle giants. Its so sweet to see how patient this shire is with the guy that climbed up on his back.

  • OOH i rememver the first time i rode a shire. He was(and is) a big black one with a white blaze down his nose, and goes by the name of Rock. he was such a stickler when i first started riding him. now he is a big angel. i ride him every week now just cause he needs the exercise... Xp John makes it look so easy!

  • I guess you can't be afraid of heights if you're going to ride one of those guys.

  • LOVEEE IT :L

  • uh my biggest wish is to get a Shire horse my self the greatest horse in the world after my mind

  • Im jealous!

  • OMG cute

tho weres ur helmet shes a BIG horse

  • Could anyone give me a quick rundown on how to train a horse to bow down like this? My horse is 17.1 hh and I always need a step or a hill to help me get on.

  • Treats, praise and patience ;)

  • wow .. is enormous .. but it is beautiful ..

    hehe .. may be a ladder? :)

  • I simply MUST teach my Clyde gelding to do this! We're doing eventing.

  • I am not sure of the cost. My friend has had this horse since he was a little colt.

  • How much do these horses cost?$

  • No cheaper than 3,000 for a broke Shire! You may find a green broke for around 1,500 to 3,000. Or a yearling around 1000. Any thing show when comes to a Shire your talking 30,000 to 100,000 no joke unless you find someone losing everything they own. like thats hard to find everybody is losing there farms and homes!

  • The closest I've come to seeing a shire was a Shire/morgan cross. Beautiful mix!

  • Love Shires<3

  • Where's your helmet, wise ass?

  • Why wouldn't a Shire be ridden English? That's where the frickin' came from.

  • you can basically ride any breed in any discipline.. just cos the QH is an american breed doesn't mean they're strictly ridden western

  • well, i have to say the shire horse look very impressive when riden

  • @MingTheMerciful Looks even better when they are ridden bare back, average horse saddles look funny on drafts.

  • What type of saddle you use doesn't determine the riding style, the actual riding does. I've been riding all my life, and have ridden in western saddles a couple of time and yet I am an english rider. It's what your doing in the saddle that determines what style it is. I mean, you could ride a horse in a race with a dressage saddle rather than a racing saddle and it would still be racing wouldn't it? Jumping a showjumping course bareback would still be showjumping. Catch my drift??

  • iv'e rode a shire there is one at my riding school hes like this 1 but really black hes beautiful hes called Domino lol my baby

  • I want a Shire! X ( On average they get bigger than a Clydesdale.

  • Looks like a really nice horse!

    Really pretty too.

  • i've never seen that a shire was ridden english, too!

    but i love western!!<3

  • He's pretty :D

Silly question time... Can you ride a shire english? or what?....

  • Sure! When I rode this Shire, I had to borrow a saddle and the only one available was a western saddle. I imagine more times than not folks ride Shires english style.

  • Thank you very much!!!!

  • shire horses are an english breed, and they are very very commonly rode english-style in the uk.

  • @JamminJemm I think you can :) if they are trained that way then yes :)

  • @JamminJemm I've ridden a Shire English style plenty of times. I'm only 5'4 so I'm sure I looked really teeny on top of such a huge animal, but all of them were lovely.

  • @undergroundalcoholsi haha, now I feel silly having asked that 2 years ago xD

My friend has a 3year old Clyde she had me show :) She's awesome :) We even raced her other horse (5yr old TB retired from the track) we lost of course xD

  • Gorgeous!

  • Comment removed

  • Way Hay! someones gettin abit rude aint they lol

  • who cares about tradition. its all about riding your horse on the trail and escaping the world. i don't even own a saddle for my horse. however, he is some wild looking bred horse. regardless of the breed, just have fun and gallop on the trail!

  • Nice :o)

  • Hello from austria, a very nice hors! You like see my shirer horse, watch oaklandshirer. Joe hav 18,5hh. We have shirerhorses for sale, please send me a mail.

  • I got a chance to ride a multiple grand-champion shire stallion in California. His owner drives him, rides English and Western, but has even done team penning with him! (I wish I'd seen that!) I rode him bareback, with just a halter. I was impressed at how smooth he was at the canter, and at the sheer length of his stride.

  • Lovely shire and very responsive to the leg.

  • wow!! how high is he? 17hh?

  • I am not really sure. I wish now that we had a "normal" size horse stand next to him so you could get a better idea of his size.

  • you should try to get hold of a measuring post.

But now I look my horse is 16.1hh and he's no where near that size.

    I'd say he's between 17.2 - 18.3hh

gosh, Id love a horse like that!

  • I will ask the owner. My friend lives far away, but I am sure she knows the size. When I find out, I will post the answer here. Just so you know, it is not my horse. The owner is the lady in the video that is holding the lead rope at first.

  • Oh my goodness, I have GOT to ask you for training advice! I've got a 3 yr. old Percheron standing 18hh that I would LOVE to teach to kneel down like that as I'm not sure if he'll grow even taller. I've tried to follow the directions I've read online about this, which uses treats-he became a treat HOG and started gettin' WAY to pushy(nippy)for treats and that took his mind off of learning completely-treat tunnel vision. Advice? Anyone? I'm no pro trick trainer-so any info. is appreciated! LOL.

  • okieee hange the situation ....it a lovley horse i want a shire

  • Noo i mean like ... your riding western so you use a western saddle .. if you were riding english youd use an english saddle.

Traditional isnt an issue. (sorry i didnt really word it well)

  • My best mates shire has an english saddle. Why have a western saddle if you ride english .. doesn't make sense!!

This clep there clearly riding western .. western saddle. Use you heads!

  • Lois, please read the earlier replies. The western saddle was all that was available on this day. It was either ride in it, or do not ride.

  • shires shouldent be in wester saddles :(

    but hes beautiful

  • You are right! But, this isn't my horse and that is the saddle that the owner had. I was just happy to be able to ride the horse, regardless of the type of saddle.

  • yea i understand he looks beautiful :)

  • You mean Western saddles? And why not? They do make western saddles for Drafts and Draft Crosses. What is your rational for this statement?

  • its traditional, to use english saddles duh!

  • "its traditional" is hardly an answer. I asked what is "your" rational to why western saddles are wrong. Perhaps my question was too hard to understand since "duh" is also in your sentence. I will also pass on the word to my draft friends that they are breaking with tradition by using evil western saddles. Thanks for the information.

  • I remain unimpressed with your inability to defend your own statement. I think you do not know enough about riding to make such a broad unsupported statement. I just purchased a new Western saddle for my draft and she looked beautiful in the Holiday parade. So enjoy your dim view of riding!

  • If we are sticking to "tradition" then surely the horse shouldnt be backed at all, and should be out plowing the fields.

A saddle is a saddle, and aslong as its fitted correctly, then i see no reason why this horse cant be ridden in a western style one. These are Amercians in the video after all.

I used to ride my ex-racer in a spanish saddle, is that wrong aswell?

  • Yes.

  • Care to explain why? Without resorting to "its tradition".

  • Its a traditon.Idiot.

  • One of the biggest horses ever xD

  • its like riding on tank :)

  • i luv those horses they gorgeous

  • Why didn't he use a step-stool?

  • The horse was trained to bend down. I wanted to see what that was like! I was just a bit too late, though.

  • I should do that to my girl. She's pushing almost 18HH so having her kneel a bit would help on the trail.

  • thats one beautiful horse.

Your so lucky to have a horse like that.

  • aww wat a cutie .. i love shires and bult horses.. i so hav to ride one someday :) cute vid and horse:)
