Golden Slumbers is BASED on/INFLUENCED by Cradle Song. Just like All By Myself is based on Rach's 2nd Piano Concerto. BUT, Golden Slumbers OBVIOUSLY was written and in public domain sometime between 1603 and 1945, because that version is in the 1945 film, and Paul's "composition" echos the verse of that 1945 variant perfectly.

If you discover an old minstrel tune from the early 1800s that is NOT copywritten (now in public domain), you can now claim it as your own!!

It was in Dekker's comedy Patient Grissel from 1603. Paul saw it on a music sheet that his sister left on his Dad's piano, but didn't know how to read notation at the time. So he used majority of the words and came up with his own melody, and it is not note for note of the 1945 film.
