now im a huge fan of both bands, but lets not kid ourselves. in terms of just pure skill, jake destroys trey any day. i mean trey is better than most guitarists out there, but jake can fucking shred. and accurately too, he can pull of a sick tapping or sweeping line every note spot on. as for trey the composer vs jake the composer, thats a different story. trey is obviously a better songwritter, but they both have different and great compositional minds, and those we can never compare.

umphs is def thee shit right now along with moe. or u-melt maybe comin up. but they do a lot of effects driven shit, and synthesizers and what what not. i love it, but in terms of cohesiveness as a band and sheer domination of their instruments phish is supremo. find any show between '91 and new year's '97 it is guaranteed to drop a jaw or two. they def jaded out but they were so money they didn't even know it for those years
