okay this is going to prolly draw some fire but would you mind a series of tutorials involving realistically affordable supplies for the average person i.e crayola and what not , then show the transition into prisma and such and
@webhead84 The techniques shown here can be used for any kind of marker, but you'll find that if you are serious about drawing frequently, higher-end art supplies will get you better results once you learn to work with them.
I would suggest getting a gray-pack of Prismas. :) You get a range of grays from dark to light, and drawing in monochromatic tones is great drawing practice. As far as markers go it is a great 'lots of bang for the buck' set. You can do a lot with 12 gray tones!
Hi ya I've been looking around for pens that can give an effect like that but have failed to find them may you send me a message on what type of pens you used thanks 07bolaa
These are also PrismaColor makers on top of the Gelly Roll pen which is created by a company called: SUKURA and can be purchased from their website if you can't find it locally - sakura of america dot com
As far as "abrupt strokes," this is a tricky one. You have to work pretty quickly for an even flat tone, meaning work physically fast and with a consistent pressure to the pen on the paper. This comes with time and experimentation for what the final outcome is to be.
My pen & pencil drawings are satisfactory, but I've been wanting move up to colorizing. I have Faber-Castel brush pens and a few Pigmas, but I can't seem to get around the "feathering" effect -- maybe it's "bleeding"? -- where if I am colorizing a large space and I overlap the color, I have a dark streak. Is there any way to avoid this -- a different medium, or what? I'd appreciate any helpful response. Thanks.
Awesome stuff! You should move the camera, tho. It's a bit annoying that you can't see the drawing because of the back of your head rather than the paper.
What kind of markers were they exactly? I'm lookin' to buy some. and what brands of brush pens do you recommend? And in your sketchbook videos, what do you use to bring out highlights in your drawings on that toned paper?
wow I really enjoy your art work you do such an amazing job I was wondering what type of markers you use and pens that you use cause I want my drawings to have more depth too them
These sketches were all done on Animation Paper. I purchased the paper from Cartoon Colour in Culver City, CA next to the Sony Animation Studio. It's fantastic and very easy and inviting to draw on.
Thank you very much for the kind comments. If you keep watching . . . I'll keep creating.
Facepalm,
Thank you for the comment . . . it was important to me to call out the overall shape or silhouette as well as draw contrast in the area by using a complimentary color in a graphic flat way that also points more attention to the detailed oriented mass of the character shape. Phew . . that was a lot of jibber jabber.
Thank you for the nice comment . . . I'll keep them coming.
Jason,
Thank you . . . but I'm quite sure you're worth you being you. Keep plugging away and let me know what you're working on as well as letting me know what you would want to see in a new video to see if I can conjure up some more magic.
Sketch7,
Thank you . . . I got another one in the hopper at the moment. Another Sketchbook flip through.
This is my favorite pen and it's permeant, making it very VERY easy to use a wet medium laid over it to finish off an illustration. I highly recommend it and can't say anything in higher praise.
The paper I used for this video is actually animation paper (unpunched) and is a great surface to work on. I would recommend any paper that can absorb a bit of punishment from the markers, which are all PrismaColor Markers in this demo.
Yes! You've uploaded! :D Nice. I love the video and how nice the drawings look. :D Do more when you're free and able. :D By the way, do you need special marker paper in order to draw with a marker? Cuz normal paper would bleed eh? Oh and I didn't catch it if you said so, but what markers are they?
So inspiring!

Man that's crazy, I always do a ton of pencil work before I even get the nerve to bust out a pen. You can just do it freehand and it looks so good.
