  • Never has there been a better televised series, this is true, but there are better and more accurate sources of info out there. Also this is the view point of the British intelligentsia, valid certainly, but not whole. Its as Napoleon said "History is the fable which the majority agrees on". If you really wanna know about Hitler & co.'s rise to prominence, read William Shirer's masterpiece. If you just wanna see some great and well produced ww2 footage, watch this :) I own it.

  • What an introduction. Sir Laurence Olivier still stands as the greatest ever narrator, and indeed the World at War was an outstanding documentary series. Almost all the people interviewed are deceased, their stories are not forgotten though.

  • Oradour sur Glane....a Jesuit calling card. The confessional box, with the symbol IHS emblazoned upon it...removed before the fire in the church and replaced in position with the bodies of two children placed inside. A testiment to who undertook the Holocausts under cover of War...the RCC and their Orders.

  • wow they can't even get the SA's name right

Read Rise and Fall of the third Reich, a lot more accurate than this bullshit

  • @OneEyeWonderWeasil sa is correct but one wonders if you took the time to view the whole series and see what the sa and later the ss were about . on one mistake you dismiss a whole documentary that was recounted by the people who were there.to me this is the definitive series there is none better. and also i have read the book you stated and mein kampf and many others

  • @OneEyeWonderWeasil

He doesn't say SR, he says SA using German pronunciation.

  • @OneEyeWonderWeasil you must be joking this, narrated by Oliver, probably the greatest actor of his generation, I must see this other series.

  • The World at War was a fantastic series narrated by the late great Lawrence Olivier. IMHO, this should be shown in all the schools.

  • The Sturmabteilung was the SA not the SR. Weird.

  • all these videos are great!

  • @soccer21928

All the credit goes to Thames TV, Issacs & the staff. The "Extras" has a lot of info on how it was done - basically by working for months or years to get the great interviews.

I have most of the extras up on username "historyvideos101" - also, the DVD set with all the extras are on Amazon, Netflix and most libraries.

  • @fucknignogs

    Your user name speaks volumes.

  • can Anyone help!??? I would like to know in which episode the advances in medicine in WWII are mentioned. Because I'm doing a school essay and I'm in need of some more info!!!

    thanks

  • It's sad that so many lunatics today subscribe to Nazi madness. I'm not Jewish, in fact, I am not associated with any religious belief. But I do believe that if there were such a thing as the "chosen people" it would have to be the Jews. Why? Because they've been the target of so much unfounded hate for so many years.

  • You may not realize how right you are.

  • can anyone please point me to the soundtrack of this hour long show? i need to have it O.o

  • Oradour massacre was the result of a dangerous cocktail. On one side the Das Reich Waffen SS took revenge of the attack by the resistance, and the torture and burning of one of their soldiers; On the other the resistance took advantage of this to blame the Germans and to kill the non communist french. Pure and simple hoax.

  • seen quite a few of them on the BBC all of them excellent cause the BBC Can say the truth without worrying about upseting big businesses n lose their adds money unlike itv n all american channels top marks for the BBC war its not supported by older ppl many who fought n suffered attrocious cruelty ask the EX prisoners of the japs on the Burma railway if they want another war

  • u know u r wrong the jews had to rely on money for their survival so they became good at making money and some jews used their money to try n control. theior host countries for survival first, but for power n control after, but this is Not the majority of the jews by a long way now of course the zionist are no different to any other facist group bend on world domination why u think so many jews are helping the palestinians n are against what the facist in israel are doing?

  • whos the SR coz thats wot hes saying but its the SA that he means or is there a group called the SR

  • I'm not saying your totally wrong in your statement. Older generations grew up with war (this particular one being unavoidable), and it's part of their collective memory, but the real impetus to war is almost always provided by entrenched wealth. This is usually in the hands of older people having accrued their wealth over a longer period of time or through inheritance. Not all old folks are rich so my complaint is with the tone of your argument, labeling all old people as war mongers.

  • Sorry, but the draft does not exist any more. The warriors of today are predominately under thirty and for the most part are eager to be fighting. Do you seriously believe that appeasement wasn't given enough of a chance leading up to WWII? You haven't paid enough attention to this documentary. War persists because we are human beings full of hatred and prejudice even towards the old.

  • War advocates grab old people? Tell that to the families of all those old coots dying in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you have a problem with elderly people maybe you should kill yourself before you become one of them.

  • War persists in existence because the older generations advocate it. They quickly buy into this programed idea of solving problems with war. The newer generations have to pay for this legacy of war as a solution and go out and get killed. Its a legacy that should have gone away along with Nazism. We should have stopped fighting each other like this and we should have stoped killing each other a long time ago.But this war ideology has been washed up through a targeted support by older generations

  • Old 60-80 year old people probably get a huge hard on from seeing this. Their sheep like righteousness to "war as a soution or standard" as spoon fed to them is dispicable and to this day they get aroused by war. Which is why war is supported to this day because war advocates grab the kind of people that will most support it: Old people.

  • Well, might as well kill yourself now.

  • Comment removed

  • you're not more than a dirty racist rat !

  • this obviously isnt your country, move on

  • The beginning of The World At War episodes is excellent: photos of ordinary civilians being engulfed in the "flames" of war. It's a poignant beginning to an outstanding documentary series.

Too many people today romanticize war, forgetting its horrors, as though it were a simple test of manhood. War should be criminalized and those who wage it answerable to law.

  • "The beggening of the end of days" 1914...

  • if you lived in england you would understand

  • LOL. Well, now......seems there's no limit to your madness actually, is there?

  • You "rabbithog" were either severely abused and/or are off your meds.

  • no, i was neither abused or on meds, i have just had enough of people like you in soceity, put up or shut up

  • when you think about how much of a state england is now, wouldnt it have been a good thing if the germans had won the war?

  • uh...no.

are you the same type who says, "right and wrong are just a matter of perspective, after all..."

you clown-face. you know what, if you have many more thoughts like this, you should get yourself to a mental welfare facility. be sure to park "long stay".

  • i tried but the place was full up with foreigners

  • It's so sad what has happened in these times. Why and how could this happen? This was so stupid.

I'm so happy we live in democraty and peace now. But a few Nazis still exist. They still don't understand.

  • Our generations, (those of us under 60 years old in the US) and those under 50 or so in Europe, have not lived in desperate times. The 30's was a decade of world economic depression and unemployment. The Treaty of Versailles made it worse for Germany and made it possible for the rise of Nazism.

WW I was started by old world politics and was a European Civil War; World War II brought it to an end.

None of us knows what could happen if another major depression returns - or a major oil crisis...

  • With representative government, it's harder for fanatics to gain and hold power, but reactionary government can come as a result of a crisis. In America, September 11th was that kind of event; people stop thinking rationally and look for a leader who seems sure of the answers. Small groups can always cause such chaos in democracies. We survive these times by applying the "Golden Rule" to everyone - not just our friends.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." -- Thomas Jefferson

  • I would hardly call the Republicans who ruled during the terrorist attacks fanatics or a reactionary government. They were trying to protect the USA against a wmd attack. In late 2001 we all thought another mass attack would occur. The "Golden Rule" ? Bush negotiated with Kim Il Jung who murdered 2 million of his people and launched missles/nukes. No thanks-we should be ready to show force when needed.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing -Burke

  • The Neo-Conz (Cheney & company) had plans in place 'when" America was attacked. I'm not among those who believe they were behind the attacks, but they did know it was coming & they were ready to profit by it. The powerful always have bigger dream$ & the "American Empire" would have been well on it's way if not for Iraq. It's hard for Americans to see the reality of our actions as blind hubris.

There will always be terrorists; the Constitution is more important than revenge.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:27

God chose what the world considers weak to put what is strong to shame.

  • murphics talks sense:

we have democracy and peace [kinda] at present. It's not necessarily an absolute - and the relatively few Nazis that exist - or Neo-Nazis/Nationalist/ Supremacist/Fundamentalist, or whatever the hell you call this type of crazy - they understand well - they just don't care; and the ones that need worrying about aint dumb. future issues that give this madness purchase are what we need to think about, as a race:energy, food and population. squeeze - plus vandalism like 9/11.

  • damn i bet it will be scary to live on those times...

  • Best documentary ever.

  • elberiver is fucking idiot lolll

  • I agree. Some are more dangerous than idiots.

  • Hey elberiver11, is this a competition to see how many times you can get the words 'child killers and rapists' onto the page? I think it's time to let it go, I'd be interested in reading comments other than yours here, maybe you could look for a more approriate discussion forum eh?

  • hear them at 4:06 heil HEIL heil HEil bunch of kiss asses

  • there nazi's you idiot their hailing victory just like im sure you bless america you unknown facist moron

  • Another revisionist with a Procrustean viewpoint ( You know, the Greek mythological innkeeper that made his guests fit his bed by stretching them or cutting their arms & legs to appropriate size).

  • lol

  • Excuse me - but what is there to "investigate" is was war.

Be happy that the war in Europe did not drag on longer - if the battle of the bulge has succeeded and Germany had made a major push... There would have eventually been A-Bomb(s) with Germany's name on them.

Talk to the Polish and the Russians about the excess of war...

  • And the Germans didn't kill women and children? In Russia? In all the countries Hitler attacked? Idiot. lol

  • some did, just like america and britain did some too. (i am american so i am basing this on fact) because they were angry, out of place, and suffered so much. but russia commited ten times all the war crimes (except the holocaust) than any other country. there are huge amounts of accounts by many germans, polish, and fins on these crimes.

  • The fire column of the Firestorm-holocaust , triggered by Churchill and Roosevelt, reaching into the sky, could be seen hundreds of miles away. The city was burning for 7 days. Corpses of children, babies and mothers were found in Dresden cellars even 30 years after the Firestorm-Holocaust..

Limbs of German children and women were found hanging in trees, miles away from Dresden, weeks after the massacre.

  • The Churchill and Roosevelt, two warcriminals responsible for the death of millions of innocent children and women, deliberately attacked an undefended city, packed with 500 000 German refugees from Silesia, mainly women, babies and children.

The British and American criminals remain unpunished until this very day. In Britain, they errected monuments to honour their rapist and child-abusing warcriminal Churchill.

  • The attack on the hospital-city of Dresden, European centre of Beauty, Art and Opera, was called a "heroic act" by the warcriminals Churchill and Roosevelt, who had ordered the massacre of innocent children and women.

Dresden had become a haven for hundreds of thousands of Refugees and for the wounded, trying to flee the mongolian Allied rapists and childkillers. The city was unarmed.

  • The British and American gangsters should stop lying about their history, and about how they started all wars of the 20th century with false-flag operations.

Wall Street and the Rothschilds, the Anglo-American Bankster Mafia, have made Trillions with killing people, with stealing German land, with looting German art and with child-abusing and raping German girls and women by their Mongolian Allied soldiers.

  • The Allies commited the biggest mass-rape of children and women human history. The massacre of 3.0 Million German children, women, elderly and POWs by genocide, in American concentration camps and communist GULAGS was called "liberation", and throwing half of Europe under a Communist Dictatorship was called "bringing freedom".

  • Enough! Email each other Elberiver11 & randy95023

    You are blocked.

  • The "World at War" documentary played on PBS in 1973-74. It inspired me to study Military and World History. In my home I have one room filled with a massive library. I've watched virtually every Documentary ever made on WW2 and still find the "World at War" as the finest, and most honest and complete program ever made about the war. Laurence Olivier's narration is priceless and adds so much to the delivery of history. Thanks Murphicus for posting all the great stuff!

  • how many veterans have you spoken to?

  • Mickey- Thanks for asking. Throughout my lifetime I have spoken to, or personnaly known hundreds of veterans. I had close friends and family that served in WW2, Korea and Vietnam. 8 uncles, 6 of whom I was quite close with served in WW2. Due to my age I had friends who served in Vietnam and one guy from my small town was killed in action, Vietnam 1970. -continued-

  • -continued- I had 3 uncles wounded so severely in the Pacific theater that they received lifetime disability "benefits" from the VA. Even though I never personnaly served I've always had a strong affinity for those who have. I sometimes regret that I didn't directly serve in the armed forces even though I worked for the DoD in the late 80's and early 90's; mostly on Naval weaponry of a classified nature.

  • Don't you find that the praise each side gives the other while being interviewed on here, whether it be German, American, Canadian, British, Japanese or other quite moving?

  • "Lest we forget". This series can never be remade to such a degree as it was made at exactly the right time while many from the conflict were still alive and the memories still fresh. Knowledge of these times is ever more important as this generation dies.

  • If anyone has NOT checked out the extras under "Historyvideos101" please do. The interviews with the makers of the "World At War" are amazing in of themselves - on how long it took to get many of the big ones -

Also, the unseen interview with Vannevar Bush is extra amazing! Vannevar Bush was seen as the second most important civilian in the USA (to Roosevelt) - he directed the weapons research programs...

  • It was the gravity of the voice-over that lent the series its greatness, along of course with the incredible footage of the heroism and suffering of both the military men and women and the civilian populations - of both sides.

Globalisation means no more nations as such, only corporations and brands (Australia as brand, UK as brand, US as brand) and war is now cut-throat market competition (no blood for oil), invasion as the ultimate takeover bid.

  • Love the series i watch it on BBC quite often, real educating about the war.

  • "Where one burns books, one will soon burn people...".

  • this is one of the best serialised ww2 documentaries ever made.

  • couldn't agree more I've lost count of the number of times I've watched the series through and it never gets boring.Considering how old the documentary is it is truly timeless

  • good video

  • what town was this??

  • Oradour-sur-Glane

I will post a link under "More Info"

    oradour(Dot)info

  • If you go to Google Earth and search "Oradour-sur-Glane in the Haute-Vienne" - there are probably close to 100 photos that people have posted.

  • ok thats great thanks for your help

  • Here we are with brown and his EU nightmare.

What did our bravest die for...?

  • this use to be a tele series when i was a child. i use 2 stay up late at night 2 what it. it was on public tele.

  • for the most americans world war is cool

  • got to get it

  • HOLY SHIT MAN!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!

  • If you click on the "more info" link, there is a 12 part lecture series (30 min downloadable mp3 files) on "Hitler's Empire" - also, more of this series and others on WW II that I put up under "historyvideos101"

  • Thanks for posting this. One of the best documentaries of all time. About, perhaps, the most important epic of all time.

  • A great series. Very British-centric of course and somewhat anti-communist but pretty impartial overall.

  • Excellent....

My fathers stories through his eyes.

  • OMG, i watched this as a kid! the saddest series i have ever seen to date!

  • Moving piece of television xxx

  • wow lot of hate going on there, is it that repressed sense of small island inferiority you brits have since your empire was taken from you?

  • Taken by whom?

  • I'v got all 26 parts of the documentari...9.7 stars on imdb....best ever documentari!

  • Not only one of the best documentaries ever made - the first 90 seconds stands as one of the most powerful sequences ever written for television.

Neal Ascherson wrote the words "down this road, on a summers day in 1944 the soldiers came...nobody lives here now..."

That's how you hook an audience and keep them watching! Great stuff

  • This is one of the best documentaries ever made

  • when the everyday world around you seems to have gone mad you will accept madmen as you leaders - simply to have someone to turn to and something to do - it was like that in 1933 and that is still the truth - 65 years dont change Man not even 650 will do it - men will talk fine words and show how civilized they are but when it comes down to killing, the its still the same - killing - blood is blood, murder is murder - terror is terror and Mankind is Mankind

  • You sound like a Marxist to me, the best economic system that works in practice is Free Markets with regulations. Only system that allows the bottom to climb and pull themselves to the top.

Versailles yes put a humiliating stink on the german peoples, however, does that mean the obvious solution was to violate the armistice agreenment and to take over europe AND North Africa, and oh yeah...........KILL the jews like the USSR was doing???

    "Who now remembers the Armenians?"

    -Adolf Hitler

  • Show me the Marxism!

As Eric Hoffer said: "a society without money means there is no freedom of choice, since it is ruled by sheer power, and no equality, since brute force cannot be distributed."

My guess is that you have added the caveat of "regulation" lately.

Government should help those in the dawn, the twilight and the shadows of life, as HHH said.

Corporations, should not have the legal status of a "person" as the 14th amendment gave it.

    Nazis=hubris.

    If Iraq had gone smoothly?

  • Yes corporations as 'entities' is near criminal Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin fought against the concept in the new USA. They (corporations) had already been in extent in Britain and helped to cause the failure of representative government in the colonies. This concept was extended to India and Africa later. Thank God for the second amendment.

  • ww3 is on the way. there is another great depression on the way. and ask youself what effect the last great depression had on the start of ww2

  • Also consider the russian attack in the north this would have lead to the permenent divission of japan in a korea type cold war frontier. would japan be united today I doubt it? also for the japanese do u beleive that after taking taking those 200 thousand casulties u would be allowed to keep ur emperor, somehow I highly doubt it. Also it should not be forgotten that the japanese empire started ww2 and there inhumanity to conquered civillians and pows meant that the war had to be ended quickly.

  • A CORRECTION: World War II started on 28 June 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles.

It really does matter how we treat other nations and we need to keep perfecting an international organization that will hold the leaders of nations accountable for their actions.

Alliances are what sowed the seeds for WW I and the winner takes all attitude is what sowed the seeds for WW II.

If every action of a conflict is held accountable, people will be more human. We can't rely on God, Allah, Karma to decide.

  • Nations will always try and do whatever is in their perceived "best interests" and like corporations who are geared to think is quarterly profits, governing politics is geared to sustaining the party in power.

The most powerful will always think it ridiculous that weak tell them what they can't do.

As long as the weak/defeated have no voice or power to resist the powerful, there will be terrorism.

If we had been a truly great power on 9/11 we would have acknowledged that.

    There is $ in war.

  • Whether "World War II started with the Treaty of Versailles" has been much debated. After the failure of the German offensives, in Sept. 1918 General Ludendorff wanted an armistice. His aim was to obtain a lift on the Allies' blockade, a relief for the German army, and a national mobilization for "total war" - perhaps also an alliance with USSR. Then Germany would be in good position to attack again, and fulfill its ambitions of 1914. Versailles was "humiliating" as it curbed this plan.

  • What made the armistice and the treaty (that "punished" Germany so shocking and bitter to the German people, was that they were told that victory was just around the corner.

I put up a 6 hour lecture series called "Hitler's Germany' on my page. Look at the link under "More Info" and click it to download the 30 min lectures... It's really good!

  • Thankyou for those lectures! I am a year 10 pupil currently studying how Hitler came to power, and those downloads really helped me. Also, thanks for upoading this great series onto youtube, I can't seem to see it anywhere else.

  • I have read Speer and saw him interviewed on BBC Parkinson Show back in the 60's and it was quite evident that he was in denial as to his complicity in the use of slave labour for his programs (as did Werner von Braun.)

  • Under the 'historyvideos101' account there are some of the "world at War extras" that were made a few years ago. In them, Speer is exposed - that he had to have known...

  • You might wish to complement that with John Maynard Keynes' Cassandra-like Revelations found in his 1919 book, Economic Consequences of the Peace.

  • To all the fools who beleive the atomic bomb was a war crime. Fact, a massive usa lead conventional attack on japan would have resulted in millions of civilian deaths including school kids who were taught to kill soldiers with sharpened sticks, not to mention suicides forced or otherwise. Atleast 200 thousand dead american soldiers, was your grandfather in ww2, would u exist if this invassion took place?

  • From "The Thin Red Line"...

"War dont ennoble men; it turns them into dogs, poisons the soul."

  • This is the best documentary series about World War 2 I have ever seen. Anybody who loves WW2 history get this dvd series at Best Buy!

  • In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.

    Martin Niemoller:

  • Even at the height of his popularity during the Weimar Republic, Hitler never garnered enough votes to form a majority in the government: he had to share power with the other parties until he got the enabling act passed and could eliminate them from government. When that was done, he outlawed all other political parties making the national socialist party the only legal party in the country.

  • Hitler was not elected, he was conferred the title of Chancellor by president Hindenburg. He was the head of a coalition government along with the Nationalists and the Catholic Center party. In order for Hitler to form his dictatorship, he had to resort to violence to foment chaos. This chaos frightened the other parties and they approved an "enabling act" that suspended the constitution and allowed him to bypass constitutional government. The SA, or brownshirts, provided the chaos.

  • this is by far the best WW2 Doco, thanks for posting

  • I think Stephen Ambrose summed everything up well when at the end of the series he said,

"The most important single result (of WWII)is that the nazis were crushed, the militarists in Japan were crushed, the fascists in Italy were crushed, and surely justice has never been better served"

  • I DON'T defend the Germans! I DON'T defend any of them! You're an idiot! Do you READ what I write? I make the point that ALL NAZIS ARE GERMANS BUT NOT ALL GERMANS ARE NAZIS. You utterly ignore WHATEVER I write and peddle your own point of view in the process with impunity. I'm a patient man, but this is silly.

Of course they handed in people to the Gestapo! But they didn't know they'd be gassed! They knew they'd be taken to camps, but not gassed! It was all about the predatory fear.

  • correct!a german man said to his wife who was telling people about the gassing,be quiet, they will kill you, a dictatorship is like a snake you stand on its tail and you will be wiped out. the majority of the people didnt know what was happening

  • History is written by the winners.

Great series, helped with many an assignment

  • She said: * "Of course, the terrible things I heard from the Nuremberg Trials, about the six million Jews and the people from other races who were killed, were facts that shocked me deeply. But I wasn't able to see the connection with my own past."

When it came to surrender, I think the Germans would be defeated militarily and would have surrendered in any case. Japan was different. The Bushido code was applied to every citizen. The most average person would prefer to die than surrender.

  • I just find it funny that a White country saves the most destructive weapon for non-white people. If you look at the propaganda of the United States they clearly saw the Japanese as less than Human. You defend the Germans and not the Japanese which is biased.Germans killed Roma, the mentally and physically handicapped, liberals, Afro-Germans in the Rhineland, and, jehovah's witnesses. Like I said it would have never happend without the support of the people.

  • Duh, of course the world would not have allowed or accepted the use of the Bomb on white people, we are the most valuable....

  • Thus we see the process of genocide starting all over again. Your racism is deplorable.

  • Hmm, well the Nazi model didn't just say "blacks" and "whites".

If the Germans had won, it would have been the Slavs. Then the rest of the Jews (Ashkenazi Jews being the majority killed). Then the arabs, and so on and so on.

Such segregation by race is utterly pointless. That's what WW2 proved, forever.

Plus, the Bomb wasn't used for 'racist' reasons. It was used for strategic and tactical reasons- the militarists would never have surrendered without the pressure. The hundreds of thousands

  • who were sadly killed in the atomic attacks, to me (and to a lot of Japanese themselves) is better than the tens of millions who would have died in the invasion of Japan.

It was sad, deplorable, but it saved lives. It is, however, a slippery road, such pragmatism.

  • If you mean that the way I am taking it - and you are white, we now know one white person who is of very little value. Look in the mirror.

I have a feeling that karma is going to be a bitch for people who think that way.

The big bonus comes when the children of bigots get married to people of "other" races - and if they don't their grandkids do.

  • exactly

  • I'm afraid that hope is in vain. Just read the comments here, people advocated the use of nuclear weapons on Japanese civilians.America is doing more harm than good in Iraq. Sudan is engaging in genocide and no one cares. History is doomed to repeat itself.

  • During this war the Japanese had acted as less than human. No one is defending the Germans as I see it. Many a German died trying to protect Jewish people, gypsys, etc but no one is defending the Nazi's. And yes, when you are at war and those people are killing your kids, sons, daughters, nephews, , fathers, brothers you do see them as less than human.

In the end the "bombs" saved millions of Japanese lives and if we dicked around any longer the Japanese might have developed it as well.

  • I think that the fact that the atomic bomb was a "quantum leap" in warfare made it hard for both sides to comprehend how to end the war. Pre-nuclear logic would have given a cushion of time to change leadership as the end drew near. I actually doubt that would have happened though. The mindset of the people was that the Emperor was divine. Also, we claimed to have a stockpile of A-Bombs, which we did not.

If we had dropped the atomic bombs on Germany, I doubt that Hitler would have surrendered.

  • I think it is highly unlikely that the Allies would have dropped atomic bombs on Germany. Primarily because of the fact that Germans are white. You must be thinking i'm crazy but look at WW2 American propaganda directed against the Germans and the Japanese, you will notice that the Japanese were made to look like rats with huge teeth whereas the Germans were ridiculed but never dehumanised like the Japanese were. Dehumanisation of the Japanese made it easy to drop the atomic bombs on them.

  • We were more pissed off at Japan on the whole...

I think that a big part of why they were dehumanized is #1 - they way the "Japs" fought. If you watch the episode dealing with the Batan death march, it explains a lot about how those who surrendered were dehumanized by Japan...

Also, it was Japan who attacked the US, not Germany.

And, watch the "This is Japan" clips on the 'historyvideos101" account. "The Bomb" and "It's A Lovely Day Tomorrow" on Burma.

And yes, racism is a big part of it.

  • "the Allies would not have dropped atomic bombs on Germany. Primarily because Germans are white"

Initially, the atomic bomb was developed for use on Germany.

Besides, in 1939-1940 the French war committee asked nuclear scientists if they could develop atomic weapons. Answer: "Making a bomb will take years; but we could spray radioactive clouds on German cities, if needed". From the records I read, the Goverment of the Republic would nat have hesitated to nuke Hitler's Berlin, white or not.

  • ur a an idiot, do u know by the time that the bomb was finished the war in europe was over. dont talk crap it was total war and if the yanks had the nuke in 42 theyd have threatened and probally would have nuked berlin.

  • Late in the war, the US was much more concerned with the USSR (white people) than they were of being "conquered" by Japan.

Think about it, the USSR was marching West through Europe, and the US and Britain were not big fans of Communists! The bombing of Germany killed lots of white Germans and even though the effects (like in England) were the opposite of demoralizing, we kept bombing.

If we had tested the bomb prior to D-Day (and likely until well after the battle of the bulge; we would have.

  • The Allies were not without their war crimes. Hamberg was bombed and Dresden was completely in ashes. The failure to see the racism in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagusaki just misses the point. Hate will destory the world.

  • In the documentary "The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara" he states that Gen Curtis LeMay told him that if Japan had won the war, LeMay & MacNamara would have been tried for war crimes, for the firebombing of Japan.

Soldiers are taught to kill the enemy, it's up to politicians to set the limits on how much destruction they do.

Truman learned about the bomb late in the war. He had not thought out the long term effects of a weapon so new and different. No one had.

  • I firmly beleive that the 2 nuclear attacks upon Japan were entirely morraly justified, the crew of the enola gay are heroes and the united states and the British Comonwealth are the saviours of south east asia. The unstopable yellow tide was defeated by men of courage and valour who will be rerembered throughout history. JAPAN MUST APOLOGISE FOR RAPE OF NANJING AND INHUMAN TREATMENT OF POWS AND CIVILIANS, ALLSO THE RAPE OF COMMONWEALTH NURSES.

  • Like I said the distinction is pointless to make. Both the Allies and Axis engaged in war crimes. As for the Germans they fought hard up until the Battle of Berlin. The Japanese however did have unit 731 which was for human experimentation. Yet, that didn't mean that they need to anihilate civilians in nuclear attack.

  • How do you explain the shock and disbelief of the German people, and the world, when the sheer extent and nature of the suppression of the Jews? I don't think the average man knew how far the rabbithole went. Even people who were involved in the government didn't- ancilliary secretaries like Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary.

  • Untrue they may not have known about military operations, but averagre citizens were encouraged to hand over "suspicious people to the Gestapo. Average men were drafted into the army. They did not revolt. Yet the July 20th plot of 1944 some officers tried to kill Hitler, but they were too late.

  • Thank you for putting The Greatest and Most Important Documentary ever; on You Tube. One would think that after watching this that it could and should never happen again, but unfortunately it still does; do we not learn from History?

  • where they burn books, they will one day burn bodies.

    that line made me shiver.

  • Remember: always make the distinction between NAZIS and GERMANS. Very different.

  • greatest series ever made

  • Well they allowed it to happen so the distiction seems pointless to make.

  • Not really. Churchill himself often made the distinction. To brand a people is wrong, you brand the regime which moved and manipulated that people. If you do, it unfairly brands people forever. You blame the central authority and those involved in the decision making in terrible events. Like you wouldn't blame the Japanese people for Nagasaki, you blame the militarists who changed the country so radically. Simple.

  • Well what do call the bombing of Hamberg? The truth is the German population was supportive of their leaders so they are responsible. If you do nothing when something is wrong you are just as guilty. Like I said the distinction is pointless to make.

  • yeps you are so right 87fg. it's just like we can all blame the americans for being brainwashed by their fxxked up government and equally biased and misleading media. when people are mislead and rendered incapable of making any distinction it is the leaders to be blamed.

  • I never said that the war was unjustified, or the actions taken in the war were unjustified. I never said that. All I said was, that from a historical analysis, it is important to make the distinction. Because it stops unfair branding. That's all. You made a large leap of logic there! Because the German state was militarist, it militarised every area of society. That made Total War, sadly, inevitable. For example, I would say it was right to bomb Dresden! But because of its military importance!

  • Hiroshima and Nagusaki were nuked as a terror tactic. The US did not make the distinction between the Japanese. Yet, there was a double standard in terms of race. To say that the German people are innocent implies complicity. Yes the people were racist and allowed themsevles to be brainwashed. A totalitarian dictator would never hold power if he did not have support of his people. Your historical analysis is poor because you are forgetting the fact Hitler was elected.

  • As I remember, Hitler was handed power, and he gained power in parliament through Coalition. Furthermore, he stuck his other Nazi Party members in the Cabinet by suspending parliamentary rule, which was the last thing the establishment wanted.

All I'm saying is, you make the distinction to avoid any sort of bigotry. To condemn 'Nazis' does not exclude the guilty!

Furthermore, you must look at why such extreme regimes swept to power. In every single case, it was when the Status Quo was dead

  • or completely at the end of its tether.

For example, the Bolsheviks were swept to power because people were sick and tired of the Tsarists not reforming as they had promised after the previous threatening of revolution. The Bolsheviks promised to DO something. Same with the Nazis, they promised to end the economic disease which was wrecking Germany with hyper-inflation.

In almost every single case you care to examine, such extreme groups arise because the establishment has no currency.

  • THEREFORE, the people always act in desperation and not looking at the facts. Upheavels do that, you just want the alternative.

I make the distinction because there were many millions of Germans who were not Nazis, yet there of course were millions who were. I include Partei members here, not just the cabinet ministers and generals. It's a very simple analysis which covers everything.

Of course, Hitler and his men were given "the mandate", but it took a lot of effort to destroy moderacy.

  • You seem to miss the point. If you do nothing when something is wrong then you are just as guilty. At least Stauffenberg attempted an assassination in 1944. Do you realize how many serilizations, gassings, and, murders were done with the support of the peolple?

  • Enabling Act of 1934 combined the offices of Chancellor and president. How am I being a bigot? This is truth. People should be more vigilant and becareful in choosing leaders. I notice you defend the Germans while you say nothing about the Japanese.

  • Now, you must ask yourself- did I EVER say anything to prohibit action? I have never said that! In-fact, the total war tactics were altogether necessary because of the deep-seated militarism! Particularly in Japan!

All I'm saying is, call them NAZIS. Not GERMANS. Because the supporters you talk about were NAZIS before GERMANS. Is this analysis too subtle for you? I use it BECAUSE of my intense knowledge of the war!

And I'm not saying you ARE a bigot, I'm saying it's the road to it! Simple!

  • Total war tactics necessary? So the nuclear attack on Japan was needed? Now just think of this, would America have used the bomb on Germany if it did not surrendered? The White countries were apparently more willing to use a dangerous weapon on non-white people. The Allies did not make the distinction between civillian in that case. Nazism was a political philosophy embraced by the majority of Germans and that is a fact. Genocide cannot happen without the full support of the people.

  • That should have been surrender in the second sentence. Wish I could edit that. Anyways many German people allowed their children to join the Hitler youth (Jugend). Clearly, there was a collective consciousness in Germany molded by propaganda. Mind you Joseph Goebbles examined the techniques of Edward Bernays.

  • At least someone stood up to germany when no one else would. or else they may have spread their evil further.

  • My grandfather is a War's hero : was a fool. He had fighted The nazis without think. If he had known he would become ally with my Nazi brothers to clean the shit of that planet.

  • isn't it ironic, don't ya think?
