open diffs are superior because if you make it through, it means you know how too drive :P lockers are over kill in my mind unless your in some hairy shit that you could have gone around haha
The first Jeep doesnt have lockers in the front thats for sure.. His right tire was spinning and the left wasnt... If he had lockers in the front axle that tire wouldnt be spinning like that.
yellow driver is pretty bad at wheelin because thats easy lockers or not, go get a new rear end and a locker, it will be like night and day with no breakage
Airing down is when you take air out of the tires. Locking diffs also known as posi traction make all tires spin at the same speed, no matter what. You can push the brake and gas if you don't have lockers, but it doesn't work as good as an actual locker, and lockers are so affordable that a person would be a fool to go without them.
@mikeb1444 ive never heard it called that, just positive traction.ive had posi and it isnt a locker by any means, its just a lsd, when you take anything with posi into mud or sand guess what?one wheel peel.
A limited slip limits the difference in speed between the front and rear wheels relative to the turning radius of the car. If you have a one wheel peel, you have an open diff. If both spin at the same speed, it's a locker.
@mikeb1444 'Posi' is short for 'Positraction' which is the GM brand name for it's factory supplied limited slip type differential. Not a locking differential.
That's what it says on the sales papers for my truck. ('98 sierra) If I go around a corner with my foot in it, the inside tire will spin, and at some point, you can hear a "boom" sound and then both wheels will spin at the same speed. It's a locker as far as I'm concerned.
@mikeb1444 You have another and more rare differential option that is called by GM a 'Gov-Lock'. Or governed locker. They differ from a normal automatic locker in that they are not torques sensitve but instead need considerable wheel speed difference before they activate. They are not meant for crawling, but mud/snow with lots of wheel spin. They are notorious for exploding when engaging on surfaces with good traction. Cheers.
Yeah lockers do make things a lot easier, but so does learning how to drive and airing down. I have seen open diffs beat locked vehicles based on just that.
I agree, great video. Any idea of the TJ has a limited slip rear? Seems like that would have made a big difference. The longer wheelbase JK has a few advantages in that particular section of trail that made this more noticeable.
He needs to air down, it makes a world of difference especially with open diffs. Although I wish I had a locker still. I'm eventually going to get a lunchbox locker for my front dana 30, have a rear 35c so no go in the back for me. Running 31's and don't want to break that 35 c clip
@fastman454 Those tires look fully aired up too. Probably would of helped to air down those tires and choose a nice line to climb. I have open diffs and never really had too much issues. Disconnect front sway bar, air down to 15psi and roll. :)
my wj could of made through there easy

JK also had longer wheel base, auto trans(I think) vs manual in the TJ with short wheel base and not so good driver.

Plan on spinning your wheels without lockers, which tears up the trail and throws rocks at people behind you.

as always everyone on youtube posting comments knows everything.
The driver of the TJ looks to have choosen the same line as the JK to show Locked vs Open.Bottom line Its a great comparison
I run open diffs and speed and momentum are your best shot
candycoatedrazrbladz 3 months ago
@candycoatedrazrbladz doesn't speed and momentum give us a greater chance of breaking something though?

Thanks for the piece of information about grippy surfaces. Maybe I should look into a detroit locker.....

What are lockers and open diffs? Can anyone tell me where i can go to learn about off-roading an jeeps?
andrademeza 3 months ago
@andrademeza Just keep watching videos on youtube to learn about lockers. I could also explain the principle a little bit, if you'd like me to.

without lockers, you just gotta keep the weight on each tire as even as possible. ive seen open diffs do some pretty good climbs.

Should have spent that money on lockers instead of lift, wheels, and a tires.

Probably the most honest assessment of lockers I've seen on youtube.
yes, they can make obstacles easier. Automatic transmissions also make slow controlled climbs easier.
