Nope, definately 1989. This was from Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. This was maybe summer 89 after 'Lover In Me' album came out in late 1988. You can check my other videos, I have the rest of the appearance. She performs 'Lover In Me' and chats with Johnny.
@Heatstorm1 This performance was from 1989. I remember Sheena singing "The Lover in Me" and "I wouldn't beg for water" on this episode. By the way, Johnny retired from the Tonight Show in 1992.
Watch Regine Velasquez's version of this and see the difference between an amateur and a professional. RV is only a karaoke queen with limited depth. She can't touch Sheena, though I give her credit for trying. I never tire of this song. It'll be with me for the rest of my life--truly timeless. Thank you, Sheena!
Imagine a pop singer today trying to sing a song like this live on TV now. Of course they don't even try instead they lip sync some shitty dance number to cover up that they can't sing worth a shit. Sheena shows you can be sexy without be skanky and still have talent.
Yeah you hit the nail on the head there. Very few of todays singers could match this. I'll never understand why Sheena wasn't more popular here in the UK. She's versatile, can sing a whole range of songs and has a vocal range that Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Duffy and a lot of others can only wish for. And above all did it without the need for several stints into rehab. Respect.
Love Sheena. She was Celine before there was a Celine or Whitney or any of the pop belters. She was one of the first....and BEST. This was LIVE and she totally hit the money note like it was a piece of cake. Celine, Regine Velasquez and many others after her have covered her songs like You Could Have Been With Me, Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know and many others.
I'm only in my late 20's, but I somehow wish that songs of my generation are written with more meaning and heart like this one. This song is very beautiful.
i luv every song she's ever sang but what i love most about her is she sounds even better live!!! im a die hard fan and have been since 1980,i wish she would make a new album,i'd wait in line all nite to get it!!this song and almost over you have special meanings to me, i suggest if any fans haven't heard it yet listen, if any1 has ever had a broken heart they'll especially luv the words!
I love this song. I remember requesting this song back in either late 1982 or early 1983 on KOST 103.5 from my favorite DJ Jan Marie. It was so long ago. This and Wind beneath my wings were my top two favorite songs from Madness, Money and Music.
This performance just takes my breath away. I'm spellbound. Speechless with awe at the power of her voice. Her voice has mellowed here and her delivery here is far superior to the one you get on CD. You know what I like about her? She sings with power yet so much emotion. I just love her reading of this song... any song. OK, I'll stop gushing ;~p
Is there an interview after this song? If there was, could you please put it up?
Absolutely beautiful. My 2nd favorite song of hers (the first being Ice Out In The Rain). This song was kinda my theme for several years.... still is, in a way, I suppose. I've heard others cover this song, but only Sheena had the heart to sing it and make it stick.
I was going to a physically challenged camp and I lipsynced this song to a male counslor that I liked. We kept in touch for 4 years through mail and phone. Then he broke my heart and told me he was getting married. I was very young at the time. My camp days were so much fun. They are memories that I cherish.
Thanks for posting this! I used to have the CD, and this was one of my favs, beautiful music and lyrics. I really love that high note she hits toward the end. This gal can really sing!
Thank you for posting this! One of my faves from her (and to think that I did not feel warmly about this tune when it was released as a single--I thought it sounded "too submissive.")
Is this the interview where Carson commented on her looking like a "tuna caught in a net"?
Wow. She has an amazing voice.

This cannot be from 1989. Maybe 1999. She looks too old. In 88 she had the red hair happening and then the short hair for miami vice.
