My Dad was pioneer Army Air Corps flight mechanic "Smitty" Charlie Smith...and he and friends always had fun with planes. Later his hands made the gold foil you see on the Lunar Landing Module - Sky King captured our family in heartbeat! Clean and fresh and celebrating the triumph of flight and introducing the idea that anyone might learn to fly and own a plane. Neat! Thanks for this post!

Used to watch this every weekend when I was in 3rd and 4th grade. Reruns in the mid 60s. My father was a pilot and had flown the same airplanes as Sky King! So cool! A pilot and a cowboy; it doesn't get any cooler than that for a 10 year old.

It is said that "Sky King" inspired thousands of people to become airline pilots and even a few who became astronauts.

I think star Kirby Grant was killed in a car accident heading home from Cape Canaveral after seeing a space shuttle launch. He was invited by the commander of that shuttle mission to see the launch at the Cape's VIP area since as a youngster, the astronaut had seen "Sky King", and got interested in aviation and space as a result.

i just retired recently as a boeing 767 captain after a 35+ year flying career. my retirement flight was from honolulu, hi to newark, nj. it doesn't seem that long ago i'd get up early on saturday mornings to watch sky king and dream of some day being a pilot like sky. mr. kirby grant. i never got to thank you in person for lighting the fire of imagination under me. looking back now, it was you who inspired me to pursue my career. so thank you, mr. grant. godspeed and may god rest your soul.

of the shows instead of interrupting every 3 minutes like they do now. One reason I haven't watched

I use to watch Sky King when I was very young. His low passes were so cool to watch. I chose aviation as my career as a result of Sky. I got to meet him in person when I was sixteen. He autographed my first logbook.

Interesting article if you search Cessna 310B - this plane crashed six wks after filming in 1957, killing the pilot. A second 310 with altered tail # (to match the opening sequence) was flown thereafter & resold several times as the original plane!

@chkjns I remerber watching this show EVERY Saturday morning and if I'm not mistaken, the first few years the plane was different. It was a twin engine with two blade props and on the ground, it sat on it's tale, on a small wheel that steered the plane on the ground like a B-17 or DC-3. I met Kirby Grant once in the 70's and got an autographed picture and yes he was killed in a car crash in Florida.

i still miss those saturday mornings,my brother and i were both in grade school,they were the kind of shows where you d go back to school on monday and talk about on the bus and at lubch time and recess.we still talk alot about those times,so do most of the guys we went to school with,some might say we re trying to live in the past so be it,at least we have those great golden memories and i feel sorry for the kids of today that wont have them.

When "SKY KING" went into repeats (after eight years as a first-run syndicated program, originally for Derby Foods' "Peter Pan" peanut butter), National Biscuit Company {"Nabisco"} initially sponsored it on CBS every Saturday at 12 Noon (et)..and they continued right through 1966. Stan Sawyer is "The Voice Of Nabisco"...

@gotch09 You are absolutely correct! I did err. According to imb.com Internet Movie Database Sky King was on tv from 1951 - 1962. And Lorna Doone cookies can still be purchased at Walgreens!

@Carsonetric BTW, I live in Austin TX. Here in TX, we have s grocery chain called H E B. Anyway, when I ran into the neighborhood H E B the other, I, perchance went down the cookie and candy aisle. And I so happened to look down on one of the aisles, and what do you know, I saw a box of Lorna Doone cookies. It was just funny, I didn't even realize they were still sold, until you told me about Walgreens.
