Did Imogene last week in my XJ. I saw a lot of people doing this in Unlimiteds, so no reason a Cherokee wouldn't be fine as well. Next year I'll give it a shot after I work on my descending technique a little bit. I also tried the Governor shelf road and that scared the crap out of me! Imogene up from the Ouray side was way fun though.
So was the power station now private residence not pumping water up from those resevoirs? I suppose they were pumping it up for water in the house...not a manmade waterffall....lol.....seems like if its a natural waterfall on both sides of the house....eventually the house will erode away!!!
I loved the house on the cliffside too that was pumping water all the way from those resevoirs at the bottom just to have a man-made waterfall coming off both sides of their house!!
I was in telluride last weekend.....made it to the top in the 96 jeep laredo....way too many vehicles though for the holiday weekend and the film festival...literally about 50 4x4's on the telluride side of the pass....awesome trail though!! We just bought a house in montrose....i will be in telluride every weekend this winter for some snowboard action!! There was some asshole in a white older chevy that almost ran me and my wife off the road in one of the corners...
Jeepstergal, you are a real 4x4 Gal. I have done Black Bear only 2 times and won't push my luck again. My last time was in a big Isuzu Trooper and the brakes had failed. You know how I felt as I pulled up to the steps with only a hand brake working. The nightmares still come. Be safe and maybe we will cross trails some day. Adios from Austin Tx.
@whywidehide Wow, the brakes went out on the steps? Argh! My brakes went out on Cinnamon Pass, but I managed to make it back to Ouray for repair. Would love to run across you (not over you) on the trail. Be safe!
Love this trail, Been over it in a CJ7, Cj5, and a JK. Best was the first time, Saw 2 red foxes at the beginning of the final switch backs playing near that pond just before the water rolls off and down.
Hey JeepsterGal I have to say this is the first time I recall hearing your voice in one of your videos! Any way I was also there in July last year its sad I didn't know you were in that neck of the woods. Last time you and I talk like 2 years ago you said that you were looking to try it some day. Congrats on making it over and down safe. Its a real sight from up top and that turn after the steps is always a lot of fun for a full size!
@ckdunham Yes, I usually try to keep myself out of the videos. LOL. Sorry to hear we were both there at the same time and I didn't know it! I plan on going again with a Jeep tour driver driving so I can get better footage and not mess with being on the back of an SUV. It was a blast and I want to do it again in a regular sized vehicle.
Give me a break! There is no challenge on this road with a little atv!!!! I have doone this in my full size bronco thats a challenge. Despite the extremem switchbacks really trying to make this look challenging to an atv is pathetic
How did you get back over? I read the sherriffs website and map and was told that you can only go to the summit and then back to the hwy 550 side. black bear was only one way . ive gone to the summit and a little over and then back to 550. Can you go to Telluride side and have someone pick you up?
Used to be VERY beautiful up there ...before all the assholes on quads showed up and started treating it like a garbage dump and a highway. What used to be very serene and quiet mountain pass where you could get away from the bullshit of the city is now ridden with fucking jerks on motorcycles and quads.
Love your video! It really shows the road quite well. We were there at the end of June, but could only get about 1/2 way up on the 550 side, and up to the power station on the Telluride side. Coming back next year in July and hopefully it will be open all the way! I can't get it out my head!
@WahooWolfe The Forest Ranger told me not to do it in my Jeep Cherokee, which is a longer wheelbase than a Wrangler. I don't have a Wrangler. I figured he would know, so I listened :)
In the 2003 four wheeling season I got to be the first one up Black Bear! I followed some crazy cook in the bulldozer that was clearing the remaining snow off. I think he was surprised to see us pull in as he was parking his dozer, and said "if y'all get stuck I got the right to move ya anyway I want!" lol. Made it up to the summit from the 550 side, the other side still had too much snow even to doze it open. Was still beautiful though, especially being the first one that year.
You've really outdone yourself on this one! Absolutely fabulous! It sure brought back memories. I'd like to try an ATV some time, but I think I'd still want to stick with a dirt bike on Black Bear! Now I want to do Black Bear again.
@r4h9s Well, if I had been driving the ATV it would have been more fun, I think, but I've never driven one so was happy to have a driver and wouldn't have been able to do as much photography had I been driving. It's just that I was very preoccupied with trying to hold on! Lol. But overall, yeah, the ATV was more fun. You're closer to the action, more part of the experience than you are in a Jeep, I think. I would love to do it again!
Ya that looks way cool. I have done pearl pass a few times and I have done several of the shorter but more difficult OHV trails.. Black Bear Pass is soon on my list..
@DRUMMR69 I know, right? Forest Service Ranger advised me against doing it in my stock Jeep, even though I've seen bigger vehicles come down off that road...since I'd never done it before, I listened to him and went with ATVs instead...
This looks like one more ride I am surprised how steady you kept the camera . what a beautiful area .Be careful girl whose idea was this too much for me ): Great video*****
@murcster1 Ha, thanks. We strapped the camera on with tie downs and it stayed on like a champ! I've been wanting to do Black Bear a long time and was geared up for it this trip; was planning on driving the Jeep until a Forest Ranger advised me NOT to drive it in my Jeep. LOL. So we switched to ATVs. It was a blast!

@houstonfire62 Yes, we had a truck and trailer waiting on us in Telluride. You can't ride the ATVs through town to get anywhere else.

what kind of atv are you riding? and for the trails there and taylor park would you recommend bighorn 2.0 or baja cross for a renegade
