Not entirely correct, the SLK is the only roadster (except for the SLS) that can be called sporty, that is some rare thing about Mercedes, and if you have driven one, you'll change your mind about it. It ain't some SL wannabe, it's in fact delivered with a detuned engine that belongs in the SL, which makes it as quick as an SL. Further to my comment below, the only thing that would limit an SL65 AMG's top speed (limiter removed) would be its tyres which are rated to 186mph (300kph).
A car with over 600bhp should break the 200mph barrier if meets the following criteria:
- Weighs less than 2.5 tonnes;
- Has a decent coefficient of drag;
- And finally, has fairly tall gearing (minimum 30mph per 1000rpm).
All German cars are limited to 155mph (250kph). Concerning the SL65 AMG, you can ask AMG to alter the restriction to 186mph (300kph) but one has to do a driving course to satisfy their requirements. If you choose the aftermarket route (invalidate the warranty), 340kph (212mph) is entirely feasible. The car has 612bhp, 738lb ft of torque and a decent coefficient drag factor of 0.31.
In fact, Autocar (UK) managed 202mph (limiter removed) in an SL55AMG in 2003 so 212 is likely for the 65.
