This game used to frustrate the hell out of me when I first started playing because I used to always have trouble getting my flying my jets out of the base. And sometime I'd only get a couple out and had to play with just 2 lives. I eventually got the hang of it though and had lots of fun playing.
That damn Helicopter - hated that thing. Don't forget about the other levels too. There is an attack on the Kremlin ( I think) with the grenade launcher and then there is this robot thing that uses something like the tron deadly disc. Ahhh fond memories of cracked software.
Is it better today when you get the whole book to the game to play like Baldur's Gate, etc... Ha, ha, ha it is funny to read we all had the same problems with video games. We were so young and. I had problems with this game too and with hangar but I gave up soon. But I always wanted to learn to play ACE 2 and ACE and never learned to land and tried every now and then. We mostly had illegal copies I believe and they didn't came with instructions. Battle Ships and The great gianna sisters my no.1s
This game frustrated me so much when I was a kid! I couldn't figure out how to open the door! Then when I did it just sent me back to the same room. I thought I was doing something wrong, but it was just going to the next plane! I was so young I couldn't figure it out though! Man the game moved so slow too!
Hehe, for me the adventures in PC gaming begun in 1987 or perhaps in was 1988. It was a long way from there to Crysis 2 today.
We had Atari 8-bit computers then, performance very similar to Commodore 64.
Raid over Moscow was one of my favorites because we lived on the BOLSHEVIK side of the Iron Curtain. This made the destruction of Moscow and Red Square even more exciting, like the ultimate mischief. It was politically incorrect in the extreme.
I remember this game well... when I was in HS used to play it alot along with the 2 beach head games.... This had to be one of very best c64 games ever imo next to FORCE 7 imo =)
sidenote: if you pause it alot after the discs when the plane flys away from island you can make it fly off the screen =)
what about the throwing knife fight at the end, with the Yank and the Rusky standing like on those dock pillars? LOL The flying sequences took the scale and dimension of what Zaxxon tried to be, and made it better.
Oh yeah, sticking it to the Commie menace (be it Red Square or Red China) never gets old!
Interesting that the game maker's take on near future aircraft (namely the player's plane) resembles the YF-23. Given that jet engines don't operate outside atmospheres, the player's planes probably have either rockets or RAMJET engines.
Tech stuff aside, one wonders why they didn't install a catapult mechanism or something similar to launch the fighters. Took me three tries just to get out the doors!
A true classic and awesome gameplay....of course, the whole idea that destroying the launch sites would stop ICBMs in flight is bogus. But who cares, it's still cool.
oh my god this is wonderful! i was 11 when this came out...i couldnt afford a 64 but my freind had one..i had a TI back then...this game was so cool and in its time it WAS the shit...i wish the 3 big console companies now wopuld bring this stuff back on a disk 64 and texas instruments vintage games..yeah it make look old BUT we had to go there befire we got to this point..comparing it to ace combat or something we have come SO far! thanks!
Oddly enough, this is my favorite game of all time. Xbox 360, wii, whatever else... I somehow love this game above all else. I'd love to know what became of the game developers. Anyone know? I never managed to beat the game. Got to the reactor, but never past that stage. Time to fire up an emulator...
As n3xvs23 said hit F5 but make sure your at a decent altitude first(not too high that you hit the celing or the top of the bay doors but not too low) or else they wont open
@CoreyD1086 i thought it was f7.. but you had to gain altitude at same time i think.. took us a while as kids to figure it out.. damn fine game though. im 33 in texas and the commo was one of our prized things to pass time fun.. the whole neighborhood
@CoreyD1086 I remember my dad brought a copy of this game home, sans-instructions when I was 8. We played this game over and over and over, just floating around the hanger, with no clue what was supposed to trigger the door. I remember finally, after about a month, i started systematically hitting each button on the keyboard, and we figured out the F5 key opened the door. It was a revelation, and suddenly we had a WHOLE other game! :P
Sitting up until 2AM, last guy remaining, one disc left... into the machine of death, saving the world with sweaty palms and adrenaline all run out.... priceless.
God, this game brings back memories. Thanks for jogging them!
i recall playing this on the spectrum 128k, I used to get to the reactor final section but never managed to destroy the robot in time with the rebounding disc explosives.
And, after seeing the other versions, I can honestly say that the C64 version kicks serious ass. The other versions (Atari, ZX Spec., etc.) don't compare, especially with sound.
probably the socond c64 game to be doomed in germeny.

I never played this, but the graphics really remind me of Blue Max, especially the 'explosion' effect, when you hit something.
