I just have 2 watch this over and over 2 lift my spirits. The divine Ms. Franklin had an excellent audience which really brought out the best in her performance. She's always wonderful, but when U have the right audience, the performance only gets better. It's been my experience that African-American or Hebrew performers desire and need good audience PARTICIPATION. That's definitely here especially with the blonde dancing down the aisle near a producer(?)/European-looking guy.
Man she is the queen of soul. She sure felt this performance right and that drummer is doing her a favour. Keepin up the beat man i would hire him for all concerts. But all in all he was just a background, her voice and feeling are the combination that is makin her the queen of soul. Well done. Supreme!
I love watching her footwork around the 1:23 mark. Aretha Franklin was feeling this performance!
Amazing performer back in her days. I love watching the older singers performances from back in the days. Think you had it all listening to the Mariah's, and such, but you miss out big time not educating yourself on how people such as Aretha Franklin, or Marvin Gaye, etc. ruled the stage so naturally back then without all the extra props artists have these days.
@theshore465 It's not for everyone, but for those with a very high spirit. You might find Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" here on YouTube more to your liking.
Wow! Aretha was soo energetic on this performance. She had that audience going crazy. I have never had the pleasure of seeing her in person because she didn't travel to widespread because of her fear of flying. I would have loved to have had the memory of seeing her live.
To quote Pinhead in the "Hellraiser' series Aretha "waylaid the ramparts" on this version she and her band is totally smoking and playing in another dimension. If there is another version of her singing "RESPECT" better I want to see it because she has that auidence on the edge of their seats.
I first heard Aretha while on my 9th grade class trip the song was Respect and every since them I was a fan for life. I song in a band in the 70's and I thought I was Aretha I was good but nobody does it like Aretha.
I love this vid however, this is absolutely NOT the best rendition of Respect she has done. All of yall need to check out the Live at Fillmore west album. THAT is the best rendition that she did. Aretha laid that rendition out to dry, do you children here me? Don't get me twisted, I love Aretha like all of you, and this is cute, but the Live at filmore west rendition is Low Down (good). You've got to here it. If you haven't, your missing a typhoon of a performance. Love.
this is unusual. I've always had the impression that Aretha doesn't much care for performing. In this footage, she still isn't really relating to the audience but she is singing for all she's worth and that's enough. hopefully, a future biographer will find out what happened this night to bring this kind of singing out of her. must have been something intense.
@vinvid2u I'm not sure where you got that from. Aretha has said many times before that t"here is nothing like being on stage and connecting with the audience."
I got this impression from watching her early performances and seeing her in person a few times. She has changed quite a bit over the years. My comment really pertains to the young Aretha we're viewing in this footage. Not the mature queen we would see today.
@trentnjones I remember seeing her in my 30's in the 1990's and seeing young Girls who were in High School or College and I was blown away by how much they enjoyed her music and to think that they weren't even born when she released songs like Respect. She will always be The Queen.
Just think I read a review that tired to compare Beyonce's "Single Ladies" to Aretha's "Respect". Clearly the review did not think about what impact "Respect" had on music! People are still singing this song 40yrs later.
I can't even begin to think what it must have been like to witness that performance. I mean, I am sitting here watching it, and chills really are going up and down my spine. To be there live? I guess I would have passed out. I have yet come across someone with that much church and passion embedded in their voice. You can tell she was the ONE right here. She can still sing for me any day of the week!
This was when The Music Magazine Cashbox rewarded her with various Top Awards from Soul Female Singer Of The Year, R & B Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year.
I cannot tell you how much i appreciate you posting this wonderful spectacular footage of aretha in her Hey DAY IN CONCERT live! This was the Aretha i grew up listening to and I love dearly. I have more to say to you in another comment so stay tuned. Somebody on here said that this was the best respect in their opinion. I love this, however, the respect she did Live at Filmore west blew this out of the ocean.
determination: my brothers and i were in the kitchen when this came on, my oldest brother said , wow, who is this! my other brother said, why that's the queen of soul! aretha franklin. this song will never grow old, and it feels energized as much now as back then.
Whitney was born in August of 1963 so she was either 4 or 5 years old when her Godmother sang here.

There's only " 2 " Artists I have ever heard put out such OOZING EXCITEMENT.
Aretha with her voice & Hendrix on guitar. Something indescribable about it.
A RARE talent, then & now. Both were, & still are, unmatched!!!!!
