  • my teacher let us hear it for our Harlem Renaissance project . love it . ♥

  • It is a shame that someone would offer such a strong bias opinion about these two wonderful artist and the work that they have done with this song. As a person who appreciates all kinds of music, I think I would hold my thoughts and opinions about an artist and their work if I am not familiar with their work. It would make me seem uneducated about the subject and closed minded to offer an opinion that has no real basis.

  • These two artist are some of the most influential artist in hip hop entertainment. Who they are as artist and as leaders in the community speaks volumes to their character and the music they present has more class and substance than many many many of the artist in the industry. Some of these comments are obviously from someone who does not have a clue what these two artist stand for and the type of music they put out.

  • Strange Fruit was written by a white southern school teacher originally published as a poem her name was Abel Meeropol, so that ends that discussion.

  • @arsongrady awkward. Abel Meeropol was a man. And he taught in New York City.

  • Nina Simone is probably rolling in her grave over this nonsensical sample they did

  • @XforeverlongingX nina simone didnt write strange fruit and it has been performed by numerous artists so I dont see how your comment is relevant. The song was originally published in poem format by a white southern school teacher named Abel Meeropol. And I believe billie holiday performed it as a song first.

  • @XforeverlongingX Nina Simone wasn't even the one who made this song famous. Chill out.

  • Definitely one of the best Common songs i have ever heard - thats for sure

  • This song is like an update on race relations in the U.S.

  • de la bombe atomique!!!

  • Truth is songs like this has meaning. Many people in todays era only listen to all of this blah and non sense. Let this song get released now and watch it gets ignored its to much for people to understand. My friend to me made a point I did not agree, but he said todays kids and young adults dont listen to lyrics anymore its all about ignorant hooks and dance music. I dislike todays music has no meaning anymore, but I respect those who still listen to music like this meaning you have a brain

  • @iTsGoOdMuSiC Not everyone can understand what common says. I mean, he is probably the most philosophical rapper around, if ever. Too bad his words are wasted on those who would rather be ignorant

  • @InsanityIsI Lol, your comment is laughable. This is garbage. It is a rape of the original and makes all that blacks fought for seem for naught. It's stupidity and I'm sure Nina and all of the other ARTISTS would hate this.

  • @XforeverlongingX And who are you to say what an artist would like and hate? While it may be your opinion that it's garbage, i will still view it as a piece of work. It's laughable for you to go around interjecting that it would be hated by Nina.

  • @InsanityIsI Why is that laughable? it's highly probable that Nina would despise this garbage. It's completely deleterious to all that she struggled to achieve as an activist, as she was, with her music. If anybody thinks this is a piece of intelligent or productive artwork, they need to have their head checked

  • @XforeverlongingX Just because you don't like hip hop does not mean another artists would despise being honored by having some of the best and most conscious rappers sample her. This is a great song by the way great message Nina would be proud to see these young black men still care about where their ppl came from and where their going.

  • @InsanityIsI And I said I'm sure, I did not say she would hate it. I said I'm sure she would. That means I believe she would, given what she did with her own life. Based on the evidence, my dear.

  • @XforeverlongingX - I completely disagree I believe that Nina would be honored that young artist are still paying homage and keeping our history alive. When children hear this type of music not only do they become inspired, but they go digging in the crates to find the originals....Or if they ever came across the song in passing it will be familiar to them, which will make them LISTEN. I don't think she would want her MESSAGE to be lost in history.

  • @XforeverlongingX ya, they would hate a positive message being brought back to life for the younger generation to hear and think about

  • sometimes stuff like this doesnt get released because of sample clearance issues. sure common and kanye knew they made a hit but they knew theyd get sued to put it on an album. but maybe im wrong

  • wow he just messed up this song it doesnt hold any of the meaning it did when Billie Holiday sung it in my opinion...smh

  • how does this sound like a happy song @ixi974 (btw Rush G, IGD 974, 3rd Foot.) Nina Simone is singing about black bodies, strange fruit, hanging from trees. Check out the pictures of little smiling white children standing under recently hanged young black children

  • Hi! Cool music) <3)))

  • Yet again, this emotion-less genre ruins another good song.

  • it makes thing song sound like a happy song this song wasnt meant to have a beat ur wrecking the meaning billie holiday all the way

  • Nina

  • anyone know if that's Nina?

  • @androydnyc Billie Holiday...

  • @androydnyc it's Billie Holiday

  • It's Billie Holiday. The sample is from her song Strange fruit released in 1939

  • @luvlylibra924 Actually, this is Nina Simone's version. Either way, both versions are great interpretations and Kanye put it down.

  • @androydnyc NINA.

  • The dummies look like Charlies Angels.

  • Still wondering how the fuck did this get held back

  • If I Ruled The World ???

  • nothin like good music....love it.

  • NICE

  • @GraditudevsRevenge it isnt a disgrace to billie holiday because if u listen to the lyrics its still keeps the message that she tryd to spread to the world if any thing it does it justice by keeping her message going and letting the younger generation MY generation who havent heard the original song learn some musical history and history abt heir past so shut ur ignorant ass up!!!

  • @dahiphopkid1 ...... only if the younger generation makes the effort to understand the history of the song rather than just worry about the beat or the rap.....

  • @dahiphopkid1 And you know that these dummies aren't listening to the lyrics, they just pay attention to the beat, just look at zigilo444's comment.

  • peepee

  • @GraditudevsRevenge and the world goes on so SHUT UP kmt

  • @supakeiiz well said....

  • The version with Cassidy is hot too

  • Sorry the voice on this track is Nina Simone not Billie Holiday she does have a rendition of the same song but this is Nina

  • common iz my niggz....but i like cassidy version better. im jus sayin...

  • I fuckin love nina simone and i don't know how I feel about everybody sampling her I like the songs but something hmmm

  • @smile678 Well since this is not Nina Simone's song, you have nothing to worry about. It is a poem written by Abel Meeropol. It's been performed by countless artists and if it belongs to anyone, that would be Billie Holiday

  • you guys gotta hear strange fruit by billie holiday. Its terribly sad but so beautiful.

  • This song is the shit.

  • This sounds like Damian Marley and Naz should have done it! Very impressive.

  • ---> wikipedia ---> strange fruit

  • How could you mutilate an incredible standard like this one?!

  • Totally fucked up a beautiful song....

  • no exaggeration- one of the best common songs ive ever heard. top 10 for sure for him. dont wanna generalize but this song just fits him as a conscious rapper. a black man. great song all over, from kanyes work on the boards, to john legends refrain, to the dope guitar playing at the end and throughout. keep that real hip hop alive. we need it. we need a message in the music. real talk.

  • where can i find the lyrics to that song?

  • Where the hell can i get the instrumental!?!

I've tried googling Common - Strange Fruit Instrumental

    I've tried Cassidy - Celebrate...But nothing! :(

  • Fuckin awesome. Simple as that. Leg end.

  • same beat cassidy used on his track celebrate and tht came out like a year ago

  • Yeah, but this version is used by a much more fluid poet.

  • grammy family

  • Uhh...this is an amazing beat. Damn why didn't this get released?

  • @yewtoobdewd it didnt get released because the three of them couldnt agree which album they wanted to put it on

  • @JdStaNLeY23 How does that all work out? I've seen many instances where multiple artists that appear on a track each put it on their own album. Why wouldn't that be the case here? Clue me in please.

  • nice

  • hope he'll never go UMC again.

  • I dont get it why you're getting thumbs down for that comment.

Common is a beast on the mic and spits real shit at the same time. And UMC was okay for a mediocre/main-stream hiphop album but his albums 'Be' and 'Finding Forever' are on a way higher lever. thumbs up to you.

  • nah they aint thumbs down, their green, check out all the thumbs downs the smart ass with no comment has
