the transformation of songs as they forded the atlantic is truly astounding... the intricate vocal trillings morph into slides... the lyrics themselves lose detail... the

hornpipes and reels survived the crossing, but jigs were lost at sea... i played all

the spooky mountain tunes in the '60's but you could have knocked me over with

a feather when i started hearing the british isle versions from fairport and the like... the irish racing pony skewbald transformed to 'stewball'!!!
