  • This man is a legend.. well loved and respected. Great footage!

  • Watch at 7:24 Those 2 young guys step back from fear as Fred just stands his ground.

    Fred was the Man !!

  • Absolute legend, absolute hero. Will never forget him.

  • I remember this as a kid and thinking how the hell did you knock a chimney down with some wood and fire. My dad explained it to me (Lego being a useful toy, even without the fire!)

Someone who knew his way around a spanner and a Birmingham screwdriver (hammer)

All sitting around the TV to watch this i can almost smell the egg and chips ... just a pity he wasn't with us longer.

Lets hope they dont stick his traction engine in a bloody museum. It was made and reborn to be used.

  • love how they are smoking

  • Chimney enthusiasts.

    Okay.

  • That Boltonian accent is gorgeously rich; it must have been especially so when it was a novelty to have regional accents talking with authority on national television.

  • WHAT A MAN!! best entertainment on TV past present and future and he also oooozed a pure passion for what he spoke of on TV as well. They just dont make um like our Fred anymore do they YOU NO!!

  • even the kids loved him......as a demo lad i brought my daughter up to respect fred

  • Brilliant.

  • Legend

  • fair guy lol

  • i think this guy will be remembered forever true legand and character i miss him everyday love you fred

  • He is a legend and always will be in the eyes of us Boltonians. He was indeed our local hero when I was a nipper! A proper bloke who was the best at what he did. It makes me sad that we won't see any more Freds in the future because of the "Elf and Safety" brigade. God bless you Fred and thank you!

  • LEGEND!

  • Ithink they key to this lovely man's identity is that he'd much rather have been building them instead of knocking them down.

  • Brilliant, Wouldn't be allowed to burn tractor tyres like that now! What a great bloke. See how all the kids saw him as their local hero!

  • Seems a policeman must have leant Fred that whistle.

  • 2 people want this to be directed by Michael Bay.

  • classic Bolton accent, apparently this was the liverpool accent till the irish and welsh influx in the mid 1800s, class.........no high vis jackets in sight ,absolute legend ,RIP Fred..sadly missed....Harry Holdings would've been proud.

  • Ha I've never heard of this guy before. He's brilliant. A real man!

  • What a Legend, Fred Dibnah was a proper man. Not like most of the cowboys these days. Who have to wear Safety equipment like harnesses. Its incredible how much hard work he did. 'Light this bloody rag love' lol. Creases me up that does

  • cop the village idiot next to fred at 3:14, classic only fools and horses, just like trigger lol

  • @padster67 ..haha well spotted

  • I heard Al Gore was made of wood !

  • burning tyres lol how times haved changed

  • who needs health and safety! Fred dont!

  • 3:13 Fred, the Police man and some strange guy looking at their watches. I love that!!! Its like Mr Benn!!

  • RIP

  • Just strolls off with a fag hanging out his mouth "it's goin" the other two get a bit more of a move on!

Do they allow this now? Imagine it! Health and Safety would have a 10-mile safety zone, everyone with hi-viz jackets and hard hats and oh have you done a risk assessment lasting 3 days? coupled with an assessment of the emmisions from the smoke on the planets C02 levels blah blah.

Just light a bloody rag and throw some petrol on it! Bloody great them days - the systems' gone tits up!

  • @MOLMENTUS I could not agree more. This man was a legend. the health and safety lot would be having fits if one tried to do this today

  • Fred's been seen in Longridge lately....they likes a drink does Longridge folk.

  • Strange that he was best-known for the part of his job he enjoyed least.

  • flat caps and woodbines....

  • sadly missed, one of the greats, r.i.p fred!

  • Classic Fred, greatly missed .

  • This was the first time I saw Fred on tele . Still one of my favourite Dibnah clips .

  • This was the first time I saw Fred on TV.... Still one of my favourite Dibnah clips.

  • Is that chimney at the side of the M62 (Milnrow - Oldham Junctions) still stood?

  • @bluebus270 Yup I think it is

  • Health and Safety would have a field day with that in 2010. The Good Old Days! Always the best.....

  • 100%

  • RIP!!

  • ROCK N ROLL!!

  • did you like that

  • bloody good fire wernt it

  • squr uns always wanna go like squr ways

    :o)

    RIP Fred.

  • Could you imagine all that happening today, kids everywhere, a couple of coppers, a big crowd and a massive fire, bloody brilliant...!!! How the hell did we go from this to what we see everywhere today in terms of Hi viz and a hard hat, and thats just to sharpen a pencil.... Where and when did it all go wrong?? The worlds gone mad. :-)

  • Did you see the film of him dealing with a tower in the same manner?

It was part of a mill or offices with the stairwell.

for some reason Fred was called to deal with it.

    I don't know why.

  • People like Fread should run the country

Down to earth basic solid values.

    Thanks for posting this

  • Such a hero.

  • Ho the days before hard hats and anoying yellow vests.

  • On field work we have to wear them for rock exposures and quarries and the likes. I wonder what 5mm of plastic and day glow green does to 3 tonne of rock... whatever it does i'm sure i wont be around to find out what happened!

  • flat cap, pack of woodies, demolish a 200 ton chimney then down the pub for a few pints of bitter.they don´t make them like fred anymore.also much entertaining than using explosives.

  • The man was a one off. The last Victorian.

    "Did yer like that?"

  • to think there usted to be hundreds of chimneys puffing out thick black smoke like that all day and night.
