That would be great the sooner the better. They will be better mannered and can be held alot easier. Remember also, do NOT use Tap Water for them. Distilled Water is alot safer. I use a glass pyrex cake pan for her to swim in for now, till I get the new enclosure built. Enjoy!!
I don't understand this whole tap water fear thing. It's not just wiht my pets either. Everywhere I go I hear people tell me, don't drink the tap water, it is nasty and could give you SIDA and SARS and AIDS. But it never does. And it never hurts my pets. I'm not trying to be an ass, I just don't get it. If jungle puddles are good enough in nature, how come tap water is so dangerous?
but for your tap water question... there is so much shit in it,lit. if you look in a glass of water, there are little particles of what looks like "dust". its actualy TP, tampons, and other stuff that is small enough to fit through the filters at the plants. some places (here in cali) they distinguish recycled water from natural water, but others done (where my mom lives in alabama.) ive drinkin tap from both places and are fine, but some people freak out about it.

I found this bumper sticker at a gun show that says "PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals" I just don't get the whole animal rights activism thing. I'm not cruel or anything, I just don't understand why we should go out of our way to give animals perfect living situations. Lets all focus on people, because people matter more. Animals are put here to look cool and taste good.
I actually have another tank which I could feed him in, but I was instructed by the previous owner not to handle him for three days after eating, so I usually just go with his normal tank. Also, I live in North Carolina, so it's almost always hot and humid here, and we don't turn on any central air until it's unbearable. Honestly, animals are much more resilient than the people who write pet care books give them credit for. How big is yours?
Oo, I meant if you take him out to feed him so that he wouldn't swallow some aspen along with the rat. Then after he's swallowed put him back. Or you can lay out newspaper when you feed. I don't think it matters much anyway because wild snakes swallow dirt and rocks all the time.
My snakes only about 8months so it's around 25inches.
Cool man. I wish I had had mine since it was little. It was raised by someone else and given to me not long before this video was filmed. The previous owner didn't really get him acustomed to being handled much, so he's fiesty, but I sort of like him better with the imminent threat of a bite.
He's somewhere between six and seven feet I think. Unfortunately the tank is only four' by two'. (no idea how many gallons that is) I can't afford to buy him a better tank, those things are like gold! I'd like to build him a bigger tank with wood and plexiglass, but I have to solve some serious space issues first.
I don't think Boas can eat people. They only grow to fifteen feet or so. Anacondas have been known to eat people, but they have to grow very large to swallow prey our size. I would say twenty five to thirty feet.
Also, feeding pre-killed makes it easier to feed him outside his cage in a box, so he doesn't associate movement inside his cage with food. I learned the hard way that you shouldn't feed your snake inside its cage, which I used to do, too. After he grabbed my hand once (causing nerve damage to one of my fingers) and constricted my arm in an attempt to eat me when I reached into his cage to pick him up, I never fed him inside his cage again. ;)
My snake has already been bit, which only made the gladiotr stadium of my bedroom that much cooler. More violence = more entertainment. I don't believe any snake could actually die from a rat bite, screw that. But an injury would be cool. And I can't wait till my snake bites the crap out of me, I want an awesome scar. If he bites me all wimpy and doesn't hurt me, I'll go rub up on a rat and stick my hand back in till he takes out some serious blood.
I have a RTB too, mine's a six-footer! :) I feed mine pre-killed (frozen/thawed) rats, though. It's safer for him (zero risk of rat bites!), more convenient for me (just grab a rat outta the freezer when I need one, and put it in some hot water to thaw for a few hours), AND a heck of a lot cheaper (if you buy in bulk). I buy them from companies that euthanise with CO2, so the rats die peacefully instead of in absolute terror. Sure, my snake has to eat, but this way his food doesn't suffer!
Probably already been mentioned but... you shouldnt feed live and you shouldnt feed over the aspen (or whatever substrate that is)...youll regret either when your snake gets a)bitten or b)impacted...

I had to google what a budgie is, but I don't think hardly any pets are uncool. Unless you dress yours up and stow it in your purse. Birds can rock just as hard as anything else. Except cobra's, my friend has some cobra's and they rock the hardest.

last post did not go through: I have a 3year old Columbian Redtail about 4-6ft (never really measured. Got when he was a baby. Fed him live to start him off to make sure he was healthy. All redtails have an aggressive feeding response. Really easy to switch over. Mine will get aggressive only at feed time. He eats 1 large and 1 medium every 7-8 days. Any longer and he gets fussy.
I've got alot more sympathy for rats than I do for snakes, but that's because I'm scared of snakes. I've heard too many stories about people getting bit not to be. Nomatter how tame the snake is. I'm just saying.. I mean the video is educational and all, and I realise that it's a part of life and it happens in the wild every day, but god.. That rat could've been someone's pet too.. Just like your snake is. Idk. Not hating or anything. Just pissing and moaning.
I realize snakes aren't good pets for everyone, but i really like him, and having already been raised on live feeders, I doubt he would even eat a prekilled rat. The only other things he would eat are similarly sized pets, and feeder rats are cheapest. But honestly, the only exciting thing he really does is eat live rats, so prekilled would just be boring.
And I'm sure he'll bite me eventually, but having him as a pet is cool enough to get bitten every now and then. Sort of like having a tattoo or a woman, well worth the pain.

And what does live feeding have to do with caring about babies? Unless the reptiles roam the house of their own volition, the babies should be safe either way.

I was just referring to, with the not consuming your corpses comment, that I don't eat meat and I am an animal rights activist. Nonetheless, I take incredible care of my snakes. I'm not a lunatic, I just want change. I don't know what makes animal rights instantly associated with PETA or anything of the sort.
Everyone knows feeding their herps live prey is a huge risk.

That's cool. I don't really have a problem with normal animal rights people, just the psycho extremist ones. And for me, the danger is what makes the feeding so cool. It's raw nature. I know the risk, he's been bit before, but honestly I root for the best man to win. If the snake can't handle a couple of rats, then what good is he?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. Do you still feed him inside the tank? Its not good since you run the risk of him/her swallowing the aspen.
Don't you have trouble keeping temps and humidity right in an aquarium?

I actually have another tank which I could feed him in, but I was instructed by the previous owner not to handle him for three days after eating, so I usually just go with his normal tank. Also, I live in North Carolina, so it's almost always hot and humid here, and we don't turn on any central air until it's unbearable. Honestly, animals are much more resilient than the people who write pet care books give them credit for. How big is yours?

Oo, I meant if you take him out to feed him so that he wouldn't swallow some aspen along with the rat. Then after he's swallowed put him back. Or you can lay out newspaper when you feed. I don't think it matters much anyway because wild snakes swallow dirt and rocks all the time.
My snakes only about 8months so it's around 25inches.

Cool man. I wish I had had mine since it was little. It was raised by someone else and given to me not long before this video was filmed. The previous owner didn't really get him acustomed to being handled much, so he's fiesty, but I sort of like him better with the imminent threat of a bite.

Just make sure you handle him somewhat frequently, maybe he'll calm down a little? lol
And if you handle him frequently, he won't automatically think you're going to feed him when you have your hand in the tank.
Have you gotten striked at? I heard it hurts lol.
How big is your Boa now and the enclosure? As long as its 55gal or above then it should be find for him.
Mine is currently eating small mice/fuzzy rats.

He's somewhere between six and seven feet I think. Unfortunately the tank is only four' by two'. (no idea how many gallons that is) I can't afford to buy him a better tank, those things are like gold! I'd like to build him a bigger tank with wood and plexiglass, but I have to solve some serious space issues first.

I don't think Boas can eat people. They only grow to fifteen feet or so. Anacondas have been known to eat people, but they have to grow very large to swallow prey our size. I would say twenty five to thirty feet.

Also, feeding pre-killed makes it easier to feed him outside his cage in a box, so he doesn't associate movement inside his cage with food. I learned the hard way that you shouldn't feed your snake inside its cage, which I used to do, too. After he grabbed my hand once (causing nerve damage to one of my fingers) and constricted my arm in an attempt to eat me when I reached into his cage to pick him up, I never fed him inside his cage again. ;)

My snake has already been bit, which only made the gladiotr stadium of my bedroom that much cooler. More violence = more entertainment. I don't believe any snake could actually die from a rat bite, screw that. But an injury would be cool. And I can't wait till my snake bites the crap out of me, I want an awesome scar. If he bites me all wimpy and doesn't hurt me, I'll go rub up on a rat and stick my hand back in till he takes out some serious blood.

I have a RTB too, mine's a six-footer! :) I feed mine pre-killed (frozen/thawed) rats, though. It's safer for him (zero risk of rat bites!), more convenient for me (just grab a rat outta the freezer when I need one, and put it in some hot water to thaw for a few hours), AND a heck of a lot cheaper (if you buy in bulk). I buy them from companies that euthanise with CO2, so the rats die peacefully instead of in absolute terror. Sure, my snake has to eat, but this way his food doesn't suffer!

(just like children, minus the killing) And I never understood the whole no-feeding-on-aspen rule. How could boas exist if they can't eat safely on ground litter? I had to google what a budgie is, but I don't think hardly any pets are uncool. Unless you dress yours up and stow it in your purse. Birds can rock just as hard as anything else. Except cobra's, my friend has some cobra's and they rock the hardest.
And he hasn't bitten me ... yet! I'm sure he will eventually, that's just part of the deal. He's not big enough to kill me, so I don't mind.

last post did not go through: I have a 3year old Columbian Redtail about 4-6ft (never really measured. Got when he was a baby. Fed him live to start him off to make sure he was healthy. All redtails have an aggressive feeding response. Really easy to switch over. Mine will get aggressive only at feed time. He eats 1 large and 1 medium every 7-8 days. Any longer and he gets fussy.

I've got alot more sympathy for rats than I do for snakes, but that's because I'm scared of snakes. I've heard too many stories about people getting bit not to be. Nomatter how tame the snake is. I'm just saying.. I mean the video is educational and all, and I realise that it's a part of life and it happens in the wild every day, but god.. That rat could've been someone's pet too.. I realize snakes aren't good pets for everyone, but i really like him, and having already been raised on live feeders, I doubt he would even eat a prekilled rat. The only other things he would eat are similarly sized pets, and feeder rats are cheapest. But honestly, the only exciting thing he really does is eat live rats, so prekilled would just be boring.

Hell yeah, I couldn't even follow with the camera. I learned to just follow the rat, and then I can't miss the attack. Another month or so and I should have enough feeding footage to make a longer montage of rat death. If I can still find all the clips!

Won't that allow the bacteria from all his waste to build up and cause infections or sickness or something? I thought it was really important to keep it clean so he would stay healthy. If you know of any way to kill the germs without using potentially harmful chemicals, let me know. I was worried about the windex being harmful, but thought the benefits outweighed the risks.

I'm not sure. My friend in pest control is an animal freak, and had to get rid of him when his woman started whining too much. So I got the snake and tank for free. I've only had him since about last May. Five or six months I guess. What do you have? A red tail as well? Whatever it is I would love to see a video of it. Yeah, I'm in the process of replacing the stuff in the cage, so it's a little bare right now. He actually needs a bigger cage too, but those things are so expensive I can't afford one at the time. I'm thinking about building one out of plexiglass to save money, we'll see.
Expect more of me now that I have my camera, and I've figured out how to work around all the kinks in my equiptment/software.
