Well of course it works..but why should we have to perform these endless 'workarounds'.
No pro can work with this, too much missing, so many keyboard strokes and mouse operations . Slow and archaic. Pros use programable edit controllers. I have not used JKL/I/O keyboard taps or drop down menus for years. But hey, typically British not to complain, that's why they get poor service and awful food.
BTW QT has had a px aspect ratio bug for some time, depends on the native file, DVCPRO, HDV etc.
@byt4byt Well I didn't say I wasn't complaining. I actually like FCPX but agree there is still a lot that needs to be addressed, just thought I would share this workaround for now. Oh, hey, believe it or not I also agree about poor service and awful food but we British people complain in a different way - they just don't go again! Hence why our economy is rubbish right now. Only the places with good service and food will eventually survive.
This tutorial is worthless! FCP does NOT send the proper information for iDVD to recognize for maintaining 16:9 aspect ratio. If your project is in 4:3 you're ok, although 4:3 is Dead. Solution - Learn compressor and DVD Studio Pro. You can not only author your DVD but you can ADD your chapter markers there and skip the GarageBand step.
Hello again - were you able to maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio from FCPX project all the way thru DVD creation in iDVD? In your tutorial was your FCPX project in 16:9? When you created your theme in iDVD you clicked to make it 4:3. Have to tried to take a 16:9 project in FCPX - export to GarageBand for chapters then export to iDVD create a theme and maintain 16:9 aspect ratio?
Sorry, I did mean IDVD. And the problem is real. Take a look see on the internet. iDVD sometimes has a problem interpeting the aspect ratio inormaiton sent to it from Final Cut Pro. Its a well documented problem. In your tutorial, I followed all the steps and they worked out fine. Except when I created the DVD template in iDVD and played back the video in the preview all the video behind the menu chapter buttons changed the aspect ratio to 4:3. Am I missing something? Thank you!
Thank you for your quick reply. The QT Movie created by FCPX looks fine on the desktop. The QT movie still looks fine (16:9) when dragged into GarageBand and after menu chapters are created. GarageBand versio 6.0.4. The problem occurs when shared to iMovie 11. My iMovie preferences are in correct in "preferences and project." When a theme opens and it asks the format I click for 16:9. The theme pages i created are in 16:9 but the ALL the buttons when clicked then play the video in 4:3.
@Governmatic Sorry still can't seem to get the same problem. I don't quite understand why you would want to export back to iMovie 11 or did you mean iDVD?
If anyone else has an idea on this query please post.
Your workaround works fine to add chapter markers to FCPX........HOWEVER, when I export from Garageband into iDVD the 16:9 aspect ratio changes to 4:3 and I cannot change it! The project maintains its original 16:9 aspect ratio in FCPX; Garageband and Quicktime but changes to 4:3 in iDVD. Strangely, the iDVI menus are in 16:9 but all the video plays 4:3. Preferences are set properly. Do you have the same problems?
@Governmatic Hhmm - Sorry but I could not seem to recreate your problem. Dragging a 16:9 ratio into GarageBand just shows normally as a 16:9 movie on my system. Does the exported movie look OK when burned to DVD? Are you using an old version of GarageBand? Strange!!!

Brilliant tutorial! And I have a fix for the 16:9 issue but I can't post a URL here. Send me a message via YouTube and I'll send you the URL. Cheers!

Would it be easier/better to open .mov file in Imovie and re-export? Or would that cause a loss of quality?
stelles02 5 months ago
@stelles02 Yes I forgot to mention that but the Garageband interface seems a bit more elegant to use.
