  • i wish I've seen this vid before. I got a d90 with an 18-55 lens. then got a 18-200. they said that lens is great but i'm not satisfied. now i know why. i should have just gotton the sig 70-200 f2.8 hsm II. i just needed to add a little more bucks.

  • @shutterpillow why did you get the 18-200? With the AF motor you could of gotten a 35 1.8G and a 50mm AF-D for the same price. Sell your 18-200. And get a Sigma 70-200 2.8. or a 2.8 lens any focal length.

  • @Freepepsi42 - ken rockwell said it's a good lens. and i'm an idiot to believe him. still looking for a buyer. and am going to get that sig 70-200.

  • 3.5 to 5.6..

  • he is extremely attractive and has many good points. very helpful

  • theres a mistake in the description - 'WITHOUT better glass you will be much happier with your results and be less frustrated', shouldn't it be WITH better glass?

  • do all lenses fit any dslr camera body?

  • @DimitryDino No, Canon has a series line and Nikon has a series line. What I would do if I was you is just look up what lenses fit your camera! Its generally pretty easy to find out on Google. I hope I helped!

  • hey jared great vid but u should check your description it says "without better glass you will be much happier with your results and less fustrated' shouldn't it be "with" instead of "without

    "

  • what is the best entry level DSLR for live shows? music venues, with little light aside from constantly changing light displays

  • in this video u sugest a 4gig card for a bigginer. im no pro, but i have been takeing pictures for years. i always borrowed my friends SLR's, but im finally getting my own. so would u sugest a 4GB card still, for my situation. or should i go up to 8-16? (I plan on getting 2; class tens)

  • awesome, subscribed

  • hey jared awesome vids im going to purchase a D3100 and now you have convinced me on buying the body only , can you list three lenses(names and MM) that would be great for beginners, just so i can look around price wise?

  • Helpful video, thanks.Mike

  • I just started with used a Nikon d70 and used Nikkor 35mm 1.8g with 8GB card. My budget was tiny and the set was only 250€ altogether. Not bad right? My next glass is going to be Nikkor 85mm 1.8d then the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8. And then it's time to upgrade to d90 and keep the d70 for a back up. Maybe I will start saving for the 70-200mm 2.8 after that.

  • Thx Fro for the info

  • This is a very helpful video. It's as if you're getting a good advice from a very good friend. Jared thank you so much! i will take your advice. At first I was thinking of buying a more expensive DSLR; but now, I'm thinking of getting just about an entry level camera and a large aperture lens. I'm planning on getting a 50mm F1.4 coz I'm so addicted to taking crisp subjects over sufficiently blurred backgrounds. What do you think? :)

  • jaredpolin, what would you say are the best 2 lenses for a D7000? i intend to use the camera for portrates and street photography. dark and light conditions.

  • Thanks helped a lot :)

  • why now is the time to crush it

  • what "mm" mean in lens ??

, i actually wanna buy a cam with good zoom plz help me out understand that !!

  • @pranshu87 its means the focal lengh, but you have to multiply it with 1,5 for dx nikon and with 1,6 for ef-s canon! 18mm is a wide angle under that its a ultra wide angle. 50mm is a standard lens (so you would have to buy a 35mm lens). 85mm is light tele and 150 is tele. over 150 its long tele!

  • @pranshu87

    Millimetres perhaps

  • @FirebrandNIRE i knew that ;)

  • @pranshu87

    Cool ;-)

  • thanks ;)

  • Great video. I wish I would have seen this before I bought my d3000 last year with the 18-55 kit lens. I have spent so much time trying to work around the lens's limitations, it is just ridiculous (the main subject of my photography is my 220 gallon aquarium, so the lighting paired with the lens makes for an extremely frustrating situation). Can't wait until my 35mm comes in on Monday.

  • your eyes look kinda weird and move around a lot, are you stoned in this video?

  • @lekmann my eyes do move, i was born with an eye condition which causes the muscles to twitch and when im tired the eyes shift back and forth.

  • @JaredPolin Old video... but of curiosity do you ever notice your eyes moving when they do? does it change how you see something, or do you just not notice it?

  • @lekmann i think i got the same thing, because whenever police stops me they think i am high because my eyes shift left and right like yours in this video.

  • @lekmann He is white and has an afro... he is always stoned :-)

  • @lastlane Who cares, damn some people smoke herb some smoke rancid tobacco leaves, don't hate and no one forces you to watch the videos do they, gun to your head or something, ah no didn't think so (:

  • @DeadlyRawPork I never once said it was a bad thing, ASSUming makes an ASS out of U. Go clean your vag because you are clearly on your period

  • @lastlane Dude you need to watch your lil digital mouth, Only thing I would need to clean would be my &d after I smacked you upside the head with it chump. What are you like 17 and still living in mommies basement in the middle of like podunk Arkansas. Ha what a joke.

  • @lekmann you are just jealous Jared has people watching his videos and you don't(: Great videos never mind the messenger pay attention to the message.

  • you'r helping me so much man, thank's a lot!

  • hey jared, does ur guide apply to micro 4/3 systems as well?? i step up from a point and shoot to a micro 4/3 recently, but find it rather limited with lens choice..... =( on the bright side, the image quality is good though, much better than a point and shoot!!

  • Great video, helped alot !

  • Description:

"The most important thing is the glass, without better glass you will be much happier with your results and be less frustrated."

    lol

  • do they still have that lens for the same price? cant find it

  • I'm into shotting models, i'm having canon T2i, 18-55mm kit lens, 50mm 1.8. I'm on a budget, should i get the 430 EX II flash or a better glass at the similar price? if so, which one should i get?

  • @Eclipse6491 Depends on what you want to do. BTW, flash photography is not just about adding more range during low light - It is all about adding special effects using bounce from the walls, diffusing light from the flash gun etc.

Based on the glasses you have, I can clearly see a need for more telephoto. You need the 55-250 mm to begin with. 430 EX II can be postponed. According to me, better glass takes preference.

  • Mate, you just made me laugh by suggesting that 3.5 @ 18 mm is a bigger aperture than 4.5 @ 55 mm. Are you serious? Believe you would need to check your facts before anything.

And when giving suggestions on a generic topic, please stay neutral. What you have suggested here probably applies to someone who is decided on Nikon. Nikon no doubt is good, but entry level cameras are made equally good by Canon, Pentax, Sony and even Olympus. Please don't propogate a specific brand.

  • @KVSKPrasad ? 3.5 is a bigger aperture than 4.5? do some research before you criticize. he recommends nikon, and he says in the video canon or nikon.

  • @skatebaker321 Yes. 4.5 @ 55mm = 55/4.5 = 12.22 mm whereas 3.5 @ 18mm = 18 / 3.5 = 5.14 mm.

So, which is a bigger aperture - f4.5 @ 55mm or f3.5 @ 18 mm?? Depth of field is more related to the size of the aperture and that's why, you get excellent bokeh at telephoto lenses even at f8 and not so great bokeh @ 18mm even when the lens is opened to the max.

I don't think he is neutral - He is a Nikon guy all the way and that is my opinion.

  • @KVSKPrasad all that math for nothing. all hes saying is that 3.5 is a bigger aperture than 4.5. it is a bigger aperture, the bokeh at higher zooms doesnt make the aperture bigger, theres just a difference in the DOF

  • @skatebaker321 Sorry. That is not what he is saying. Please listen carefully and then let me know. All that maths is everything man. f-number is the ratio of aperture and focal length. So, f2.8 at 300mm is bigger than f2.8 at 200 mm which is bigger than f2.8 at 100mm.

It is the size of aperture that effects the DOF you get. So, at higher focal lengths, it is quite obvious that you would get excellent DOF even at normal f-number ranges !!

  • Hey if you could do me a huge favor that would be great.

Do you think you could put together a starter package for about $1000-$1100.

  • Thank you for taking the time to put up this video. GREAT information

  • Jared you OWN! Your show is amazing, I like how you take your time and give advices to newbies also. I just bought my d3100 few days ago with the 18 - 105mm VR, maybe I should just bought the 35mm 1.8G but I'm going to get it soon and I'm starting to get more and more into manual. Peace Jared! Say hi to grandma for me :D

  • This helped so much! I was trying to decide if I should get a Rebel T2i starter kit or get a XSi body and invest more money in the lenses.

  • This is the best review ever. Nice!

  • Hi, Can you help me? I want to buy new dslr camera and i'm a beginner. can you suggest dslr camera that mostly have this specs? Image stabilization Live view LCD Color control (especially flesh tones) Low noise at high ISO settings Image noise reduction for slow shutter speeds Remote shutter release Small size and low weight Extended dynamic range Lots of external flash options please reply. thank you. =)
  • @Imewora Hello, I am no professional but I have the Nikon D3100. It is my first DSLR and it is going great for me. It is easy to use, and takes great pictures and excellent shutter speed. The camera is fairly priced and I have two lenses with it. An 18-55 and a 70-300 and they are both great. Hope that helps you though I am not Jared. :)

  • Comment removed

  • @Scottdude21 you dont have one =P

  • @Imewora Pentax K-x should fit you perfectly :)

  • Hi Jared

Do you recommend me to get the canon 450d refurd with 18-55 kit lens for £330 and a sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens

Would this be a good beginner nature/bird photography

    Thanks

  • Hey Jared, I'm saving up my money to buy the Nikon D3100 but I'm debating on whether I should buy the dslr with the kit lens, or purchase only the body with a different lens. If I do buy a separate lens, which one do you recommend?

P.s- I've practiced shooting with my brother's D60 before so I'm used to playing around with aperture and shuttersp. so I'm not a total newbie, but I still have a lot to learn and this will be the first time I buy my very own!

    thanks in advance :)

  • Hi Jared. Great video with lots of informations i say. really thank you. U know, when u want to get your 1st camera and ask ppl which one, they really made me confused. Thanks god u r the 1st one supported Nikon D3000 body which i planned myself before ppl distracted me. But i searched for the mentioned lense in B&H and adorama, could nt find the sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 . can you help me on this, there were 18-50mm 2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM lenses, but not the one you mentioned.

  • I see you have CRUSH ITby Gary Vaynerchuk on your bed, that must have inspired you to create FroKnowsPhoto yeah?

  • Hey Jared, I don't mind spending a little omn some lenses. Its my first SLR, what do you suggest I bu (lenses and body, today? For under $800 ?

  • @JaredPolin Hey Jared, what do you think of Sony DSLR's ?

    PS videos are awesome !!!!!!!

  • Hey Jared, ur the best. Thank u so much for taking the time to start from scratch when explaining something. Very few if any take the approach of speaking to people like myself who are new to photography and are just becoming familiar with the jargon. Keep doing what u do. Love it!!!!

  • Is canon eos 1000d/rebel XS good for first dslr?

  • @tannu99 Yes its a very good starting Canon camera. The 1000D or the 550D is both great "pretty" cheap cameras.

  • i started with nikon d3100 best buy i ever maid it came with the lens kit but the a went for the nikon 55-200 mm af-s nikkor glass wich is also awsome

  • @khetanagrim d7000 is pretty good just dont get crap glass.

  • Comment removed

  • @khetanagrim the body is a good idea, the lens i would pass on and get something better but it will work to start.

  • @JaredPolin what would u recommend to start off with... i'm getting a decent body right now... lenses maybe lateron i can add to the kit... what lenses do u think i should consider?

  • @khetanagrim nikon 35 1.8, 70-200 2.8 sigma version 2 is good for 800 bucks.

  • ok... will invest in lenses as i save up more.. for now i think i need to settle with the 18-105mm... thanks for the quick response...

  • Good vid a bit dated by now but is it crazy that im starting off with a d7000? <reason is 3100 doesnt have a mic input? i think im going to get a 35mm 1.8 also ? should i wait go or go canon? (family has a bit invested in nikon?)

  • awesome tips! i just got the nikon d5000 kit with 18-55 lens f3.5-5.6 and 55-200 f4-5.6 and now im thinking of returning it and purchasing the body and lens separately..i really wanna have a lens with a low f stop number to blur out elements better

  • I have a question, I've had a pretty good point and shoot camera for a while, the canon sx20 is, and i think im definitely annoyed with it, and ready for an SLR, and ive been looking into them for a while, and I think the two options would be the nikon d3100, or the canon rebel t2i, or t1i, i was just wondering if there were any major differences i should know about these two cameras, i dont want to be too ambitious, but i also want to get a camera that i will be happy with for a while.

  • Love your vids, this video really helped me. I'm 15 years old and thinking about buying my first dslr. I used to shoot with a canon point and shot and liked making photo's alot. Currently I am saving up for a nikond d3100 but you said it is better to buy a d3000 and a good lens. what should i do?

  • diffrence between (Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX ) and 55-200 AF-S DX VR any big feature diffrences?

  • hey jared :D im jaysen from the uk... i want to move to dslrs, for half photography and half video, i was going to buy a canon t2i ... what lenses and is this a goodbody thnkx

  • @jaysenstudios canon just sent me one to play with its ok so far for what it is. The video is very good, id prefer less magapixels for better high iso photos.. But look into the 50 1.8 to start as the is a great learning lens. Than depending on what you are shooting i can help you figure it out.

  • @JaredPolin i shoot alot of portraits and landscapes. I guess i need a telephoto lens and a wide lens. How does that sound? And since i live in the uk... i can buy the body off american websites for cheaper and ship them here. That leaves me just about £450/$700 for lenses... is that enough?

  • Thanx 4 the great recommendation

less money on body, more on glass, stay away from kit lenses, got it :)

still I have a question. You recommended two lenses to start with sigma18-55 f2.8 and Nikon 35mm.

Do you think I should have both? I like the idea of Sigma but would it help a lot in portrait?

  • @alfadhli007 if ur getting 1 lens to start id say 35 only. Than figure 18-50 for general purpose and than the 70-200 sigma for others!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @JaredPolin

Thnx man, I really appreciate your instant response I think i'll get both now and later on the telephoto

  • Thank youuuuu!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • and my second question is i want a good lens and i am thinking of getting the 70-200 lens cause it works as a wide angle and a telephoto, and the description says you can use it for many things... i need it to work with portraits weddings landscape sports ARCHITECTURE. so will the 70-2000 do that or should i get another lens? an i really wnat a really gooood lens?

  • Comment removed

  • hi i am getting a new camera and either i am getting the nikon d-5000 or 7000? but the 7000 is twice as much as the 5000 which one should i really get? im a beginner so i was wondering the 7000 has a 39 focus points so it would be easier? is the 7000 worht the price?**** (and i loveeeeee your vid. they are sooooooo helpful) thank you :)

  • @843210003 well, i am using a D5000 when i started my hobby. i think it's almost gonna be a year old. The only problem i found when my D5000 is that it lacks the shortcut buttons that you need like the White Balance settings the ISO settings etc. but yes there is a function button so that you could assign for 1 shortcut but it's still not fit for me now that i know a little more. But i'm upgrading to D7000 for a mid range camera w/ have a motor in it(unlike the d5000) so i can use AF lenses.

  • What about a Nikon D7000? I'm moving from a Nikon L100. I'm ready to move up and was thinking of getting a D90. When the Nikon D700 came out I relised that I was just a couple $100 from the sale price of the 7000. Why not go all out and buy something that will last me a long time.

  • @mastertohn your better off putting your money into lenses they will last you years and years longer than any body.

  • thank you very much for all that information!!! :)

  • Jared, i have a D3000 and kit lens (18-55, 55-200). I was too naive and so amateur, so i picked those crappy lens. After i purchased a Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens, i didn't even wanna touch those kit lens anymore. But 35mm give a narrower view. My photography field are portrait and landscape.(is it too broad?). Now i am thinking to get one more big Aperture lens, but Nikon lens are way..beyond my budgets. What would you recommend for alternative lens?

  • @hihidemon look into the sigma 70-200 2.8 versions 2 its a good alternative.

  • @hihidemon Since i've faced a similar problem to yours, i'll give you a few tips from my experience: Don't throw away the 18-55, at 18@f/5.6-f/8 you have a great landscape lens - sharp center, decent corners (correct distortion & vignetting in PP)...REALLY! You have the 55-200 ... Say... 70mm@f/4.2 = Decent background blur, decent sharpness (& it's got VR, so you'll be able to handhold it). And check out a nifty fifty (50 1.8) even if it won't autofocus. It's an awesome lens for ~100$

  • @Kain987 ...thank u kain, but it's kinda late because i just rid-off my 18-55 lens for 130bucks. thanks for the tips!

  • Jared, nice stuff you've got on your channel :) I'm subscribing. I do have a question, should you have the time to answer: What's your take on the Fuji S5 Pro? I've finally scrounged up the money (you won't believe the shit they give out as merit scholarships in my country) to get a new camera, so i'm thinking of putting aside my D40 & planning to get the Fuji for ~ 700$ second hand (it's a pain to focus the 50 1.8 on the D40) & i'm mainly interested in using it for portraits. (to be continued)

  • The thing is, i'm not sure if I should pony up the cash or save up & get a newer body. (Since i'm replacing my D40, i do plan on using the body i get for at least 1-1.5 years) The thing is, in the same price range, i could find a D200 or save up another 300$ & get a D300... I'm just not sure the nikons would perform any better for what i have in mind & what i need.

    Cheers.

  • hello..how about canon eos 1000d?

  • so im looking to get a dslr. i saw that the D3100 is 14 megapixels, but the D3000 is only 10.2 or something. Are those 4 megapixels worth spending more for?

  • @Gibson2471 It goes beyond the mp of the new camera as the new one has a new CMOS sensor and will really work well. The better bet is the d3100 right now.

  • haha! check out 3:50 with CC on.

  • .....this is the best explanation especially for the beginners !!!

    .....thank.

  • @MrBorgie13 anytime check out a lot of the newer videos please.

  • @ 3:10 ..more happy regardless of the camera u say?! so in my case..havent been shooting for more than a few days...i grabbed a d40x?! how is that?! besides old? lol..it came with a 5.6d 35-80 & sb-22 speedflash...been eyeing at a 35mm 1.8 after watching over 50+ of ur videos...any insight?! please fro..

  • @SixTheUrbanNerd D40x is nice to start. Hit up that 35 asap and you will be set for a little.

  • camera shake?

  • thanks for the info. so it wont be a huge issue is it? pictures wont be that messed up if shaken?

  • @nuckinfut what do you mean by shaken?

  • Comment removed

  • hi jared!

thanks for the advice. im planning on getting a d5000 or d3100 with the sigma lens you suggested. as im still learning about cameras and wondering what to buy, if i buy this combo is there vibration reduction or optical stabilazation on it? from what i understand, the lens that comes with kit has this in built. but i dont kno whether this is included on the sigma lens?

  • @nuckinfut the sigma has no vr but it's a 2.8 the Nikon kit is a 3.5-5.6 the vr there is pretty much useless.

  • Hey Jared, thanks for the awesome videos, Ive been watching lots of them lately, as a preparation for getting a dslr camera. So i've decided to get a D5000, as a basic entry level dslr. Your advice is to get good glass, but what I need is extra zoom(for shooting sports for example). Unfortunately the good fast lenses like 70-200 F2.8 or 80-200 F2.8 are simply too expensive(even Sigmas) and I just can't afford them. Is 55-200mm F4-5.6 a good enough alternative? Do you have any other suggestions?

  • @pe3ucTop If u can wait about two weeks Nikon has an announcement of new cameras. The rumor of a d3100 is there and that would possibly be better than the d5000 when it comes out. In terns of larger glass what did u have to spend?

  • @JaredPolin Hey, yeah, I heard about the expected release of D3100 and D95, and I was wondering if I should wait for it, not only because of the introduction of new bodies that might be of interest, but also because of supposed drop of prices of the old bodies. I'm not really experienced in the dslr market - I don't even know if that happens as a practice or if the prices stay pretty much the same. As for my budget - I have about $900-1000 total for the body and lenses...

  • @pe3ucTop Def wAit, prices may jump slightly on new but it's worth it You don't want to buy old when new comes out. Drop me a line and I will help you build a starter set up.

  • im not intimidated by the size cost or settings i know alot about the cameras and i just need to know what a good starting kit with the canon t1i my budget is 1500 and im already getting the canon 50mm f1.8 with the camera is there a good telephoto i could get that would fit in to my budget

  • I just got my first SLR...Nikon D60 and Nikkor 18-70mm for $479. Great Video Thanks

  • Wow, amazingly helpful video.

  • @TeddyBcool2000 Thanks, please check all my new videos as well and Fro knows photo dot com

  • Dear Jared

Thanks a lot for the response. What is your opinion on the following two cameras:

    canon eos 500d (t1i rebel)

    and

Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens? I am getting a good deal at this along with Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens for a total of 750 + 231 $

  • @ravijain2308 all those kit lenses are crap honestly you will not be happy with them, glass is the most important remember that

  • Dear Jared

Have been reading a lot on on photography but not yet bought my first DSLR. I can not afford to buy a camera to begin with and then to move to a better camera. thank you for this post of yours. I now learn that its the lenses that matter more. Which camera is your personal favourite? I heared that Canon gives you flexibility for using other camera lenses as compared to nikon. Is that true?

  • @ravijain2308 there is major flexibility with both camera systems. the lower end nikons wont let you use all of nikons glass but thats not a major issue in the least. I am a nikon guy i like it for many many reasons.

You can pick up a d3000 nikon and a 35 1.8 nikon for 500 bucks total!!!

  • thanks for quick response and ya i think the 300s would be what i need.

    i have a 50mm 1.4, 35-70mm 2.8 both nikon and then just two kit lenses made by tamron 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 and 75-300mm 4-5.6

i want to get the new body and then focus on a 200mm 2.8 any thoughts on that? it would be used for low light wrestling, basketball and then outside for football games, my sons games. THANKS

  • @lopezae33 Id focus on a 70-200 2.8 vr1 as a great indoor sports lens!!!

  • i have a d80 that ive been shooting with for about three years and im looking to upgrade. what body would you recommend or suggest? i was thinking d90 at first but the more i think about it the more i want the d300s. any answer would be appreciated im just not sure what to do. thanks!!

  • @lopezae33 If you are progressing as a photographer i would suggest stepping up the d300s. It is going to allow you some more creativity and feel more like a pro camera. What glass do you have as the glass is the most important!!! Check out some of my new videos as there is a ton of great info!!!

  • my suggestion: there's a full frame 35mm f2.0 (old design). it's about 100 bucks more expensive than the 35mm 1.8 DX, BUT: you can use this lense the same way you use your 35mm 1.8 AND you're investing in the future, because a full frame lense is what you can use on every camera, full frame and dx. so if you like photography, the day will come where you wanna buy your first full frame camera. and you'll be happy that you don't have to sell all your old DX lenses and upgrade to full frame lenses.

  • @Sinwori The new 35 1.8 works very well on full frame with very little issues. I jus tested that out today.

  • the day this was shot is my bday

  • @JazzeRae360 Well happy birthday.

  • I've only had the D50 for about a month. I have an F90x which I used to shoot, but I lost interest in film SLR photography when I realized I was getting much better shots from my rollei 35 pocket camera. The 24mm F2.8 interests me because it has the same field of view as the rollei (40mm FF equivalent).

On a D3 those heavy zooms would make more sense - the D50 is flyweight. Also, I find shooting with zooms difficult because there are too many possibilities.

  • @ralph435z I just bought a d3000 and I

picked up the 35 1.8. Look at that one it's very good and only $199.

  • Do you have any experience using the 24mm F2.8 or 28mm F2.8 on a DX body? I want a "normal" prime for my D50, and while it's fun to have a short tele at F1.4 (I could never have afforded the 85mm F1.4 for film), I miss having a true normal lens. Obviously the 24mm F1.4 (or 28mm F1.4) would make the best DX normal primes, but those are way out of my price range.

  • @ralph435z The 24 and 28 2.8 are older lenses but would be fine for what your needs are. How many shots do you have on the d50 at this point? That camera is def getting up there in age. At this point i like putting my money into the 24-70 as its going to be better than those 2.8 primes. But i bet you can pick up a 20 2.8 for pretty cheap.

  • Good point about the 50 1.8 being not so useful on the new DSLR's. I actually bought a used D50 rather than a new D5000, at about the same price, because I wanted to be able to use my existing 50mm F1.4 AF.

  • Quick question... what is your take on other third party lenses such as Tokina and Tamron?? I own a D300s and I'm looking for a mid range zoom with a aperture of 2.8. Thanks for your help.

  • @dk2893 Hey there, a lot depends on what you are shooting, are you shooting as a hoby and more for fun? There are some nice lenses out there from tamron and sigma but i there are quality differences between those and the nikon glass. Have you checked some used nikon glass? If i may, what is your budget? Its tough also to look at DX lenses especially if your going to go full frame one day. I owned the 17-55 2.8 nikon for a long time and it served me well. I hope this helps.

  • I'd say ignore the sigma zoom unless you can pick it up pre-depreciated. The 18-55 is wonderful, and the VR version means this low light F2.8 argument falls down. Sure, it would still be nicer to have the faster glass - but what about the 18-55VR plus the 50 1.8 instead of the sigma?

  • @ralph435z I still suggest a fast 2.8, the vr does not make it a 2.8 especially as you can't get a faster ss you get to hand hold slower. Unfortunitly you can't use the 50 1.8 unless you want to m focus, that's why I say 35 1.8.

    Thanks for your feedback.

  • Hi Jared,

I really appreciate the advice, just what i needed!

I supose there's no point getting a great camera if you are going to let it down with a poor lens.

I'm now very eager to go find me a camera and lens and hadn't though about refurbished camera's.

Glad i have somewhere to come for some honest advice.

    Many thanks,

    Grant

  • Thats Awesome... Every one thinking about getting into DSLR's Should watch this

  • Great video, Jared. If I get a Nikon, I'll most likely get a D3000 body with a 50mm 1.8, and maybe a 70-300. I was shooting sports today, and just couldn't stand my point and shoot.
