god id love to take my brat out in that snow..and speaking of wich im looking to get more power into my brat its a 81 first gen and im looking for something that isnt to hard and that could be done on a weekend
@simul84 well, EJ's dont have huge cam towers that make it really wide.. ive seen an EJ in a first gen brat, but an EA-82 couldent fit on its best day
@brumby420 Please, explain why ea81 cannot have a turbo? ea82t is a factory turbo engine. This video is a proof that ea812 can have a turbo and it will handle it fine, you just don't get it from factory you need to make your own just like i did. Oh and this ea81 is also 1800cc.
@simul84 It may not be completely impossible but on an old subaru budget I highly doubt it. The ea81 has no way to mount a turbo with a lot of custom fabricating in which case it would be cheaper to drop a whole new ej22 inside of there.
@brumby420 Believe it or not, i did it. almoust everything is custom made and it didnt cost much cause it did everything by my self from oil lines to up-pipes and exhaust. It cost something around 1/6 of the price of bolt-on ej20t, but there is a small point there, this body model doesn't have enough engine bay width for ohc/doch engines, ea81 is a ohv. See my other videos of this glf and see the engine bay your self, it ain't pretty but it works and it's HOME MADE!
@simul84 Well I gotta admit good job mate. Ive honestly never heard of a turbo in an ea81 before but I suppose you could have made one. if youd like to show me id be interested in dropping a turbo in my brumby. Anyways great job
@brumby420 Making an ea81 turbo is wery easy, you need a turbo and a carburator for turbo use and an intercooler and some aftermarket fuel pump (make sure it is enough big) with pressure regulator (for carb turbo) and then just put it all together and you will have a turbo ea81, needs alot of custom parts and night hours to make it but it is worth it. For more information, email.
@simul84 With custom fabrication you may be able to make an awkward turbo on an ea81 but on an old subaru budget I highly doubt it. It would be cheaper to put in an ea82. Also I wasnt saying the ea81 wasnt an 1800 I was just implying that the ea82 is a turbo compatible 1800. Its kind of a pre model to the ej18.
I believe I has said this before, and I'll say it again, It most definately has a blow off valve, you can hear it everytime he backs off the throttle, the screaming noise is the impellor not the blow off valve. The blow off valve keeps air running through the turbo so it doesn't have to spoool up again when he puts the throttle back on.
please tell me how do you instal the turbo on the turismo? i have one and i want to install a turbo please give me a picture whith tha engine and turbo
this engine is a stock ea81, only added with turbo and other stuff id needs to work propely. i havent open the engine it self (yet) and it seems to hold on, biggest thing it needed was to upgrade the clutch.
cool!! maybe show us how you did it? did you use the orginal carb? what level of boost? just curious:) had a EA 82 turbo. just orginal internally, but a bit of mods around it:) orginal boost 0,4 bar- my boost 1,2. blew evry gasket in sight!:-D
these days it has garret TO3 turbo (1bar boost), carb from volvo turbo, intercooler from ford escort rs turbo, then it has big fuel pump + pressure regulator and all other things that it needs to work properly. it havent needed any gasget changes...yet :) im looking for better and bigger carb then it needs bigger IC and boost will be then something around 1.5bar. ill put some pics somewhere on the internet someday.

you could get EA-81 turbo subarus, unfortunatly they only came with automatics.
also, an EJ-22 is just as narrow as a EA-81

@STIWuff "EJ-22 is just as narrow as a EA-81"
Are you sure? have you measured it? i know those aint the same width, ea-81 is much more narrow than probably any other subaru boxer engine.

@STIWuff But EJ wont fit to glf without body modification, i've measured it. Believe it or not brat is a different car than glf.
simul84 1 year ago
@STIWuff I own a 1st gen brat and an 2002 Wrx with a EJ20 and i know for a fact you cant fit the EJ20 into the first gen brat without modification

the ea81 engine cannot have a turbo but ea82 which is an 1800 cc engine will take a turbo.

Well guys that sounds like compressor chatter to me.
The pressure inside the intake builds and has no other way out than to escape past the compressor wheels blades, making this sound in the process.

it doesnt have blowoff valve. see the other video that shows the engine room with the first few seconds and see it your self...

I just voted this as one of "the best sounding car clips of all time". Love the ingenuity and the 3 main engine. Clever is an understatement.

WHy do you clal this a "Turismo"? It's a Subaru.
Turbocharging an engine that was not designed for turbocharging will reqire a major upgrade, which is probably expensive.....

that is for some engines...
