@spacitydrummer4JC With respect for those great drummers, no need to put the name of Smith and Weckl... Vinnie comes from Tony, Buddy, Gadd and other player like Harvey Mason, Zigaboo, Mike Clarck, etc... But he has his own voice, he's so unique, right on.
@spacitydrummer4JC You must have suffered some head trauma. ALL musicians learn and grow from each other and their predecessors. There is nobody better for there is only the musician and the music in that moment in time.
Had the pleasure of meeting His Greatness in my small town of Greenville, SC last week after playing with Herb. Ace drummer AND an ace guy! I shook his command hand.... 3 TIMES!!!
How is it that he plays all that stuff but it never sounds like it gets in the way of the music ? Did he receive some hyper -creative DNA at birth that the rest of us didn't ?
I think the thing most of us drummers don't get about Vinnie is that's he's a musician, he listens. That's why he doesn't get in the way of the music, he's in harmony with it.
It's not just about technique with him. For us mere mortals, we struggle so much to get to grips with tech and coordination stuff that we can forget about music.
Btw it's "5 PIECE" not 5 peace. Why would you want peace (& quiet?) with these guys! :P
got damn this band is the baddest shit ive ever heard... vinnie can tear the fuck out of those drums... sad to see him going but i cant wait to check out brian blade
i wanna see ron brunner play with them too... but brian is more than capable of hanging with them hes gonna bring a whole other level of musicality to the band
Vinnie played w/Jeff Beck for a while and, yes, he can tear ip up pretty good. I'm not sure about his fit with a primarily jazz lineup, though.
I saw Five Peace a couple days ago with Blade and he was amazing (as were the rest of the band). If there's any way you can get youself to see these guys, do it! Best jazz show I've ever seem in my 54 years.
No, Brian played very much within the band. That's one of the reasons I liked his fit better than Vinnie's. Very stylistic, DeJohnette-like, with a minimal kit. Bass, snare, 2 toms, 3 cymbals and a hi-hat. Strathmore looks to be sold out, hope you got tickets.
WOW.... John Mac is amazing, this composition of his (New Bruise, Old Blues) or something, is in 15/8 time signature... even Eric Johnson admitted to facing difficulty, when he was invited to record a solo for this song in his INDUSTRIAL ZEN album....
The more I watch this solo, the more I love it. Think I can play the majority of it now too, which is cool! I'll never come close to the feel of Mr. Colaiuta though :P
from what I understand about endorsements; you must play the sponsering company drums always. You have to support and promote as much as possible and whenever possible. I fact, I believe I read this about DW (Drum Work shop) or Tama. Either case. I believe this stipulation applies to any/all companies a drummer endorses. Like Virgil, he plays Pearl drums and pedals. Vinnie plays, I believe DW pedals, but he gets a lot of free and discounted gear, so who wouldn't want to comply with the terms?
Um, Vinnie is a Gretsch endorsers, but sometimes they use whatever the promoter can get if they have to use a back line kit. Vinnie used to be a long time Yamaha endorser, but he switched during his Sting days (early 90's).
Oneness100, I know this response is coming late, but i'm aware that Vinnie plays Gretsch drums because he even has his own custom black & white kit you see often in drum magazines. I was just making the observation that he uses DW pedals. Normally, the drummer will also use the same brand pedals as the drums(Lang &Donati). Gretsch do however, support using the Gibrator gear; this is the gear you see in Gretsch catalogues. Nonetheless, you're right, Vinnie plays Gretsch.
im seein this band in january and damn..once i do i can die knowin i have seen the best musicians on the face of the earth!! i mean does a line up get any better?!?!wow
In this video Vinnie is playing Yamaha drums, Zildjian cymbals and the new Gretsch snare. In this place (Lituania) he didn't have his Gretsch drums!! Logistic problems?
What drums is he playing there? The bass is taped.. they look a little like Yammies? Could be wrong.. that'd be quite a turn up for the books :| They do sound amazing whatever they are.
Trust me, those are NOT Gretsch drums. Explain why the bass drum logo is hidden underneath black tape and the lugs/what you can see of the badge on the 10" look nothing like Gretsch drums.
Also looks like he's using one of the Zildjian/Noble & Cooley limited edition bronze snare drums here? I'd kill for one of those.
That's what I thought at first, good ol' RCs. I wonder what Vince would reckon to the new PHX's? More specifically I wonder if he'd do a Gary Novak and switch... haha. I'll get to see what the PHXs sound like tomorrow when I see the one and only Dave Weckl!
Btw, love your playing Rodge! You're definitely a big source of inspiration to me!
Yeah, they are definitely not Gretsch here...look like Yam RC's or something--hard to tell. The snare looks like a Gretsch hammered brass of some sort, not a NC/Zildjian, which he also has...
I second that notion Rodge! You are truly a monster. I hope you are well my friend.
Rodge and Tom!Both Monsters!!!! get back on house of drumming where we all belong! lol Maybe a Hammered Bronze snare like he was using with Beck last few years....
I think it's the polished hammered brass 14x5 he's using here. They don't cost a lot either, might have to treat myself to one! Haha.. what can I say. It does have one hell of a crack.

I'm really trying to see them when they come to Strathmore in late April I think... Did Brian play out as much as Vinnie?
SpencerMA89 2 years ago
No, Brian played very much within the band. That's one of the reasons I liked his fit better than Vinnie's. Very stylistic, DeJohnette-like, with a minimal kit. Bass, snare, 2 toms, 3 cymbals and a hi-hat. Strathmore looks to be sold out, hope you got tickets.
billfuddled 2 years ago
I personally think Vinnie swings the group in more of a fusion direction, whereas Blade has more of a defined jazz sensibility to his playing.
I love the live CD that was brought out recently, but some of Chick's choices are a little out there for me. Any opinions on this?
paulo101 2 years ago

Are you refering to the tunes, musicians,
or the perfomance.....I have the new
