So because seaworld rescues sick animals and rehabilitates them, the animals owe seaworld a life of servitude? That's wrong. Wild Animals are not meant to be held in captivity for the entertainment of humans. They are wild and unpredictable. That's their nature. I swam with dolphins in Cuba when I was a kid. Since then I watched the documentary The Cove. I would suggest everyone watch it before going swiming with dolphins in captivity, it really does open your eyes to the horrid jurney they make from open ocean to there tank. Theres a good chance that these dolphins watched there brothers, sisters and babies slaughtered side by side. For me its a no brainer. I challenge anyone to watch it and still be enthrilled to see them in this way.
I can't believe there are so many people that support cruelty to these animals and actually go to Sea World. You are an asshole if actually go to such a place.
I'm ok with animals in captivity if the trainers actually teach you stuff about them. But only if you just get one or two and not more (and if those animals have been born in captivity). But things like Seaworld.. It's better to just go to the ocean, get on a boat and see it for yourself..

the amount that were in that tank was ridiculous. It's not even big enough for one never mind 6 (I think that's how many there was). I would never go see one of these shows, it's horrible. Taking such an animal from the wild and putting it in a swimming pool to do tricks to amuse the public.
People need to understand that SeaWorld doesn't keep them and torture them, these whales are spoiled they don't have to wonder the ocean looking for food, they get fed everyday tons of fish, they get medical attention if/when needed, and the trainers DO NOT get in the water with them anymore. Why can't you see that it's about the connection with these beautiful animals and people?

@MoonChildKurookani I agree with you, they shouldn't have been taken out of the wild. But you also have to realize SW wasn't the ones who did that. All the whales that were wild-born were originally taken for parks such as SeaLand of the Pacific (tilikum) and Marineland Ontario (Katina). The parks really weren't built to house an orca, even if it's not equal to the wild, they are living in the best possible place (besides the wild).
Whales should NOT be kept in captivity! NO ANIMALS should! they have familys! a killer whale is actually a soft creature but when you get took from your family, put in a small tank, made to perform everyday they are gonna lose it so its seaworlds fault why this trainer died! dont get me wrong i do feel sorry for the trainer but animals are not puppets so they should not be treated like one!

@xdeadwaterx Yes, it would suck to have been taken from my family. I never said SW did the right thing by taking them from the wild. If I had been alive back then, I would have been against it unless they were unhealty or alone, like the person before me had said. But it still happened, but it's different now. SW is not a circus, they don't keep their animals and tiny cages and give them minimum care. The whales love to perform, if you really watched with an open mind you'd be able to see it.

Don't get me wrong, SeaWorld is pretty much my home and I love those whales more than anything, but they were taken from the wild because they were young and healthy looking. But on the Bright side, the only wild born whales at SW Orlando now are Tili and Katina; and we all know they both are in the best care possible and love to show off. I like your ethusiasm though =p

@flashback0978 technically no, but then again, domestics house cats and dogs are not wild animals. their relatives are (tigers, jaguars, cheetahs, wolfs, foxes ext.). our pet dogs and cats are not wild nor have ever been, they were bred into being domestic. birds and fish however, that's a different story.

the amount that were in that tank was ridiculous. It's not even big enough for one never mind 6 (I think that's how many there was). I would never go see one of these shows, it's horrible. Taking such an animal from the wild and putting it in a swimming pool to do tricks to amuse the public.

People need to understand that SeaWorld doesn't keep them and torture them, these whales are spoiled they don't have to wonder the ocean looking for food, they get fed everyday tons of fish, they get medical attention if/when needed, and the trainers DO NOT get in the water with them anymore. Why can't you see that it's about the connection with these beautiful animals and people?

Please do your homework. Seaworld might not have the intention of torturing the creature, however, ocean v.s. pool surrounded by noise pollution... no contest. What makes you believe they do not miss hunting, having the ocean as their natural home, be with their pod (connecting with them, not us), etc? Do you think they would do this tricks if set FREE, free being a key word here. You think they are spoiled because you have a personal view of that kind of life being grand. Why can't you see that they, and others; elephants, lions, bears, dogs, and so on, are not here for our amusement.

Its part of the dolphin family not the whale family. Its closest relative is the Irrawaddy dolphin, as told to me be my marine biologist friend who also said that although a porpoise comes under the main heading cesteacen doesnt mean its a whale either.

@MoonChildKurookani I agree with you, they shouldn't have been taken out of the wild. But you also have to realize SW wasn't the ones who did that. All the whales that were wild-born were originally taken for parks such as SeaLand of the Pacific (tilikum) and Marineland Ontario (Katina). The parks really weren't built to house an orca, even if it's not equal to the wild, they are living in the best possible place (besides the wild).

Whales should NOT be kept in captivity! NO ANIMALS should! they have familys! a killer whale is actually a soft creature but when you get took from your family, put in a small tank, made to perform everyday they are gonna lose it so its seaworlds fault why this trainer died! dont get me wrong i do feel sorry for the trainer but animals are not puppets so they should not be treated like one!

@courtneymg93 in exactly one month from yesterday, it'll be the one year anniversary of Dawn's death. Tili is the whale that was involved in the incident, but that was the last thing. And I just wanna say this, a lot of ppl are going to say he hasn't hurt anyone because he hasn't been in contact with anyone, but it's not true. In fact, someone just posted a picture of the big guy getting his teeth cleaned about a week ago =)

@xdeadwaterx Yes, it would suck to have been taken from my family. I never said SW did the right thing by taking them from the wild. If I had been alive back then, I would have been against it unless they were unhealty or alone, like the person before me had said. But it still happened, but it's different now. SW is not a circus, they don't keep their animals and tiny cages and give them minimum care. The whales love to perform, if you really watched with an open mind you'd be able to see it.

Don't get me wrong, SeaWorld is pretty much my home and I love those whales more than anything, but they were taken from the wild because they were young and healthy looking. But on the Bright side, the only wild born whales at SW Orlando now are Tili and Katina; and we all know they both are in the best care possible and love to show off. I like your ethusiasm though =p

people need to get over the fact that there is such stuff as animal training going on. its been going on for such a long time yeah people are gonna get hurt and maybe killed but they chose to do this and they took a risk. there is nothing we can do about there dream and whether they fulfill their dream or not. Plus, Trainers train the amazing creature and give it love and food and shelter. That is all that it needs.I am sure that training has also given us huge leads in science and animal study

thats how they used to start the old show before the new 'believe' show.
At the start of the show an eagle used to fly in and take a lure from the water, then the whales would come out and then someone would kayak around them.
i think it was to give a sense of them in the wild but it doesnt really work.

I don't think there's anything wrong with keeping them in captivity, because as long as they ARE in captivity, we can preserve their species and keep them from being hunted down out in the ocean and sold for human consumption. As someone who works with large animals (horses), I can come to appreciate the relationship that the whales and the trainers have. So I also disagree that you think the whales don't enjoy what they're doing.

If people have trouble making a 1,200 pound horse do something it doesn't want to do, then they SURE AS HECK aren't going to have any luck at trying to make a WHALE do it, which probably weighs about a ton or so.
