Apple has sufficiently differentiated itself from its competitors to be able to charge you a premium to use it. I really don't know anything about the Czech market, but I imagine that the lower average salary presented in the video is actually the reason Macs cost more there. Its counterintuitive, but not irrational. The demand in that segment of the market may be less elastic: perhaps most Czechs who can afford to buy Macs at $3000 aren't likely to be dissuaded by $3600.

Short answer: Why? Because there are people who will pay it. If you don't want to pay the Mac premium -- and I don't blame you -- buy another computer. Don't bear a grudge, vote with your feet. 25,000 usd is about 50,800 Czech crowns. Add in the 19% EU tax (=duty) and get about 60,466 Czech crowns (Still with me?)

Convert back to USD and get about $2,970

That's a lot less than $3,623!!!!!!

There is not only duty, but also Czech VAT, that's another 19 percent. Then it's about $3,540. It's surely not Apple's blame. (But missing "official" Czech translation of Mac OS X, no Czech iTunes Store etc. definitely are.)

I am a Czech Mac user, but I do not really get the message of this. What are you suggesting? If I am a creative person, I should be entitled to receive a Mac for a "reasonably low" price? I don't think creativity or national earnings have anything to do with the price of a computer. Focus on other issues Apple may change (the need to pay an additional fee to have your MAC OS X localized into Czech or other minority languages, or the lack of access to the iTunes store).

Tenhle komentar pisu z 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro dovezenyho z US. $2075 (160GB disk BTO). + jeste 5% dan v Bostonu. Bez dovozniho cla a dani. UPS to vzalo jako "knihy". Mac Book Pro v papirech je asi knizka :) A s dopravou (sly dva najednou) to vychazi jako ten samej tady bez dane. Takze myslim ze je to hodne velkej skok dopredu.
