the state really f'd everything up. It took me 12 hours to get from the bay to Rosenberg. The next morning alt.90 was stopped dead. I drove in the opposing lane for five miles and saw nothing but cars ahead to the horizon. I went back and started a letter of protest that I gave to folks in a car and had them write complaints and send it back the line. The last person take it to the DPS in Rosenberg. I stopped every ten or so cars to tell them what was coming. Later in the day the road was clear
Wow. I have read the comments ~ and though that was tough ~ I wouldn't blame the government or city officials. We all were NOT goign to go through what New Orleans did with Katrina. Had Katrina NOT have happened ~ Hardly anyone would have "FREAKED" and ran like we did. Lesson learned.
This is one of the worst times in my life and I put serious blame on the higher ups in Texas government (esp. Rick Perry) for blocking off vital exits off of I-45 and I-10. They created a death trap!!!
i was with the ARC and came from Arizona to help with Hurricane Katrina and ended up being in Hurricane Rita. We were ordered by the police to evacuate the ARC-Headquarters in Houston. So a friend i made and i took the ARC truck with supplies and made our way up towards Conroe where a shelter was being opened. It tooks us 16 1/2 hours to go that 36 miles. What i saw on that freeway with live with me for the rest of my life. I was also pissed to learn they never opened up the contrflow lanes.
I know what you mean about "what you saw." It was so hot, ambulances sounding off everywhere, people stranded whos car stopped or ran out of gas, 20 cars around every gas station, people laying down in the medians, overcome with heat, passengers getting out of cars to buy food and drinks from venders along 249, they could actually walk back because we were moving so slow. We also went to a shelter in Conroe, got up the next morning and drove back home. Houston was like a ghost town.
people are so fucking dumb...i drove from clear lake 40min to sugar land and the hurricane didnt do ANYTHING to clear lake, and even if it did it wouldnt do anything to sugar land...why didnt people just drive west on backroads instead of jamming up for 48hrs??? why would u need to go 5 hours north...no hurrican can even affect you 40 miles from shores..
There have been damage as far as 200 miles from the coast during Alicia. It was mostly tornadoes and rain but still ~ never assume your safe just because your more then 40 miles from shore.
I kept hearing all the officials talking about Contraflow during Rita. But in every video clip I saw on tv before the storm I saw no evidence of it. Just a lot of people caught in a traffic jam that was disaster in of itself.
They never instituted Contraflow. Local radio & TV people were suggesting it, wondering why it hadn't been done, speculating if officials ever would, but I don't think it ever actually happened. Afterwards, there was a lot of analysis about what happened and there is a plan in place to open contraflow lanes in the event of an evacuation.
In that case I would have created my own personal contraflow. Sitting there in a 400 mile parking lot with a monster bearing down on me would have driven me crazy.
Northbound was worse bro... And they decided to open up the other lane after like 20 hours of being stuck in traffic
