A good serviced 5.0 TPI with a T5 can do good fuel economy... I don't have the RPO codes but I suspect the rear gears are 3.27. I don't think the 305 came with 3.73's
@3rd4thgenFbody can u show me documentaion??? im on my 6xth 3rd gen fbody and 3rd 4th gens... but i have never seen documentation of 3.73 EVER being offered from the factory in an 82-92 fbody... 3.42 is the tallest gear i know of and that only came with the 5.0 tpi 5sp HO cars of 91-92 w dual cat ypipes... so unless it was istsalled after the factory then it def did not have 3.73 gears IMO btw ive owned 2 85s a z28 HO 5spd and a 85 iroc 5.0L auto "big cam" tpi
@flippinda87bird Actually there were a few from 83-86ish i believe that came with 3.73 gears. VERY few standard and some optional. The rear axle will have the GT4 code and more than likely the car will also have the g92 code. BUT G92 doesnt always guarantee its a GT4 axle. But again these are extremely rare
I got an 88 GTA 5.7 and I can get 0-60 in average 6 seconds.5.8/5.9 is pushing it. I have mild modifications.Though I wish i could get my hands on a TTA. hey got a 0-60 time of around 4.6 seconds. The fuel "Bladder" problem I keep my tank full,And even though the gauge goes down faster and have to go get gas more often. You spend a less because you have a lot less room to fill up I run 91 octane fuel in my GTA=80$ a month.my 93 cherokee 6L 4.0 =80$ a month on 85 octane just think if that was 91..
That is very good for the 305 motor. Nice... I had a 1986 Trans Am but was the carbed 305, it hit 60 in about 9 seconds. I also had a 1985 IROC Camaro with a 305HO motor, it too was carbed, but someone upgraded to a performance Edlebrock carb. I never timed the Camaro, but I know it was much quicker than 9 seconds 0-60.
@Mike85220 Had the '86 t/a and an '86 5.0 Mustang. The Mustang was light years quicker. Took until '89 for GM's to catch up. I remember racing the exact GTA to which you have and he jumped me off the line, but on the 1-2 shift I caught him and passed him on the 2-3 shift (chirping the tires of course to rub it in) He turned rather than face me at the next light... lol... GTA was a sweet looking car, especially in metalflake maroon with t-tops...
What year is this? 'cause I remember my parents having an '82 305 carbureted and there was something wrong like a pinhole in the fuel bladder which caused a vaccum leak which then in turn caused the computer to think it was running rich so it would make the mixture more lean and stall the car. lol if that's not a run-on sentence I don't know what is.
although, good times in the car, when we didn't have the old A/C unit from my dad's '77 Vette in it, it would fishtail so badly. lol
mmhmm. I've always wanted a trans am like that, only when my dad told me about the fuel bladder problem I was like, this might be a bit frustrating.
In case you were wondering, I don't know if it was a small cam or a large cam...it was all stock when they got it, only like 2000 miles, so it probably had the small cam.
Yeah, so it's definitely a small cam, because they had an auto...they both drove stick cars before that but it was all they could find and they needed something quickly.
90-92 speed density TPI 5.0's have the 350 L98 cam 86-89 maf cars have the peanut cam if they are auto 5 speed with G92 performance package got the 350 L98 cam
put some better TPI runners, a shift kit, plus a 3.42 or 3.73 rear end and you will stil have good fuel mileage on highway with twice the acceleration and torque at the wheels ;)
the problem with the auto boxes in firebirds and indeed more noticeably in the transam versions, they were quite slow shifting, so, all the torque the car had was being wasted, however, a manual gearbox fitted to that car will drop the 0-60 thrash if u de-clutch properly in roughly 7.2 seconds, the 5.7 v8 can do it in 6.0 seconds flat, which is what i got
Well keep in mind that for those days that car's speed was very respectable. You'd be surprised how much power you can unlock from these engines with a little work. With the right heads, cams, even pistons, you can easily get over 300 hp in these beasts. Too bad these TPI engines couldn't breath too well from the factory. :( Hopefully someday I can beef up my 305 TPI in my 91 Trans Am.
Mines a 350 tpi and its not as fast as it should be.

well the 82 305 is an lg4...all the same cam. The larger cam TPI was only in some of the 5 speed models and on the trans am it was called the HO
