Yeah, you really need to be completely Taiwanese to understand the film, because a lot of the humor in it is spoken in Taiwanese instead of simply mandarin. The love story between the Japanese man and the Taiwanese girl is really touching though, especially when the letters are narrated by such a beautiful voice.

I'm not a Taiwanese but I understand the film very well. The movie spells out human attachment to family and culture. The language is music. Dialects are just natural expressions in the movie.  Beautiful.

It's a good movie, but you really need to be a Taiwanese person to understand it 100%. There's a lot of cultural background and the usage of different languages (Mandarin, Hoken and Japanese), Jokes that might be hard to translate. However, it is a really nice film. It got the 2nd highest gross ever in Taiwan (beats movies like dark knight, jurassic park). The film shows a lot about people's life in Taiwan. I would recommand you watch it.
