I like the look they were trying to go for with the contrasting bookshelves, but I would've skipped the brass washers. I know what a brass washer is and it's guaranteed everyone else who walks in your house would too. Everyone will think you're crazy if you did that to your wall. It would've been better if they just went and bought some gold paint and stencils (i.e. fleur de france). Even then, if just seems like glorified prom decorations--might as well hang a disco ball while they're at it.
