Actually, this did air on TV in Australia for two runs from Dec 1, 2010 to Mar 18, 2011 on the Cartoon Network channel Boomerang. It was on every weekday night at 10PM with both runs. It was watching E12 that I remebered this on ABC TV in the 1980's and ordered the DVD set two hours later. The Region 2 UK DVD came out on June 30, 2008 and the Region 1 US DVD on April 7, 2009.
I was about 4 when this was broadcast in the 80's and I can only remember the tune and the odd parts of the intro bits...but the tune was that good that I used to sing it to myself and today I still remember it from back then. I had to look it up now Im 28 and I still love the intro tune. Cool. :)
For me particularly this was a very educational show. I've learned a great deal about history, geography and religions. It was very interesting, because it was all about the world I never heard about, the other side of the globe from where I was living. In Europe, between the 80' and 90', this was like National Geographic for kids. We also had a short film documentary explaining the actual story in the cartoon after each episode. Brilliant, because I instantly knew what it was really about.
For those that love this series I recommend Ulysses 31 which is another epic French/Japanese anime with each episode running like the chapters in a book. It is also fast paced with visual attention to emotion and defined in each cell. whilst the Dubbing actors sound a little wooden and unconvincing the fast pace is very similar to Mysterious Cities of Gold. Dogtanion, Willy Fog and Dungeons and Dragons seem to follow this pattern. I recommend them all.
@shedininja001 , It has a lot of historical facts and human virtues. There are hidden messages all over the cartoon. The question is where the messages come from. It's the way to behave to get to the truth I guess.
Loved the series. Loved the intro and the music more. Couldn't wait for the Pheonix/Condor to turn up in the series. But it didn't, until the end. Notice in the titles: the cockpit is obscured by the Pheonix/Condor head. Very Early Fly by Wire?
great clip... I remember watching and waiting for the episode where the kids eventually found the "golden condor"..... that was way cool!!!.... >:)...... i wonder what kids of today would think of this series.....???.............................. maybe we would be pleasantly surprised!?!?!
I think the BBC should have a throw back month. Run all the oldies, get Andy peters etc, back and see what todays kids think. I bet after a few episodes of this and other series, their imaginations will be in overdrive and they will be begging for every episode. Don't even tell them they are old, just run them.
Please do not add any more chapters to this epic- do not ruin this genius by trying to bring it to a modern audience thet does not apreciate it. We will end up with the fart jokes and the "talk to the hand" attitude that is prevelant in today's productions.
NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! don't milk it just leave it as is!! A new series would wreck the nostalgia - it'll be destroyed and lost forever due to greed. I'll never forget running (and I mean sprinting) home after school so i could flop in front of the TV and watch this - I was a nipper, but man that theme tune is amazing and has stuck in my brain!
there is no reaion to think they will not , if the sales go well they might - the orginal director, voice actors, etc all all on board, there is every good reasion to think it would be exelent
They really shouldn't make a sequal to the series now. The beauty and charm of the show was the time it was made, and just making a revamped version of this.. well... you know what happened with the new ghosrbusters series.
I 100% agree, just look at the new ghostbusters and the new superman films, even the new heman cartoons, leave them in history as classics!!!!!! and that they most surly are.
possibly - dont worry the voices actors would be on board and mendosa directed the first time around and would do so again, meny of the french creators would join as well so its going to be good (if its done) (suport it by getting the dvd!)
and i found out that more than 75% of what happens in this show is 90% of actual history
and i say 90% becous the people who were involved mysteriously disappeared, died or were calmed to be insane.
and for some reason i have a feeling that if the citys of gold are true i need to find them not for the gold but to understand the history of the world.
u guys would be rlly rlly surprised if u actually look up the history behind this show i watched this show when i was a kid in the middle east. Today out of no where after god knows how many years i just had a flash back of this show and i felt something rlly strange within me it made me realize i had to watch this show again... so idid today and finished it .
after that i started researching some real people and the history behind it .
Man i almost cried when i watched the last episode on my DVD set. I have around 50 TV shows (live action & animated) on DVD now & this one is easily & by far the best one & my favourite & it held my interest so much more than anything else, even as an adult. With most TV shows on DVD i was going through 1 or 2 episodes a night, but with this i was going through a disc per night.
I had a crush on Zia when this first on TV LOL...i had a crush on a cartoon character LOL
Due respect man, but if the series ended in 1983 it looks like you may be waiting a while for them to make another. Plus even if the original actors are still around they may sound a little different after 25 years.
your wrong on several accounts, the actors sound almost the same (they are featured on the dvd bonus) the director as well as the actors are willing to come back, and the current copyright owners are in plans to do something. The more fans that suport the show the better. if your a fan get the dvd, if not dont rain on my parade
This cartoon was totally fuckin awesome......so much so that I came in my Y-fronts when it came on my TV! I would sometimes cum on my etcha-setch just thinking about this. I suffered the same with Ulysses31.
awesome! just remember you might have to play (this version) on the computer because of the dvd code, I still do not know when the american date is, but why wait. :)
I watched this show again after nearly 20(!) years and I am even MORE in love with it than I was back then. I can't wait to get the DVD. When will it be released in the states?
Well I guess it's possible that they could make some more but I won't hold my breath. Though I guess I never thought they would make another Season of Battle Star ether.
Hulu took this off their site. They suck.

the show too much. God knows, the cartoons that kids watch these days are such crap.
