I go through a shinai every 3-4 months or so, but I train 4-5x a week. I have a planing tool that smooths out the slats if they begin to fray. I want to get a madake or carbon one. Good luck. Ganbatte.
Depends who you buy from. The ones I use average about $40 and even proper basic shinai cost about $20~$25. And what are you doing with yours that cause them to catastrophically break?
Hmm well the training shinais break easily, idk they just do :3 They're empty inside. Oh and to your second comment: Well, in some japanese stores, they have the real ones, they're all the way in the back lined up in their stands for my local store...which is like 30 minutes away -.- But I bought mine from japan, it was suppose to be just for show but I got into it. xD It was about 55 dollars in USD.
If you used them properly and for what they were designed for then they wouldn't break that quickly. If you're just smashing random things or people then of course they're going to break quickly. If you're actually using them for kendo and properly preparing and maintaining them then they'll last much longer.
Well mine is still fine after 4 years, but my friend's broke, and he's only a few steps behind me in kendo. I don't see too many unnecassary movements, but his swings are indeed reckless...
Haha ^^ Well these could last 4 or 5 years if you have the proper repair equipment. Or you can just go into your local japanese store and buy a real one xP
Nope, if you want proper shinai, you only buy from martial arts stores that specifically deal with kendo. The things you see in knick-knack shops are pieces of junk.
Oh btw, that's not a real shinai, inside is hollow. The real ones have metal chips and all that inside to hold it together :3 that's why I cut right through my friend's "Kendo training sword" xD It went SNAP
This is 2 nerds playing. This is not kendo. The fat one has probably watched Bamboo Blade.

Do not know what you think you're doing, but that is not Kendo.

I didn't realize the daiko was live. I thought it had been added in as fight music or something

What a waste of perfectly good shinai.

Like I said~~~ Those are practice shinais xD Not the real ones. Those only costed 15 bucks. The real ones range for 50 - 60.

Yup, it was only $15... if mine lasts a year or two, I'll be pleasantly surprised :^)
