  • What has happened to Sifu Hairston since he relased his 1st DVD? There was talk of a follow up DVD. There is no current info on him. It's like he's dropped out of site. :(

  • just by watching i can tell your fa qing is very strong. also is your structure. i am learning sun style hsing yi. not nearly as expanded as taiji but i lack the patience as yet, that is required to learn.

  • remember this, shifting your body before you launch your punch is very dangerous if your not use to punching... shifting your body will deal a lot more power and force straining your wrist, so its best to make sure that you do push ups on your fists and rotate your wrists this exercise may not sound right but it works.

    or you can use those boxing bandages and wrap it around your wrists, so while punching it will prevent your wrists from bending to a point where it breaks if use too much force.

  • The punch must not be to effective, he hit that guy several times and he's still standing. My punch he would have been flying across the room.

  • This is probably the best explanation on tai chi punching that I've seen. I wonder if this punch can generate even more force if it added foot pivot from boxing (maybe that's what Bruce Lee did?), and the 45 degree angle step and follow through from muay thai? The other teachers also mentioned something about sinking that looks like how a boxer lower his stance to generate more power into his strike. I think it would be amazing to watch you work the heavy bag demonstrating the different strikes.

  • Yeah if you're in the beginning or intermediate stage of your tai chi development. The more advanced you get the more internal the mechanics becomes until they disappears completely. You eventually reach a stage where all the mechanics are internal. That is why it's called an internal art.

  • Er.... no not if you want to hit somebody, it still has to be manifested externally and mechanics never become internal only energy movement. Think of the whip you can get on the end of a towel thats how your punch should be. Its an internal art because the way energy is used as opposed to an external art.

    Why not just take the comment on board and learn from it, that's how it was intended.

  • I train with Sifu Hairston and I've been practicing tai chi for over 17 years. You have a misconception about the concept of internal. All external movement originates internally. First as thought, then as impulses to the muscles then as motion. Broad at first then as you advance the gears become tighter the form and mechanics become formless. You should be able to strike with power from any position with an part of the body from any range.

  • @whoflungdat A Tai Chi technique must involve circle and focus, Tai Chi contains both circular and linear movement, there has to be both.

  • @TheZhongzheng Hi I am referring to a punch which will always have a circular movement due to the power being issued by the waist. Any movement that initiated by the waist can't be linear and should contain a spiral and you are correct Taiji does contain linear movement :-) regards.

  • I will chime in here. What ramcity is talking about is the internal power in the tai chi strikes, what he is saying is correct. If you don't believe what he says then I suggest you do the technique slowly. Tai Chi chuan works whether slow or fast. That punch he used in the video can be demonstrated at any rate of speed without losing it's effectiveness. That's what internal power does.

  • Im a boxer and the chi energy is used on the connective power u dont even need to have bigg muzzles to hit hard just use all ur body juz like the video

  • That's really interesting; I'd love to do martial arts but I've got a bad knee, so can't do kicks and twist around a lot etc. - officially jealous :-(

  • Then martial arts is definately for you if you got bad knees. You should not compete yet but training is great for bad knees esp; tai chi, qi gong... just find a great teacher and trust them and those bad knees will be a thing of the past.

  • Reply to welsh Dan 321, I teach Wing Chun, I used to have a bad knee because someone tried to run me over with a car and i dived on concrete, but after doing wing chun for couple of years i was able to rebuild strength back into my knees, also; in wing chun kung fu, you don't need to kick often, or higher than the waist

  • Is this guy a student of William CC Chen? Good stuff - although Cloud is right, it does look a little external when considering the body mechanics. Check out the stance/feet to see the leak. Maybe that's just down to the format of the demonstration. :)

  • Sifu Hairston studied under a few different masters, Master Yung-Ko-Chou, Master Lu Ping Zhang, Master Alfred Huang. but I believe his greatest influence was under Master George Ling Hu. Here's a link to his biography. You can go to the Internal Damage Tai Chi website to get his full bio.

  • Not external at all. Trust me. I've been on the recieving end of one of Sifu Hairston's "love taps" and it feels like you're being hit by a wrecking ball. It jars you to the bone! Besides there's no way to tell how internal a blow is unless you feel it.

  • Cloud, I know you're cool w/ martial knowledge and what not, but seriously man, ramcity's correct. If you look at William C.C. Chen's Yang it punches like this and one might think it's internal. The human body can only move in a limited # of ways, so in that sense, it might easily resemble and be used by external (i.e. the tiger claw part) styles. The bottom line is that this is tha buisness, son!

  • excellent body mechanics... nice to see usage of principle and ideas instead of style techniques... through this understading comes the health benifit...
