  • The few train that still have this types of doors are great, I'm 13 but I want them on all trains, u can open a window and get fresh air on the go, and open before it's stopes if ur in a rush! BRING BACK BR!!

  • cool to see what southwest trains looked like before they got upgraded to automatic doors.... ide rather take slam door trains like the other day when the train was about to leave and i missed it because the doors wouldnt open again after they closed if it was a slam door i could have got on anyway..!

  • God, as a kid I used to sit at the end of the garden and watch these trains for hours. Great Memorys.

  • amazing view, so much memories

  • Bloody hell I miss these old girls...

Nothing else drove like them - for all the faults, they would always get you home.

  • excellent film

  • Good old slammers.

Apart from the sounds mentioned earlier they had a nice sounding horn that made a pleasing pharp sound as opposed to those 'orrible loud all or nothing things that the 450s/444s have.

  • and the idiots who make dcc sound chips say 411 dont make any sound. ha ha this vid proves um wrong, the electric gen' ticking away the slamming doors the squealing brakes !! i dunno

  • I see what they are getting at i think they mean that they have no distinct sound such as that held by the networkers, desiros e.t.c. When i hear Mk 1 EMUs the main thing that i hear is their rattling!

  • Maybe no diesel sound but theres plenty to listen too

  • Yes indeed i can tell a Mk1 EMU apart from other trains by the noise it makes

  • i do miss these... great trains these where...

  • And I tell you - that's when First Class was First Class, too. The First Class corridor and compartments on those were ace.

  • I HATE the new trains. When I was a little boy I used to like flushing the toilet onto innocent people on the way into charing cross. No more of that nowadays :(

  • The danger was the thrill. Amazing trains. down to the noise the doors made slamming...

  • Maybe I'm on my own but I must say, good riddance to such outdated and dangerous rolling stock, I'll stop using trains if they are reintroduced. For people who really miss that "clunk" then there is always the Class 43 and its Mark 3 rolling stock- thank God the doors are not next to the seats on those. Just my opinion.

  • well thats a part of my childhood gone and the hst's are to withdrawn

  • how are they dangerous especialy with central door locking fittted to the lymingtion flyers

  • @xiec We have slam doors on cars (right next to the seat) and people seem to manage not to fall out!

  • i rate 10

  • Anyone else ever sit on one of those bad boys back in the day and think to themselves with a bit of determination, a screw driver and an adjustable wrench i could probably dismantle the whole carriage in a couple of hours. Then with the parts build a crane or fair ground ride mechano style!

  • loved the clanking and whistling sound of the under carriage as they rolled along the tracks and pulled into the station. I'm not even a train enthusiast but these clips make me feel very nostalgic.

  • loved these trains' please please turn back the clocks.

  • You shot at Basingstoke and didnt get beaten up by chavs? Brave man! Great video though

  • basing ins't chavs, feltham, Staines, Whitton, Byfleet are!.

  • Great video! I used to live near Eastleigh and visit regularly when I got into trains when I was 8, back in 1984! The sound of these units take me right back!

  • wow, nice vid, boy those trains were simply THE best!

  • If I'd known, in '05, that they'd be phasing out the slam-doors, and I'd had a lot of money, I'd have bought every single carriage heading for the scrap-heap, had them shipped to Australia, and perhaps done them up.

It happened over here - some bloke here in Sydney bought old trains from Melbourne, and ended up being asked to give them back when Melbourne had a shortage of trains!

  • Haha! Genius! Hope he made a few bob out of it

  • He bought them for AU$2,600 (GBP 1,205) each, and was paid $60,000 (GBP 27,815) for three of them!

  • Genius that man!

  • Ah, Excellent!

I haven't been on one of these since I left England in '98. I was only 8, and spent most of my time on class 313s or 455s, but I remember the slam-doors so fondly. I went back to England for a holiday in '04, and travelled on an SWT 455, but, damn it, I missed my last opportunity to travel on one of these. @#$&^&*!

They'll never truly replace the slam-doors. Any new train is only a downgrade. Why does everything need to be so safe these days? Travelling should be fun.

  • I left England

  • Ignore! - I hit the 'Post comment' button prematurely. Tis true, but that's not what I meant to say!

  • 05:30 - 3417.... I'd ove to say I miss driving her, but I drove her at Wimbledon nine days ago!

  • gone but never forgotten

  • All those hours you boys put in filming a pieces of railway history good vid

  • Absolutely awesome footage my friend. God how i miss those beautiful trains. RIP slammers.

  • Excelent footage there, I really do miss those slammers :(, Excelent and very reliable traction they were.
