Actually, no. It's not a bat, but it is completely legal at all levels. Karlos Dansby had a similar play for Auburn in 2001 except it was an interception on the sideline and he threw it forward before he landed out of bounds. Auburn was penalized for an illegal forward pass but it was well worth it because they also go the ball back.

The kickoff was going towards out of bounds, so he was letting it roll out of bounds so they could get it at the 40, but it bounced back towards the field of play. But he was smart enough to know that if you have one foot out of bounds and pick up the ball, it still goes to the 40. So he almost did a split, reached and grabbed the ball before it rolled too far away and it was a penalty for kicking the ball out of bounds on a kickoff.

The ref had to replay that *hit in his mind before he called a touchdown. That was the latest touchdown call I have seen in a while. And the ref motions a touchdown like... well I think it was a touchdown, what is the rule for a play like that? That was a half-#$* touchdown call on an INCREDIBLE play.
