I just want to say that you're a great drummer and I've 'liked' this video. Just want to say that before I critique one thing.

I specifically watched this video for that tom bridge right before the solo. You did not disappoint. However, I'm a little let down with the post solo drum bit. Listen to the record or watch it live, it sounds like Helders is going to pound through his kit. The same applies to your other videos. Timing is perfect, but I want some showmanship. HIT THE DRUMS HARDER! lol

If you get really confused then just break it down. Watch the bass drum, it's doing 8ths. Then watch my right hand, it's also doing 8ths on the floor tom and the crash cymbal (most of the time). Last but not least, take a look at the snare only. Then put it all together.

Tell me if that helped.

this might sound a bit stupid but ive only just hit that point where ive started to properly understand timing and notes because i have just been practising on my own without lessons and now im trying to understand drums in more detail.

A note that lasts for one eighth of a whole note is an 8th note. And a whole note is basically equal to four beats in 4/4 time.

That means that if you're counting in 8ths, you will count 8 times per measure (a measure of four beats, 4/4), or 2 times per beat.

If you're still confused then try this: Listen to this song and try to nod your head (or clap your hands or whatever) to the beat. Those are probably quarter notes. Well, if you were to divide each quarter into two, you'd get 8th notes.

Oh and one more thing, right at the beginning of the video, I'm hitting my sticks with each other before I start playing. Those are quarter notes. 8ths are twice as fast as those.
