@vidz022 That's right. But, for example, if you only have a modem (and no router) you can use this. Also, this enables you to control traffic that goes trough your computer which has ICS enabled, by using some special software. It is intended for home or eventually small office scenarios, but I guess that you will rarely see it since now we can buy cheap routers with many advanced features...
somebody pls help me share my USB 3G dongle internet connection on my PC to some other devices (mobiles, laptops...) using WiFi . I have a (Wifi+ADSL) modem i can spare for the setup.thnx
im useing a 3g dongle as a modem for my xbox and you have to run threw local area connection but it wont let me connect to the internet it worked last week can anyone help please
i connect 2 computer by using crossover cat-5e and sharing internet, A computer as server,B computer lost internet connection every time i restarted.i have to reset the setting in A computer again to connect B computer back to the internet..!!!
@aalamnaryab Hm, when ICS is enabled your LAN adapter will be set to use the IP address 192.168.0.1 by default (class C). That computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network because you are using class B IPs for other computers (different network). You could modify the IP range on ICS using Registry editor. I never tried it, but I have found an article on that topic (pm).
@houaly143 When ICS is enabled our computer acts as a router. One example of used devices would be using dial-up modem to connect to Internet and Network Interface Card (NIC) to connect to the switch. Another example is using two NIC's - one connected to DSL modem, other again connected to the switch. Another example would be using a modem/router configured in the bridge mode (built-in switch - no need for two NIC's). All other computers on our network would be connected to the switch...
@utilizewindows Windows XP can't act as a router since it does not assign hosts IP addresses. ICS is odd and should be avoided, you're better using a router which is provided with a DHCP server.
@expertmax1 Definition of a router: A network device that forwards packets from one network to another. That's it, there is nothing about assigning IP addresses. But the fact is, when you enable ICS on a computer, that computer starts NAT, DNS and DHCP services. So, in fact it is supplying IP addresses to all DHCP enabled devices. There is no reason not to use ICS in SOHO environment (small office, home office). It can be used for central firewall configuration, bandwidth control etc.
Thank you! :)

what is the differences between ICS and Router Network sharing? We all know that we can share internet as well with just using routers. right?
