if i had recorded a piece of music in audacity and had an mp3 of it, then imported that mp3 into cubase would it be able to detect the notes and turn it into midi?
@colashanacogh YESSSS then the magic genie will come out and grant you 3 wishes...its editing software not miracle/magic software...your best bet would be to export each sound as a WAV file and then you audio chopping
Hey Alan I noticed on both videos you sometimes refer to velocity in terms of how loud or soft a note is played rather than how hard a note is played. Depending on the instrument playing back the midi data the timbre more than the volume is what is impacted by the velocity.
You're quite right, and sometimes, it's just the "attack" that changes, but I haven't discussed timbre or attacks and releases yet, so I didn't want to confuse anyone.
is there an option where you can connect your instrument to the computer and play whatever and it records and shows the notes? and also send it to people? i want to teach a friend how to play something and i suck at teaching people to play something by word and hand =P
great video! but again, has anyone heard of Magix Music Maker? It kind of looks like a cheaper version of Cubase (about $40) and I was wondering if it would be worth the money...
That's a Death Cab For Cutie song, isn't it? Or Postal Service. Ben Gibbard by any means :P Very informative. I'm glad I play most instruments though, because to be honest I hate approaching music this way. It's tedious and the result is never satisfying. For drums I use a step sequencer rather than editing MIDI data. Hey, I just got an idea for my video this week! :-)
This is great, im starting a music Tech Course, my favorite is Logic Pro 8 but for the course we have to use Cubase 4 they are practically the same though, although is there any of the stuff mentioned in this video not available on cubase 4? We just started the course and really want a leg up!
do you only have the plug ins on cubase 5? i have cubase 4 but i havent encountered them before? ive also had mixed tracks set up with midi, instuments, and audio with it, but when i try to recod vocals it doesnt work!
Your vocals not working sounds like a routing problem with your mic, read through the manual that came with Cubase and make sure your ins and outs are connected properly. There will also be a chapter on the plugins. There should be some in version 4, maybe not all of them that are in 5, but some of them.
Happy to hear that, I know we have a lot of viewers that are just starting out with music, so I'm constantly afraid of going over their heads and frustrating them. I remember what it was like for me learning it all so, yeah. Yay.

That was a great lesson in MIDI Alan - I could really do with getting into it... any ideas how much a standard copy of Cubase would cost me?

Great stuff Alan.
MIDI is really cool to use I find it tricky but I may give it another go one day once I find some time.

We have a midi keyboard in our school studio.
I didn't understand it at all...I was confused when no sound came out.
Now I know what to do with it if I ever play with it again!
