  • A have a 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7 also with 125K miles and it runs fine, no lights on or sounds from the engine but where the electronic compass is uptop it dislplays a "perform service" message. I'm close to me oil change date and my oil is a tad bit low, could this be why it says this? This is my first cherokee.

  • I was looking at buying one of these as a winter car but everything I have learned about these and other american cars has really put me off buying american. Think it might have to be a BMW X5!

  • sounds like the number 7 cylinder is about to shit the bed, if it hasnt already. same thing happened to mine right after i bought it, about 4months later i had the same noise. 3 days later she was knockin like a mother. i keep seeing right around 130,000 miles all the jeep 4.7 are doin it and there all the number 7 cylinder.... i pulled the motor and took it all apart and bam....number 7 cylinder looked like a bomb went off, all my rings where smahed against the top of the piston and head

  • So what was the final diagnosis and fix? My wife ran her 2000 4.7 V8 out of oil, and it started making the exact same noise. I'm in the process of opening it up and looking around.

  • sounds like loose rocker arms.

  • bad oil pump

  • Last you need to check the camshaft for any play. And pull your intake manifold and valve covers. Check for clearances between camshaft, lifters, pushrods (is that engine a single overhead cam?) rocker arms, and valves. There is definately some damage by the noise, so only fixing the oil pressure problem will only let a fine peice of machinery destroy itself. Hope that helps - please re-post any results that you had - What did you figure out?

  • or any other damage. Still no good, check rod and main bearing clearances, the one clossest to the pump has the greatest affect on pressure, the one furthest from the pump will show the most wear. Check your crankshaft for out of round and taper before replacing new bearings

  • First the noise and low oil pressure are a hand in hand problem. The pump dosnt create pressure, only flow. resistance to that flow creates pressure. Wear can increase flow thus decreasing pressure. Start with the dip stick - is the level too low or too high? (both are bad news). Is it leaking and is you oil the wrong viscosity? Check the oil filter next, if thast dosnt help drop the pan and check the pick up screeen for debris. Still no good then remove the pump and check for oil clearances.

  • this same thing happened to me, im currently pulling and putting in brand new 4.7

  • The main prob is sludge build up in the oil pump starving the rest of the motor of oil. Hope this helps you. Good luck
