It's a coordination of bad directing, REALLY bad acting and some good special effects, which are the only good thingin the whole movie, but sure as hell not good enough to save the movie. Yes this looks dumb now. But in 1984 it was SCARY. The arms may look tacky but the slashing and dragging on the wall and ceiling had never been done before and even today that part looks good. I watched this movie in 1995 for the first time. I was 10 and is scared the shit out of me. The best scene and scariest in the entire series by far and Wes Craven said everyone tells him that is the scariest scene more so than any other scenes

It was very scary and very violent in '84 and I had to wait until I was 15 in 1995 to actually see this movie because in the 80's I was not allowed to watch scary movies (because I was a kid).
