  • sharkfin, while there are no finite rules in bonsai, there are certain cultural practices that will ensure thw healthiest plant possible. The chinese started it more than a millenium ago with pen tsai and penjing, and today these practices are backed up by mountains of scientific literature. However, you are right that the very best bonsai are created not from the modeling of other specimwns but rather from the artist own observations and experiences.

  • WTF!!! What style is this plant being trained into? Why is this guy using wire cutters to remove the extra trunk material? Concave branch cutters, buddy! If I am not mistaken, he just repotted that plant. He should let that plant root in a season or two before trying to fine tune the shape. Trying to achieve the finished image in bonsai in one growing season is like trying to paint a house on a lunch break; poor quality and no long term enjoyment.

  • this has got to be a joke, right?

  • would that technique also work well for a ficus ginseng bonsai?

  • too young for trimming lol

  • It's percisely that attitude of do what you want that is why you don't understand bonsai.

  • i think your videos are great and i would like to say that there are not actual rules for bonsai just some guide lines to help you get started and you should build of of the ones that you like to use so keep up the great work

  • HE MASSACRED THIS PLANT LOL

  • Comment removed

  • HEY I actually got a green and white ming tree.

  • Are u vin desiel?

  • What disinformation is this!

  • @kilerr182 --- you know, the internet is a wonderful thing. if you typed all that crap you just typed into a search engine, you'd have found out for yourself, rather than just waiting for other people to just hold your hand for you and guide you through life cos you can't be bothered

  • you put ur damn arm in the way every time you trim a branch. what the hell am i supposed to learn from that?

  • That tree was way to young to be pruned..

  • great video for all you retards out there you can do whatever you eant with bonsai there is no process your growing things in a tray or pot thats all true bonsai means you do what you want thats what makes it great leave all those eastern rules at home its art sculpt it the way you want.

  • you don't even know the right process of Bonsai. stop fooling the novices and those wish to learn bonsai. you are misguiding them all!!!

  • you don't know what you are doing, you don't have the patience. you should wait at least a year before you pruned that tree to encourange the trunk growth. And also you should train your new branch to the other angle way round not like this going right to the the same direction. What a crap?

  • You mangeled that poor tree

  • dude that tree wasnt ready to be pruned.....

  • a beginner who has his own knowlwdge in understanding the true art...

  • holy crap, this video sucks! the only relevant part that this guy had shown was that that nursery for bonsai that's fairly great with all those good aged bonsai...he chose the tree for the wrong styles...

  • Poor Tree

  • i have never seen anything like this ... this isnt bonsai ... if you are interested i suggest you join a local bonsai club ... they will teach you the right way to make a bonsai ,,, they will teach you the styles of bonsai and the rules ,, none of wich are being practiced in this vid ...

  • This is for those who like to make their own rules...

  • this is for those that are lazy and only interested in how fast they can get it done

  • but if u really wanted to do it why would u just wanna get it done?

  • anyone can make bonsai however they want, the only rule is that there are no rules

  • i cringed when i saw he was using a pair of wire cutter to cut that poor tree... i use those kind of cutter in my workshop wiring up a stereo....

  • Holyhandz...it's scissors not..wire cutters

  • you sound like vin diesel

  • sorry, not to be mean but scissors are not supposed to be used as bonsai trimming tools... the reason why is because they have slanted blades which can permanently damage the plant because it pinches the branch tips shut which makes it hard grow back. hope i helped

  • actually scissors have blunt blades... you want slanted blades more like a knife so it cuts cleanly and doesn't pulverize the living tissue of the tree. that could cause ireperable damage.

  • lol o well a mix up but still i had the rite idea =) just dont use any thing that will hurt the plant

  • I have a bonsai I received as a agist, however it did not come with any info on it. I was wondering how often do I water it, and do they need repotting often. I have watched some videos however , none of them have had they same leaves and stuff as mine. Do they all get the same treatment. ?? Can I pluck the leaves that look like they are dead....?

  • I have a bonsai tree that was a gift and it did not come with any info, it looks great but I was wondering when do I water it, and one or two of the leaves are looking like they are dting, can I just pluck them off? I have watched several videos on here, but I was wondering of every type of tree needs diffrent treatment.

  • thanks for the yellow backdrop, that helps

  • Hi, Any scissors that is decent will do. A nice quality scissors is worth it. I find the binsai tools I have hard to work with.

  • do u HAVE to use special bonsai trimmers or can u use regular scissors?

  • thanks very much for the tips :D

    much appreciated

  • You're welcome.

  • Hi, Glad you found it interesting. It was sure interesing being there. J.

  • hi did the little tree live? I am always weary when it comes to trimming time!

  • Hi, The tree is doing great. I expect to do a follow up video later in the summer to show the results. Trimming can be heart-wrenching, but it has just about always turned out for the better. Trimming really helps keep your tree healthy. (I posted a new viedo recently (May, 2008- showing traditional bonsai at the Morikami Museum. It's just a silent look at their trees, but it is inspiring).

  • H Jerry I saw that video it was really interesting! Thanks.

  • im also very weary when it comes to triming time

do you have any times to stop your self from going wrong ? ?

  • hi, well I live in the UK and trimming times vary, usually trimming is best in the spring to mid summer but some plants prefer autumn. I have a book I refer to but it is definitely an Art !

  • thanks very much i'll try that.

when i normaly trim my bonsai its usual when i see a part i dont like on it.. if that makes sence

  • i trimmed a tree the other month and planted the cutting and it is thriving! :)

  • nice :)

iv done that with a pine tree just gota wait until it roots now, do you know any ways of geting the cutting to root faster ? ? ?

  • I used to try a rooting hormone, but it never worked then I found out it was a anti-fungicide. Sometimes I put them in water for a week or two to see if they will grow. My best cuttings are always planted straight into some good old potting compost! Patience my friend!

  • thats ok then, i'm doing the right thing so far :)

    thanks for your help =]

  • thanxs

  • hi grate vids. Every when do you water your bonsai?

  • When hot (90F) every day. Every other day when cooler, depending on the local rains.

  • Hi, It's spelled, "sphagnum moss". I just placed an order with a company I found by googling "spagnum moss." You can order large bales there. Otherwise, local garden shops should have small hobby size bags.

  • where do i get the moss and how is it spelled.
